That was one special evening, I'll never forget at the RAH, absolutely love Marillion and a wonderful reaction to The Space, that's the way Steve always sings that song, so it was amazing that night. Hope you enjoyed too and listen to more Marillion. With 2 different singers, with totally different styles, they're both wonderful. 😎👍🍺

'The Great Escape' performed live at the Brave tour 2013 is a great track and performance by Marillion worth reacting to.

Great reaction 👍🏻 This song is from the 1st album after Fish left 'Seasons End' ('89). The highest note here was a E6. At the end of the great song 'This Strange Engine' he reach a F#6! As you get older, it gets harder to hit those high notes in live performances. But Steve Hogarth still doing great live, though he's always afraid he won't reach the high notes, especially with this song. Please check out This Strange Engine, studio version! Some great 🎸 and 🎤. It's about his father who was a sailor.

I'd recommend a live version of Power from 2013, or The Great Escape, both recorded on the same weekend

Steve Hogarth the singer is still a great singer. Still known as the new singer after 30 yrs plus. He can't quite hit the notes from songs they put out in the late eighties. Personally I travelled from New Zealand to the UK to attend their weekends in 2017 and 19. This was 2019. I like Fish era too, I think their album Clutching at Straws stands up the best. Rothery solos are amazing but when he plays alongside Hogarth I think is the best such as The Great Escape, Neverland or even a short track Go, all best seen live.

Hey Todd, Great reaction! You nailed it about Steve H, he’s very passionate. This song is from the 1989 album Seasons End and it’s the first album with him. He hits the high notes on the studio album but has struggled with them over the years. As with fine wine he has improved with time. On the previous video, I suggested that you listen to Neverland from 2009. Check out also the live version of Power, Steve H’s performance is remarkable. Cheers!

This was from 2017, a one shot recording from the RAH. It was the first song after the interval and he told their manager he thought he'd strained his voice...he hadn't , the rest of the set was fine. I saw them in Liverpool last November and he was hitting some very high notes, even the end of Afraid of Sunlight. I'm surprised bats don't answer that one 😉

Been following your Nightwish reactions as it is always fun to see reactions to Floor and the great musicianship. However my first loves are Marillion and Rush. Seen Marillion many many times live. Steve H is one of the best live performers out there. It is true that he can't quite hit the notes he used to. However the breaks in his voice have always been there. Part of his passionate delivery. I know few others who perform with the passion that he does. Steve Rothery is also one of the most underrated guitarists on the planet. Arjen called on Mark Kelly the keyboardist for a solo in the Ayreon album the Source. You have to react to Neverland from 2009. That is one of their best performances. As a lifelong prog fan that is why I have been so captivated by Nightwish as they stray often into Prog territory. But Marillion and Rush will always be at the top.

Hogarth knows exactly where and when his voice breaks traction and he uses that edge to further color his performance. His voice truly is an instrument as much as a vocal and is used as such in so many of their songs. Saw them when Hogarth first showed up in 1989 in NYC with Dream Theater opening up and i have always thought Petrucci's guitar playing started using more long, drawn out colorful bends ala Rothery post this show.

Hogarth's voice is starting to show his age a bit these days, not quite reaching the highs anymore. He used to get there with ease though, if you check some older performances. Also, for another very impassionate performance of him, check out the live version of Power from the same show as Gaza: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gYSAuZqKmNi2gqQ.html&ab_channel=earMUSIC

People seem eager to argue that Hogarth is missing some of his high end now. Maybe he is, but at the same time his overall voice has become much richer in tone and much more resonant than what you hear from him in the 1990's. He's much more enjoyable to listen to now than he was then. Age brings its limitations, but a singer should be expected to be better at his craft after 30 years of trying to do his best, just as you would expect guitarists or keyboardists to get better over time. Another singer who has improved greatly over time is Peter Nicholls of IQ.

The names are not that tricky to remember 😀 Front row Pete on bass, then guitar Steve and singer Steve, commonly referred to as H. Then Ian on drums and Mark on the keys. You'll get there...one day 😉

Steve Hogarth's performance of "Dry Land" kzread.info/dash/bejne/aoeqrqVtiMK5lLw.html live "Holidays in Zeland" is great. Rothery gives him a look at the end that says: "You Nailed That Mate!"

His voice was in great shape still then, reaching those highs with a lot more ease. And that song is really high in the chorus!

Saw these a few times and they weren’t fantastic live! I also enjoyed the fish era and fish’s solo stuff is also great, Steven Wilson produced one of his early releases if I remember correctly, think it was sunsets of empire.

Marillion!! - Subscribed!! Steve Hogarth is a great live singer, and Steve Rothery on guitar - well, no words need to be said. Sounds like you don't know them too well - you are in a large majority there unfortunately - but hey - just means you have loads more goodies to discover both with Steve H and Fish as frontman. Maybe like me you will get to love them equally. Just a small criticism - please let your requested videos play out to the end, and not cut them a little early. Apart from that - lovely to see another reactor doing the business, and will certainly check the rest of your reactions. Keep up the good work. Does your $3 Ko-Fi donation entitle you to one reaction? If so, will have plenty coming your way.

Some upbeat songs from Marillion, from both singers: Kayleigh, Whatever is Wrong With You, Market Square Heroes, Hooks in You, Assassing, Hard as Love, Paper Lies, You’re Gone, Lady Nina, Incommunicado, Half Full Jam, I Will Walk on Water.

In the other list, Kayleigh is a very poppy love song. More upbeat - although Marillion tracks are very rarely upbeat all the way through with manytempo changes - but from the Fish fronted era try -Fugazi, Incubus, The Web and for a really epic song, the love it or hate it opus of almost 20 minutes called Grendel, based on the Beowulf story, and told from the perspective of the monster. There is a fan made lyric video here on YT, which is a good way to check it out, if you want to. From the H era, Todd has already done Gaza, which alternates between upbeat and slow, but is a really strong song.

This is prog. How upbeat would you expect their music to be? Marillion fans jokingly talk about their penchant for "songs about death and water". Watching Hogarth's delivery in "The Space" you can see he loves to draw out the notes and words when he sings, adding color to them. Uptempo songs sort of clash with that style, and just as "Money" and "On the Run" are the only uptempo songs from Dark Side of the Moon, most of Marillion's output, and most of the very best of it, are slower songs. It's hard to generalize here in a few sentences. With almost 40 years' worth of albums, there have to be some rockers.
