Lyrics:
Well, I guess I'm trying to be nonchalant about it
And I'm going to extremes to prove I'm fine without you
But in reality, I'm slowly losing my mind
Underneath the guise of smile, gradually I'm dying inside
Friends ask me how I feel and I lie convincingly
'Cause I don't want to reveal the fact that I'm suffering
So I wear my disguise 'til I go home at night
Then turn down all the lights and then I breakdown and cry

One of not only her greatest songs but songs period; one of the greatest, saddest songs ever. She nailed something in this song none of her other 'sad' songs quite are smart to get save for One Sweet Day. In my top 10 Mariah songs!

+Jocosta Raynor Mariah wrote this by herself, Jermaine doesn't even have a writing credit on this song. It's only Mariah, Wish Bone, Krayzie Bone, and Stevie J. Wish and Krayzie wrote their own parts and Mariah wrote the rest. The only reason Stevie J is listed is because he probably changed a word or two so it would fit better after production. Mariah always writes her own songs (by herself most of the time) and her co writers really don't do much other than slightly edit it.

I agree and I love that she's able to adapt her voice through different music styles in different eras whether it was the 90s, 2000s and even the 2010s (Her album Caution is a perfect example of this), She's truly a timeless artist.
Mariah is the shit grow up on her 80's baby. 🦋🦋🦋🦋🌷🪻🌹💐🥰🥰🙌🏾
This incredible, timeless song is further proof of Mariah's musical genius and how underrated the legendary Bone Thugs & Harmony are. The lyrics, harmonies, vocals, riffing....everything on this song is complete perfection. Mariah's cadence is indescribably beautiful and melodic. Ugh, I can never get enough of this brilliant song and video. ❤
it's crazy, mariah had so many hits, but she should have had even more. it blows my mind that this song didn't go #1, it's an r&b masterpiece. it's right there on the level of say my name and other HUGE r&b hits of the close of the 90s and opening of the 00s. people say mariah didn't take risks but she is such a versatile talent... from classic r&b to modern r&b with hip hop influences to pop ballads to whatever, mariah's voice was able to become the defining sound of more than 2 decades. WOW. you honestly just have to sit in awe.

It didn't go to number 1 because it was limitedly released. Apparently her record label didn't agree with it being a single because they didn't like her hip-hop transition. Mariah has been quoted saying, "I'll always be upset "Breakdown" never got its shot."

I'll never forget the moment this album was stamped into my core memory. It was 2002 and I was around 8 or 9 years old. I was on a trip with my Grandmother and cousin, picking up fabric in NYC. This album was already a few years old at the time, so my mother didn't mind that I took it on the trip with me. I remember looking up at the sky and seeing the cranes still cleaning debris from 9/11. The whole time I shuffled through Breakdown, The Roof and 4th of July. It was an incredible experience. Now I'm 30 years old, living in NYC and occasionally I put my headphones on and look up at the sky, just as I did when I was a child
I love this woman bc she's extremely articulate!!!!

Break break down Steady breakin' me on down, break break down Steady breakin' me on down Break break down, steady breakin' me on down Break break down, steady breakin' me on down You called yesterday to basically say That you care for me But that you're just not in love Immediately I pretended To be feeling similarly And led you to believe it was okay To just walk away from the one thing That's unyielding and sacred to me Well I guess I'm trying to be Nonchalant about it And I'm going to extremes to prove I'm fine without you But in reality I'm slowly losing my mind Underneath a disguise of a smile Gradually I'm dying inside Friends ask me how I feel And I lie convincingly 'Cause I don't want to reveal The fact that I'm suffering So I wear my disguise 'Til I go home at night And turn down all the lights And then I break down and cry So what do you do When somebody you're so devoted to Suddenly just stops loving you And it seems they haven't got a clue Of the pain that rejection is putting you through Do you cling to your pride And sing "I will survive" Do you lash out and say how dare you leave this way? Do you hold on in vain as they just slip away Well I guess I'm trying to be Nonchalant about it And I'm going to extremes to prove I'm fine without you But in reality I'm slowly losing my mind Underneath the disguise of a smile Gradually I'm dying inside Friends ask me how I feel And I lie convincingly 'Cause I don't want to reveal The fact that I'm suffering So I wear my disguise 'Til I go home at night And turn down all the lights And then I break down and cry It'll break you down Only if you let it Everyday crazy situations rocking my mind Tryin' to break me down But I won't let it, forget it (Forget it) I be feelin' like you bringing me down Taking me around Stressin' me out I think I better go and get out And let me release some stress (Stress) Don't ever wanna feel no pain (Pain) Hoping for the sun but it looks like rain (Rain, rain, rain) Lord, I just wanna maintain Yeah, I can feel pressures y'all But nevertheless Krayzie won't fall It's over, it's ending here (Here) (3x) Well I guess I'm trying to be Nonchalant about it And I'm going to extremes to prove I'm fine without you But in reality I'm slowly losing my mind Underneath the guise of a smile Gradually I'm dying inside Friends ask me how I feel And I lie convincingly 'Cause I don't want to reveal The fact that I'm suffering So I wear my disguise 'Til I go home at night And turn down all the lights And then I break down and cry

Coming from an OG BTNH fan from the beginning, any artist who collaborated with them tended to convert to their style (to sounding a little more like theirs) for the particular track they were doing.
