That pastor is apart of the official studio recording. He was actually Mariah's actually pastor but unfortunately he died not long after that performance. I think he was sick I'm not totally sure. Mariah gave her all with this performance. Mariah did another We Belong Together performance on BET in which she fully sustained the end note in 2005. She was capable of sustaining the end note but she cut it short for this performance because it was two part performance. Mariah went off on this album one of her best. React to songs like Mine Again, Stay The Night, Circles, and/or Joy Ride from this era she went crazy with the vocal. She was definitely still in her prime.

Fly like a bird covers 4 different octaves from start to end, thats a bigger range than 90% of artists have. In her prime wouldnt work as good as in the 2000s. Her voice was lighter and lacked the lower harmonics she later gained. Fly like a bird needs the robust sound she has at this point in her career to work, she filled more frequencies and yet she has to abandon them for the climax as she ascends the tessitura in order for having depth of sound she hands the mid and lower frequencies to the choir so she can focus in the upcoming upper chest belt, a metallic sounding whistle (tilt of ariepyglotic sphincter), falsetto, a seamlessly transition frem head to whistle.t.e and to make it even harder she sings actual phrases (words) "Higher Jesus" in whistle.
