Maria Callas - Lucia - The Lost Recordings - A Journey To Opera

Музыка

Today we'll take a look at the beautiful new release of a treasured live performance of Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor, recorded in 1955 in Berlin, with Maria Callas, De Stefano and Karajan. It was recently restored for the first time from the original master tape by The Lost Recordings, a company in France that specializes in bringing top notch unreleased recordings to life.
The tape was found in an archive, and was restored and mastered by Phoenix Mastering, with the lacquers cut by Kevin Gray.
In this video I take you on my personal journey to appreciating opera, and describe how this set won my heart.
Thank you to The Lost Recordings for providing a reviewer's copy of this set to The Pressing Matters
The Lost Recordings is offering a download of "Quando rapito in estasi" in 24bit / 176.4kHz for free.

A tour de force, Scott. Nicely paced, thoughtful, insightful with some lovely reminisces. . and sharp shirt to boot! I've been looking at this for some time and as usual you've helped to push me over the edge! I think you said you in a previous video had been sent another one of the LostRecording releases . . will there be a follow-on with that at some point in the future?

Hi Steven, Thank you so much for responding to this video! Being new to talking about opera, I felt the best way was to give some background, show the release in detail and simply give my reaction. I'm glad you found it engaging. Yes I have two more to cover, the Ella in Berlin and the Michelangeli Ravel Piano Concerto. They will be coming soon. Regarding Lucia, have you ever heard this performance? It's amazing, so fresh and engaging. It can be heard here, and although it's not the Lost Recordings restoration, you can hear how good it really is: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kaGVsKykqcWnp6w.htmlsi=H-dVhlAqMY4Ewl40 If you love it, you will love the Lost Recordings set.

Thank you for bringing this series to my attention. I can always count on you to find such treasures. Callas had the most esquisite instrument. It's live, of course, so the audience brought their own noisy throat-clearing performance in spots. But I've been to my fair share of live concerts, so it doesn't bother me.

Hi Scott - I bought this when it came out but my “backlog” of new vinyl is so extensive that I haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet. The only operas that I’ve followed along with word-for-word are Carmen & La Boheme although I’ve heard many arias. I also purchased the Callas extensive CD set “La Divina” which is 131 CDs, 3 Blu-ray, & 1 DVD which includes this recording, but I haven’t had time to listen to that either. I hope to be retiring soon - I know I’ve got tons of music to listen to & books to read. Having grown up on rock, pop, R&B, Jazz, Blues, but not classical nor opera I have a lot to learn! Thanks for your reviews. David in New Canaan, CT

Yet another nice vid. I, too, find Callas endlessly fascinating. While I had some of her recital LPs it was not until 1995 that I started getting her full operas. It was serendipity when the day after seeing "Master Class" on Broadway I was on the upper West Side when I happened upon a street fair. One individual was selling a lot of opera sets, I bought all his Callas operas, about a dozen, on English EMI for $1/disc. Avoid the US Angel pressings, ugh. BTW, I like the Decca LPs way more than the ones on EMI as Decca used tube equipment until the late 60s. Now, if they'll find the Lisbon La Traviata! BTW2, is the DL 16/44, 24/96 or 24/192? The label also sells 24/192 DL versions for a reasonable price.

I think you'll find your audition of this enlightening - you may be surprised. Also, maybe check out some vocal albums - there are a few wonderful albums of art songs, sung by some of the great voices of opera. R.Strauss - Four Last Songs is beautiful, and isn't grating in the least. Also there are beautiful song recitals by Leonyne Price, Regina Crespin and others I could recommend. I was curious about the title since the 1955 Callas/Karajan/Berlin "Lucia" is hardly a "lost recording." It's been continuously available in one format or another since the 1970's. One reason for the excellent sound quality (comparable to studio recordings of the time) is that it was recorded by Berlin Radio and therefore was preserved on state-of-the-art equipment, which was not true for most of the surviving Callas broadcasts!

Very polished review, Scott. Your story reminded me of someone I worked with when I started out, straight from school. He and his wife were big opera fans and he would tell me about performances and performers etc. I was intrigued but never visited them although he did record some arias onto csssettes for me to listen to. I was into Pink Floyd, Santana, Krautrock etc at the time but I liked what I heard. It’s been many decades before I started to listen to at least some , when I bought a number of Decca opera CDs and then, as another has commented, LP boxsets for almost giveaway prices. I’d say that anyone considering opera might be better buying ‘highlights’ LPs to see if they like it, before venturing into a full recording. I agree with you that the best of the boxsets are a treat to own, as an object and some rock music issued boxsets could learn a lot about presentation from them. My most recent opera recordings I’ve bought (charity shops) have been Benjamin Britten ones and I’ve really enjoyed those.

Hi Robert, Thanks so much for your comment. It's interesting how these seemingly insignificant moments from the past do plant a seed that develops an interest later. It takes time and a bit of effort to begin to grasp this glorious art form, and I know for myself as well, the recitals and highlights were the way to go. There were times when I considered letting go of the box sets as I never listened to them much, but as I'm constantly reminded, getting rid of things you are not yet into is a big mistake. I've had a few regrets there. Now I'm so glad I hung onto these and will start exploring them more. Having made this breakthrough of sorts has inspired me to clean these up and make them part of my permanent collection.

Hi Scott, so is this a different tape than that used for the EMI CD release in the late 90s? Of course, excuse me for stating the obvious, the key to opera in an unfamiliar language is to use the libretto to follow the performance. If this set didn't come with a libretto I assume it can be found online & printed out. I remember having to do that for a few CD sets 30+ years ago. Cheers!

Hi, Yes the complete libretto with translations was in the back of the big book, so it was relatively easy to follow the drama and the words being sung. Without that I would have been lost! I am aware of the EMI CD, though have not heard it. The Lost Recordings are claiming this version is the first time from the master. Perhaps EMI used a one off copy tape? One thing is certain, the restoration and mastering by Phoenix is unique to this LP set and the associated download, CD, and reel to reel tape set.

I’d really like to see KZreadr’s be more transparent when they’ve purchased a product with their own money or received it complimentary? Can you clarify this please? Thanks Scott… great review by the way.

Thanks for your comment, Robert, and I will clarify. Review copies being sent to me is a very rare occasion. It's happened a few times, unrequested. In this case I contacted Lost Recordings to see if a review sample could be sent. There was no way I could cover this otherwise. I will update the description about the sourcing of this copy. I'm glad you enjoyed the review and hope you found it sincere and passionate. It really is a beautiful release.

@@ThePressingMatters I was sincere when I said “great review” I really do appreciate your passion and unique take on the music you cover. I also think it’s important people know when an “influencer” is being gifted a product. And the more popular (rightly so I might add) your channel becomes, the more things you’ll be sent for review. It’s only fair… I’m in the audio space and have gifted lots of my product. Thanks again for the great video… I’m likely going to order a copy now :)

@@robertkahn2417 I appreciate that Robert! I absolutely agree with you and I will be clear in the videos going forward if it was a complementary copy. I'm reminded of the video I did for RSD. Elemental sent me a batch of records and I was really struggling with that review. Finally I just was honest and diplomatic as I could be. It's not a position I like to be in. Fortunately, the other times it's happened, the releases had been stellar. The last thing I'd want to come across as would be a shill for a company. I'm already sensing that on some other channels and don't care for it. I have friends that get a lot of new releases so I can tap them if I want to review something rather than tap the manufacturer. In the case of Callas, no one I knew was getting it. Anyway the subject has been on my mind a lot lately, so just sharing some thoughts on it.

@@ThePressingMatters Very well said Scott and bravo (again) to you for recognizing the obvious ethical concerns. By the way, I’d much sooner trust a source/review who’s paid for the product than one that’s been comped, but let’s face it, that’s not how our world operates any longer. The lines are getting truly blurred. C’est la vie.
