Marilyn Monroe was not a socialite. Marilyn Monroe was not filthy rich. Marilyn Monroe’s goal in life was not to be as pretty as she could. Marilyn Monroe didn’t believed that ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’. Marilyn Monroe didn’t came from a rich family. Marilyn Monroe was not just a sex symbol. She came from a broken home, she never met her father and her mother was schizophrenic. When she started her career: Worked as a model, and had to do extra hours of work in a factory. Men didn’t gave to her the opportunities that she had: She spent six long years (1947-1952) and numerous of minor movie roles to finally got her first starring role, (Marilyn’s six month contract with Columbia Pictures in 1948 was not renewed because she turned down the offer from Harry Cohn to have a weekend with him on his yacht). She did hours of dramatic lessons, singing lessons and dancing lessons everyday to feel prepared for her roles. When she finally achieved her stardom, her salary at the studio was low. She faced the studio system that was very controlling at the time - she studied method acting in the Actors Studio, builded her own production company (the third woman in history to do this) and made a career that was her pride. She was a early civil rights activist, she donated time and money to numerous charities, she was the first celebrity to talk about child sexual abuse, she had a personal library of over 400 books and was a avid reader. From a girl who came from nothing, she was a Golden Globe winner who starred in over 30 films and won numerous acting awards. She also was very critical about herself and was extremely perfectionist in her films. I can't stand all those Kim Kardashian comparisons, they look NOTHING alike. This glamorous image that you guys see today was far from being the only thing that she had. Don’t be fooled by the myths, don’t be fooled by people’s thoughts about her, don’t be fooled by the fake quotes.

+Lucy G 100% agree. I just recently finished reading her biography (Donald Spoto version) and it's amazing how you feel like you if you knew her she would have been a great friend. I've read biographies of other actresses of the time (Gardner, Turner, Bacall), and while they were indeed very interesting women, you just don't get the same sense of sympathy that you have for Marilyn. Reading about Marilyn's life, there is no sense of "they were lucky and I wish I had their life"...reading about her makes me feel genuinely compassionate towards her and sad for her. One of the facts I learned about her was that indeed she didn't even like fine jewelry. She only had two pieces, the diamond ring given to her by Joe DiMaggio, and a strand of Mikimoto pearls. She wasn't materialistic, or selfish, or greedy. She wasn't vapid either. It really makes me sad that she had such low self-esteem and some people in her life used her and made her feel so bad about herself. She was a shining star that burned out too soon.

+Lucy G Point taken. Couldn't agree more. Marilyn Monroe was never vain and narcissist. She was shy, insecure, and just wanted to prove to the world that there's more to her than meets the eye. Kim K would never be half the woman Marilyn was. :(

I would do my best to care for her in my tenderest loving care until death do us part, no matter if she was in loyal to me or not. I love you Norma Jean Baker (Aka Marilyn Monroe). May you rest in Heavenly Paradise. I'll see you when I (Godwilling) get there. Until then, it's nice to talk to you even though I can't hear your voice. At least not yet.

Everyone talks about her obvious beauty but let’s talk about how stinkin cute her mannerisms were & how impressive it was that she acted through a speech impediment (which she developed through sexual abuse at an early age) & held it together SO WELL while dealing with intense misogyny. She was super intelligent, introspective and wise. Really quite an impressive human.

+Jhanay No doubt because Marilyn had been sexually abused numerous times by then, and was also an ongoing victim of the CIA's trauma-based mind control programme, 'MK-ULTRA'. Check out Fritz Springmeier's thorough research on this and Marilyn. It's eye-opening stuff, but it also explains so much about Marilyn, her life and her death (killed by the CIA, in part), in hindsight. Sadly, this is still going on with certain celebrities today. But it’s something in her being that you can observe when she’s talks and moves. It’s something photos can’t do justice. Arthur miller had said something that made a lot of sense about her- He said something along the lines of ‘she was absolutely radiant but surrounded by darkness’ and how it bewildered & intrigued him.

That’s it. But it should be said that being in the moment doesn’t mean that she wasn’t self aware. Many people noted that if she had actually been “dumb” and less self aware and less aware of the game and how it’s played she would have been happier.

Wow, Marilyn looks like she is very uncomfortable and masking tons of pain. You can almost see her wearing that Marilyn persona because the real her is so fragile and damaged that she couldn't function otherwise. Sadness just emanates off her. Very sensitive and talented, smart woman. I think all of her complexity mixed in with her physical beauty is what is so captivating about her. Everybody wants to love her and help her and yet no one is there for her. Bad childhood will do it every time. RIP sweet lady.

She never really got to be herself, always acting, pleasing others, doing what they coaxed or told her to do, very sad, a studio product; she tried to escape and finally did. But she set the stage for other women to try to get and persona, the sex appeal she portrayed, real or not. We'll always remember her, she has that legend, no matter how it was created!

It's why she's still as talked about and important, and why there was and will never be anyone like her. I think she would be amazed to know that she's more loved, cared about and respected today than she ever was, or ever could have imagined ever being. Sadly ironic that's all she ever really wanted.

Her flash of emotion at 6:35 says it all. For a brief moment, her sadness comes through. She quickly conceals it again with a bright smile. I wonder how much time and effort went into masking that emotional pain. The comment that prompts it was that “she’s an ideal house guest...she isn’t trouble to anyone.” Undoubtedly for a moment in her mind it must have clicked - as an orphan who was in multiple foster homes, with no parents, in between in orphanages, sometimes in horrifying situations, had she ever in her life ever felt like anything much more than a houseguest? Did she ever really get to experience the love of a family? She took her torment and turned herself with dogged determination into the most glamorous star in Hollywood. The love of the public is probably the truest love she ever felt. She was truly self made and I think that’s one of the reasons she’s so admired. But all the glamour and flash in the world can’t mask or reconcile the pain inside. So sad. She is a fascinating and tragic woman.

She was kind, exceptionally intelligent, quick witted, And her innocence, despite being perceived as a sex symbol, Is so incredibly enduring. She loved deeply, Especially children, Such a strong motherly instinct is usually a sign that someone has a beautiful and soft heart. She was humble and considered everyone an equal rather than below her, despite race ( being she lived in a majorly racist era ) and social status. She maintained all these amazing qualities and love for people despite her harsh childhood of neglect and abuse, and all of the sadness she felt inside. She was the kind of person I feel anyone would want to have as their friend. Too many people don't recognize that she was a person with feelings who desired to be loved for more than her bombshell looks. I feel like no one was there for her when she needed it the most. Rest in peace Norma Jeane, You were and are loved. It is so sad when we love people more when they're gone and can't show them then we did when they were here and needed it most.

When I look at her I see someone who is hiding beneath what it means to be "Marilyn Monroe." The way she sits, messes with her hands, hesitates, looks down. She is gentle, insecure, but real. I do think that she "turned into" Marilyn Monroe when she felt she needed to. Listening to some of her last recordings, she doesn't sound as airy, and she sounds like a relaxed real woman with her guard down. Perhaps she turned it on when she knew she was on camera.

She was naive in how people perceived her and in what she had to do to achieve and keep her success. it's a rough heartless place where people will as she says "pay 5 dollars for your soul". talent is simply one quality that you need. the other more important qualities needed are a thick skin and the willingness to be used in whatever manner your masters decide.

Well I think on some levels she was innocent, I mean she got a lot of criticism and hell, backlash from those on set, the directors, producers who weren't very sympathetic or understanding about the problems she was facing and the issues she was suffering with. Marilyn was an amazing actress and yes she may of been naïve and shrewd but underneath it all she was going through a lot. I think she just wanted somebody to listen and to help her not to be constantly put down especially firing her at the end her last ever movie I think that was very unfair. Being late is one thing but lets be honest she was generally ill and I'm not talking just emotionally but physically as well.

Marilyn Monroe was a beautiful woman, but it was her faux charisma that makes us love her. It's not her 'flawless face,' which while beautiful was not what most would call perfect as well as reconstructed with surgery and makeup, and her body curved because of corset use. Her baby doll voice is bullshit - her real voice is much lower; there is nothing more telling than the dichotomy between her gentle, dumb blonde voice and the voice we hear in rare personal tapings for telling us the story of Marilyn's struggle in the industry. She simply had the 'it' factor compounded by conventional beauty. All the descriptors you used were simply the characteristics that got her far enough for the world to fall in love with her.

Milton and Amy seemed like lovely people, both to Marilyn and in general. It’s a shame seeing comments like ‘lol I bet it was so awkward for the wife’ because Milton was just a good friend and women who actually knew Marilyn loved her and were very protective of her. Stop pitting women against each other, yes, Amy wasn’t Marilyn Monroe, but she was still absolutely stunning and seems like she was a wonderful person. (Edit: Amy is actually still alive as of Feb. 11 2018! My mistake, past tense doesn’t apply to her then haha)

The hate in the comments are outrageous. Marilyn was a deeply troubled and deeply ambitious woman. To hate on her for her dependence on pills is completely uncalled for. Most celebrities then were on drugs at some point and let's not forget how little was known about mental health back then. Also to judge someone on her sexual behavior when it's all shrouded in rumor and exaggeration is pathetic. Marilyn isn't a bad role model. All she wanted was respect and love! She could have easily been a product of the studio and taken every dumb role they forced on her Or she could have simply married a wealthy man and lived well. But she didn't. She fought for herself. She took risks and worked hard on her craft. If she wasn't so crippled by her anxiety and depression she would have been easier to work with. Don't judge

Very factual - the most horrible thing about her childhood wasn't even being an orphan but constantly moved booted out of one home after another because the husbands would molest her (this happened to her even as young as 8 years old)! By her own account, a priest at her orphanage went crazy for her and bribed her to have sex with him. She said none of the nuns would do anything about it, so she eventually relented! She was around 12 when he started. Her birth father refused to even talk to her on the phone and told his wife to tell her that she will not be allowed in if she came to see him, but to call his lawyer if she has a problem!

I agree Victor. Some of these comments show envy or jealousy of the natural beauty she was. I can imagine when she was alive, the cattiness she had to endure from females around her.She never showed that ugly trait ,herself.

Victor Velasquez - She wasn't a bad role model, but she was neither a good one. E.g. had affairs with married men and was fake instead of being herself and true to herself in front of others. Look at the other confident and self-assured, strong woman next to her. Very modern and authentic. Marilyn was not unfortunately. She acts constantly, puts on a show instead of just being her genuine herself.

Loved her, never will we find another woman like Marilyn Monroe. She had a childlike beauty that was breathtaking.

Love Marilyn, such a beautiful soul. I like her shyness, which is very relevant.

She didn't die from drugs. I was watching mysteries at the monument which is a show about mysteries in the U.S. Apparently,You can tell wheither drugs killed a person or not by their corspe. They did various tests and confirmed that she didn't die from drug overdose. The show is on the history channel. I know that noone was talking about her death but I just wanted to post this.
