I love Mariah. And her songs are difficult even for her. Those transitions from register to register are insane. I think that whenever she sings a song she does it thinking: " I'm going to make this song unsingable". Nobody doest it like Mariah. Simply... a genious.

you re right..... i listened very closely to what she does in her songs..and actually no one can really compare to her use of the human voice....she switches her vocal style and does many different kinds of vocal runs , head,brest and falsetto,whistle voicem fills the songs with complicated chorus and voices... she basically uses her voice as an instrument, more than just being the lead voice on songs....still remember her duet with whitney where, in the first place, you might think that whitney grand brest voice was leading the track...wrong, Mariah was all over the place, with her voice, her harmonizations and in the end,when whitney finishes the song, you can hear Mariah Angels sounding voices high up the sky...... simply Mariah is a Genius

Leu Mamk apart from those whistles, there has a lot of transitions from chest to falsetto up and down again and again with riffs it requires good breath control. Keep yourself educated up, I feel sorry for you

+SFFL 1996 I think obsessed, up out my face, and angels cry were good singles. UOMF particularly could have been a huge hit, I feel, if it had actually been promoted

LukePonds Obsessed was doomed from the start considering it's intent. I agree that Angels Cry was a good single, and could have been a hit for her had it been released as the albums big ballad, and second single. I think the entire album, and albums simce then were all promoted terribly. It's as if they just gave up after the first single.

You really can't watch a single Mariah live performance here without at least 1 comment saying she lipsynced it or some parts of it when it is clearly live. The lipsyncing thing for Mariah is getting old. Just because she has lipsynced a number of times doesn't mean she lipsyncs all the time. She's already left a legacy and I don't think she has anything more to prove. 😂 😂

Yes! My goodness it was clearly live, these folks need to clean their ears. I mean at 2:29 she even missed the "whisper" note for "hate you" and had to reroute and go into full voice. She would not have done that if she were lipping to a prerecorded track.

I agree. Why anyone would think this is lippd. Her confidence is low in this song, so endearing to me. She messes up as much as David Lttrman Butterfly 11 years earlier.... which just makes the performance so much better...

It's definitely not lipped. You could hear her and see her losing her breathe at the end of the long whistle note

The reason why we can hear her losing her breath at the end is because she messed up the line before the whistle and she wanted to start her whistle on the right beat, thus making her running out of breath because she didn't have the chance to take a full breath. And like you said, from cracked to smooth, Mariah always focuses so much on her whistle register a lot more than her other registers so her whistles always sound so much better than her chest. Regardless, still the best H.A.T.E.U performance in my opinion

The instrumental arrangements are always incredible.

Mariah was not lipping. Her facial expressions are big hints when she lips. Her face is relax and no wrinkling when she lips. Theres a part where she goes for a whistle but it didn't came up right so she has to save it (2:27 to 2:30)

That whistle is not live, if you pay attention you can hear the whistle starts before she was moving her mouth to lip it. Still love this performance.

Actually you can tell when she goes lower she cracks at @ 2:41 ( listen carefully) and then she does a falsetto to save it.

I do remember her performing Anytime You Need A Friend in 94 and she was also struggling very badly because apparently Letterman keeps the studio at 50 degrees and that's freezing. And Mariah complained about it at the time.

JKING tv lol I know. I’m just saying even the lights didn’t warm up the place because the ambient temperature is still that cold. I’ve sat in for Dr. Phil and he has an incredible amount of lights but it was still freezing I know they can turn that thermostat up five degrees lmaooo

I love how she struggled to pull it off cuz it shows that the performance was indubitably LIVE 100%!!!!!!!

Even she have struggles and epic parts, her singing still sounds very cool and she pulls it back with the last whistle.... LOVE HER SO MUCH!!

Heather Chandler fucking nodules ruined her 😭

Not her best performance, but her FIRST 100% live performance of HATEU, so I am very happy to see her singing and giving us an emotional interpretation. I prefer something imperfect but sincere/true, than something faked and partially recorded to make like it it was flawless and perfect, which it is never the case in a live version..

You can see it is a very hard song to sing, even for her. She was struggling and cracking during 2:20 - 2:30 and the note at 2:31 was lipped but the end was so soulful and pleasant, her whistles were beautiful as always
