I’m so intrigued by how more mature her voice used to sound when she was younger than in recent eras. Maybe she sings now with a higher larynx position? I don’t know, really, but her tone in the 90s is unparalleled

The nodules make it very hard to belt, because the voice gets naturally airy due to the vocal folds not closing well enough. A lower larynx decreases closure, and a higher one increases it. To fight against the nodules, she started to push her larynx higher to get more closure, but that worsens the nodules, so her exponencial decline is probably because of that. In the beginning, she used to drop her larynx, and use a chest predominant mix with higher breath pressure to increase the closure. Later she learned how to do better head dominant belts, with less breath pressure and a more neutral larynx (all of which increases vocal agility and eases the higher range). Merry Christmas is a perfect example of this. But then she began to overdo the larynx raising and started to create resonance imbalances (too much nasality) that per se created challenges for her later on. Comparing Rainbow with Glitter, then with Charmbracelet, is easy to hear how she lowered her larynx and rebalanced her nasal/oral resonance and how it's done wonder to her voice. Sadly she overworked during Emancipation Era and again turned to a higher larynx to sound more dramatic and fight hoarseness, what damaged her voice irreparably. After that, the vocal decline was set and each passing year it can get exponentially worse.

@@qwert2020 I think her nodules now may be too thick to remove safely. But vocal therapy should make them recess and give a better oportunity for a strategy of vocal rehabilitation. Maybe constant care and careful technique can bring her back. Would she need to lose her singing voice entirely to ask for proper help? I hope not.

What I’m getting out of this is that 90’s Mariah has a more open larynx than 2020 Mariah. Both are good versions.
