best way to describe Fish sounds like 'strap' A Gabriel tribute act. Saw them in Blackpool in 88 - they were 1hr 15min late as Fish was pissed and they were rank. This is not the same band I saw dilly dilly! Good prog rock that sounds like... but isn't. They have their own space now :)

I’m glad you enjoyed it. The studio version of this one is from the first post-Fish album, Season’s End. My take: they were in a period of redefining themselves, and you can see different musical tendencies vying to see who they would become. From this one, Season’s End, The Space, and Easter lean toward who they would become. They were also trying to write more commercial songs as well. The commercial side dominated on the following album, Holidays in Eden. It has a number of good tracks, but it doesn’t hang together overall. For you, I’d skip that one for now. Then came Brave, which I think is right up your alley. In some ways it’s like their 2112 - I think it’s where they said, “Right. We’re doing the music that WE want to make. Sorry commercial side.” It’s very, very good, and the ending is so emotional. A full concentration, headphones in the dark kind of experience. Other ones I recommend to you from the H era are Afraid of Sunlight, Anoraknophobia (another style evolution), This Strange Engine, Marbles (do the 2 CD version), and F.E.A.R. Of those Marbles is my favorite. Finally, a thought on Misplaced Childhood, Kayleigh, and Lavender. Yes, they had hits with those songs, but they aren’t typical of the album as a whole. It’s my favorite of the Fish era, and it’s a dark and moody concept album. Give it a go if you haven’t based on the two pop songs from it. Never mind having missed out on them before! Discover them now exactly as much as you want to! 🙂

OOOOOH! Jim, I've been waiting for you to listen to this one! Gonna come back to this once I've watched it ... :) OK, back now, had a huge grin on my face the whole time. This song is a great example of why I've always said that if you look up 'crescendo' in the dictionary, you'll find a picture of Marillion. As others have no doubt already mentioned, The Space is from "Seasons' End", their first album with Steve Hogarth. His voice cracks a bit - hell, mine does too when I try to sing songs from over 30 years ago - but there's so much character and emotion in it. You've mentioned Rothery in comparison to David Gilmour before, and Rothers makes no bones about Gilmour being one of his major influences.

The lyrics also refer to the damage someone can cause in others lives and never be away of it (the section about the tram); H witness a tram hit a parked car in Amsterdam and just carry on when he was with his previous band The Europeans; and thought it was a good metaphor for what can happen in some people’s lives, so the story goes :)

This was my favourite from that album from the first minute I heard it. Shades of Floyd and Queen, with Marillion's quite distinctive melody lines. Love it!

So nice to see how much you like it! I'm really wondering what you think of their latest album F.E.A.R., would really appreciate it if you have a listen (+ video! :D) to the New Kings. Such an awesome song. There's a great live version of it as well (same concert as this one!).

If you plan to listen to some Hogarth era then i'd begin with, in no particular order :- Seasons End (his fiirst with the band) F.E.A.R. (most recent) Afraid Of Sunlight (Steve Rothery rates this as all round their strongest) Marbles (the come back after a couple of less good albums) Brave (the concept album) And also you should listen to the track 'This Strange Engine' which isn't on any of the above - constantly voted by fans as one of their best.

Surprised someone else hasn't mentioned this, so I will. I think 'chamber orchestra' is about right. It's a string quartet plus Flute and French Horn. This is a relatively recent addition. The last tour was performed entirely with the sextet, to go along with an album of old tracks dusted down with the added orchestral arrangement. The previous tour featured the sextet for half of the set, with FEAR performed just by the band - the Albert Hall video comes from that tour. Before that, they'd just used strings on a few occasions for convention weekends I think. The 'Friends from the Orchestra' album is probably a good place to start with Hogarth tracks, as it's an excellent selection of highlights from his era, and they're very nicely updated in general, though very much on the mellower side, to blend well with their tame mini-orchestra. I suspect the next tour, assuming it's after they finally manage to release a new album, will be just the band, but that's purely a guess. If you want tickets, better get in quick, I think some venues are sold out already.

The orchestral instruments really added something special to this. Who knows if there will be any concerts this year? We live and wait. Missing live music so much.

Good shit Jim. I actually enjoy the music in the H era even more than the Fish era. Of course the Fish era was amazing as well. If you like Steve's guitar, listen to his solo album.

I really loved Marillion when Fish was singer. And I loved the first albums with the new singer. I lost interest after the album Marbles. This is from the excellent album Seasons End. Hollidays in Eden. Afraid of sunlight are also excellent albums. I can’t remember how good Brave was.
