In her book she explained that up until this concert she had no idea she was famous because of how sheltered she was by Tommy she didn’t realise the crowd outside the theatre was all for her so that’s prob why she seems nervous

You’re right about the nerves. But just for context, prior to this performance, the world hasn’t heard this song yet as it still wasn’t released during that time. This is the very first time she performed this and i can imagine that she really wanted to make it perfect and was focusing on hitting the notes rather than just being in the moment. You should watch Hero live in Tokyo Dome. She is much more relaxed there and was just having fun with the song. Greatest live performance of this song too in my opinion :)

She was 23 here. Mariah shouldn't be classified as a soprano, she says she is more of an alto and is perceptible in her speaking voice. She can't be put in the Fach system for several reason: She is not being characterized for a choir in order to know where to place her. 2. Like I said before her speaking voice is really low. 3. Her vocal agility is present and proficient enough in every register she uses starting from her low chest voice all the into her whistle. 4. Her stamina and breath control is homogeneous through her range. 5. She can out do the range both low and high of a soprano, Mezzo and even alto her live range is F2 al the way to Bb7. 6 she has a mic and uses it accordingly for texture changes, capture different harmonics and inflections. So casing her in the Fach system undermines her insane ability to use her voice. "All hail and bow to Mariah Carey, The Queen of Divas, Protector of the vocal skills from the realm, Archiduchess of Vocal range/registers, Empress of agility, The unmatched, The Mellisma mother, The Goddess of Songwriting and producing, The one often imitated, but never duplicated, The embodiment of pure success",. My simpleton ears are not worthy of your talent but a simple sung phrase will be enough to heal me for all eternity.

Yes this song was written specifically for Mariah’s voice. BY MARIAH. As were 18/19 of her number one hits. Excluding "I’ll Be There," written for the Jackson 5 by a team of writers.

Always like your reactions. Great to hear from a performeres point of view. It is very possible that she was nervous, because she does get much more nervous at things that are televised like award shows. If I'm not mistaken, this was a televised special. She is a lot more comfortable in her concerts with her fans. The live of this at Tokyo dome, I think, is one that you should look at.

This song wasn't written for Mariah, she actually wrote it with Walter Afanasieff but she wasn't fond of the song and was going to give it to Gloria Estefan to sing it for the soundtrack of a film called "Hero" but Tommy told her to keep it. And after Tommy convinced her to keep it, she changed some of the lyrics to fit her personality. Don't forget Mariah is a highly prolific songwriter and has written 18 out of her 19 #1 Hot 100 singles. The most of any female artist. And I believe Mariah was connected to the song but that's just my opinion. But great reaction, please react to Mariah reflections live at home for the holidays. ❤

Yes, she is as young here as I was young at the same time. And for me, apart from the fact that she was the sex symbol of those years, she will also always remain a symbol of a "great voice". Beautiful vocal!! ❤ I will add that, in my opinion, Mariah put the brake on her own vocal abilities here. 🤣🤣🤣

I prefer her Madison Square Garden version with that amazing choir (in 1995, if my memory serves well). The Tokyo Dome one in 1997 follows. Her voice is always agile as being nothing to her! Those upward & downward melismata are so artistry.

No disrespect of you at all but Mariah wrote this song so clearly feels it even if she doesn’t pretend to visually. This concert launched a career to where she’s now worth $350 million. There aren’t many singers that can even come close to her, I can on,y think of a few, so your standards might be a little unrealistic.

Fans trashed her early on (and thereafter), whereas Whitney's fans destroyed her more toward the middle of her career. Fan's feel they OWN singers, but fans are their most insidious evil for a career. You can never please them, so just be an artist and follow your own muse!

  • @scarletamazon3455

Don't blame the fans. Long, long before social media and fan pressure was a thing, the industry was destroying artists by forcing them to craft their art form to be profitable, same story in Hollywood. Tommy controlled Mariah, down to how she dressed! A movie exec and the music business being controlled by corporations trying to make money by what sells, and controlling artists like puppets for profit. Audiences are allowed to react the way they feel about the art produced, whether they love it or hate it, no one can expect to be universally adored at all times.
