Margaret Thatcher | Conservative Party | TV Eye | 1985

TV Eye asks, will Mrs Thatcher lead the Tories to their third election victory in a row? If she does, she’ll be the first Prime Minister to do so in modern times. On the eve of the Tory party conference Denis Tuohy talks to supporters and critics, and to Mrs Thatcher - is the mid-term malaise in the opinion polls caused by policies or presentation?

This underlines how she was never personally popular. For example, after her win in 1979, the Conservative vote dropped by 685,000 votes in 1983. The 83 - 87 parliament was a difficult one for her, with the miners' strike, Brighton bomb, and getting into serious trouble over Westland. Unemployment went up and up before the economy finally turned a corner for several years in the later 80s. As with so many leaders who serve for a long time, she was lucky in her timing. The Labour Party had collapsed after 1979 and was riven with splits and infighting. They had swung off to the extreme left and were only slowly making their way back. The SDP / Liberal Alliance couldn't break through the first past the post voting system. In the following generation, Tony Blair similarly benefitted from a fractured, rudderless and out of touch Conservative Party.

@@CashelOConnolly Yes mate born in 1960 and brought up on a council estate in Newport Wales My first vote aged 18 was for Mrs Thatcher in 1979 . She was known has the Iron Lady named by the Russians for a good reason , she was a awesome leader who worked tirelessly for Britain 18 hours a day and never fiddled this country out of a penny . She won 3 general elections voted in by the British people ,stabbed in the back by a few treacherous mp's just like they done to Boris . Take a look at a few interviews and you might change your view , she certainly ain't a witch . Enjoy your day mate .

@@mrbojangles977 Both my great aunt and uncle were made redundant in the same week under Thatcher’s watch. The NHS,schools and council housing all became run down by Thatcher. She introduced the deeply unfair poll tax. She even invited a wanted war criminal to Downing Street,Augustus Pinochet yet called Nelson Mandela a terrorist! Are you happy with your energy bills now that they’re in private hands? £4000+ next January! She privatised anything that wasn’t nailed down and within a year our gas, electricity, water and telecommunications ended up being owned by large foreign firms, yeah it sounds like she was your typical Tory leader,oh wait a minute wasn’t it her ministers that got rid of her because they knew she would be toxic at the next general election?! She was strong ,I’ll give you that but then again so was Stalin,Hitler and Mao‼️
