This is my new flat bar gravel bike, and I must admit that term is kind of ridiculous. This is really just a vintage inspired rigid mountain bike. There isn't anything revolutionary or cutting edge about this segment, but I bought one anyways and I'm really enjoying the world of gravel grinding.
So why did I buy this bike? I wanted an affordable lightweight bike for cardio rides, and challenging myself on local trails. I often ride from my house to downtown to keep my ripped physique and it wasn't very efficient on a 36 pound hardtail. Also a lot of my local trail rides don't warrant a full suspension bike or even a hardtail sometimes, so for local rides where I want to push myself...this bike will be perfect. It also reminds me of my old project bike Teal Steel...Nostalgia
I went with the Marin DSX 1 which retails for $940 and in the eyes of a mountain biker that is an absolute bargain. It's an aluminum frame paired to a carbon fork with 700 x 45mm tires and clearance for a 29 x 2.1" knobby tires. It has Tektro hydraulic disc brakes and a Shimano 1 x 11 Deore drivetrain with an 11-51 tooth cassette. Thru axles front and rear, and it even has internal routing for a dropper post. A nice hint that this bike was designed with mountain bikers in mind.
I've had this bike for about a month, and I've already started the upgrades. With the relatively low purchase price, even my cheap ass feels comfortable spending a little more to dial this thing in how I like. I removed the tan WTB Riddler tires as they weren't tubeless compatible. I was able to convert them tubeless, but after some research found that could end in disaster. So I bought these Kenda tubeless ready gravel tires. The flintridge for the front, and the alluvium out back. Do gravel bikers mix and match tires like that? I even put in some Rimpact tire inserts, but with doing trail rides on this I just consider them an insurance policy for my rims. The handlebars that came on the bike were 680mm wide, and it just felt awkward to me, so I got this pair of Ritchy bars that are 760mm wide. I added this PNW 110mm travel dropper post which was one of the longest posts I could find in a 27.2 seat tube diameter. These internal cable covers are near impossible to get back in the frame, so they remain like this. It's gross I know. The bike came with 175mm cranks on a square taper bottom bracket, but I decided to change that to a shimano hollowtech bottom bracket with 170mm GRX cranks. Kept the chainring at a 40 tooth. I did one trail ride with the 175 cranks, and had a good handful of pedal strikes. 5mm isn't much at all, but figured I'd try. The final touch to this bike is the stem which I plasti dipped to this galactic looking color. I've always wanted to plasti dip a bike, so decided to test it out on something small. Came out more grey than black, but still kind of a cool personal touch.
I love Marins "Made for fun" slogan because that's exactly what this bike is. Pure and simple fun. Mine is a size large and weighs in at 25.18 pounds which is only about 3 pounds heavier than my old road bike. Pretty impressive considering how much more capable this bike is. I haven't logged a ton of miles on this bike yet, but the rides I have done so far have been incredibly fun. Urban rides are fast and efficient while trail rides have a new sense of adventure. I love riding a local trail I've ridden thousands of times and being scared of features I would normall yawn at with my full suspension. Really keeps those skills sharp.
So far this bike has been really fun and interesting to me, and it's cool to ride a modern bike with so many similarities to the mountain bikes of the 80's. I don't plan on making a ton of content on this bike, but let me know if there is a specific video you want to see on this bike. Want to see how it handles off road? Want a more in depth review in the future? Shoot me your ideas in the comments, and I'll try to make those videos happen!

    Boiling water? When I install new rubber seals on the stanchionsand lower legs of my front suspension I put them in the freezer. Cold makes the seals smaller and thus easier to install. Can imagine it will me the same with these grommets.

    Funny thing, I was building these from used bikes 20 years ago. Take a 27" wheel size touring bike, add 700c wheels and 38-42 aspect tires with long reach tektro tourning brakes and go exploring.

    In the 1990's we called these hybrids, which were actually quite a pleasant revival of wider 700c tyres after the demise of the touring bike in the following decade. The truth is, the bike industry have tried stuffing this hole between road and mtb for years, and so far they have a track record of totally fucking whatever may have started as a good idea. Hybrids got shitty suspension forks before 29ers made them redundant. Tom Ritchey rides offroad on 33mm tyres, this whole trend of wider tyres and increasingly aggressive geometry for gravel bikes is doing a terrible job at defending themselves as "not a mountain bike". Now they're even coming equipped with suspension and dropper seat posts.

    Great video Kyle! Thank you for always keeping us informed with your helpful thoughts. Lately, I’ve been having a hard time deciding between Specialized Rockhopper Comp and Trek Marlin 7. I’m planning to ride on mild trails and commuting. And now that I’ve seen this video, deciding one from the three bikes has taken me to another level of dilemma.😂 If you had to choose from Trek Marlin 7, Specialized Rockhopper Comp and Marin DSX1 keeping in mind the components, weight and durability. Which one would you go for?

  • @CobraKyle

    @CobraKyle

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Tushar! To answer your question it depends on what your trails look like as well as your skill level. The DSX is going to be the lightest bike of those 3. I think the Rockhopper and Marlin are just over 30 pounds. While the other two come with suspension forks, they aren't necessarily the greatest forks, so if you don't mind extra vibrations transferred to your wrists/hands, then the DSX is probably a better value (components wise), and will also be quicker on pavement. If you are brand new to riding trails, then it might be safer to start with one of the other two as they will provide a little more confidence off road.

    @@CobraKyle Thank you for all your inputs. This surely helped me a lot. I’m new to mountain biking and for starters I was planning on riding in a park nearby my house that has a dedicated off-road track. But as mentioned before, I will also be using my bike for commuting and everyday use, that’s where I will have an advantage of the full carbon fork (if I am not mistaken) on the Marin compared to the suspension fork on the other two. Vibration is also one of the factor that I was keeping in mind. Ultimately, I feel that I’ll have to reprioritise my order of priorities while buying a bike.

    I am 6' tall with a 32" inseam, and the size large can feel a little cramped for me. Especially with the handlebars that came on it because they had a more prominent backsweep. Once I swapped the bars I felt a bit more comfortable. If you prefer a more stretched out riding position I'd say go with the large. If it's too long, you can always put a shorter stem on it!

    @@CobraKyle Cheers 👍 Recommended size puts me on a Large, even if I’m toward the lower end. Ride a Large size mountain bike and it’s maybe a little stretched at times. Hello! I couldn't find much information about the tires either before purchasing the bike. I did notice on Marin's website that they normally will list when their wheels/tires are tubeless compatible, and the DSX makes no mention of it. I discovered the Riddler tires weren't tubeless compatible once I received the bike. WTB tires will have a "TCS" logo stamped on the sidewall if tubeless compatible, and the ones that came on this bike don't have any markings indicating it's tubeless.

    It went together easily in less than an hour. kzread.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

    With the right tools (I used a simple bike tool kit kzread.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L that you can strap to the bike) it's simple to assemble. As a 270lb guy looking for a way to get more exercise that's easy on my feet I have been impressed by this bike. The tires ship with air in the tires, but before you ride you need to pump them up som more, but once you do you can ride with confidence. You'll definitely want to replace the seat if you're going to ride for any real distance, but that's the case with most bikes. I'm loving it and it has given me a hobby from my youth back.
