Oh the layers here i never noticed the first time i watched it so many years ago. I always thought Lennier turning on Sheridan in S5 was out of character and disappointing but the groundwork is laid here. Lennier does not like humans. The way he looks and talks to Marcus here (despite probably respecting or liking Marcus) seems to confirm it. His idea also that his love for Delenn is "pure and noble", borders on obsessiveness and even delusion and Marcus sees it and tries to warn him. lennier is always so loyal and friendly and kind on the surface but like all characters on B5 he has another side and this scene shows it.

Indeed there's a whole Reddit thread called "Lennier the Bigot" that uses this very scene as one of its main examples to explain how Lennier's betrayal is not as unexpected as may seem. Further, Lennier himself observed in "Points of Departure," one full season earlier, that "Minbari souls are being reborn, in part or in full, in human bodies." So for him now to sneer that "we are NOT you" comes across as flat-out defiant, in my opinion.

Not sure what he expected though by letting Sheridan die. Obviously cameras are every where. If not that exact spot and it would be odd if not, than the adjoining rooms. Although I do not think humans in B5 are as hightech as those in Star Trek, surely they would have found out what had happened. Not like Delenn would be so quick to go to anyone to begin with, much less with someone who let her husband die. But in that moment perhaps he was not thinking. But yes, this is a good look at another side of of Lennier. Although he uses these words to Marcus, I am pretty sure he would have reacted the same way had any other race, including his own, had touched him in such a fashion under the circumstances. He is torn inside for what has happened to her too.

This whole scene is one of my favorite with Marcus. His sense of humor is the sort that I thoroughly love. I can't explain why, but it sort of reminds me of the character of Murdock on the A-Team (the original TV series, not the movie) -- quick, eccentric, off beat, out of left field, erudite, unpredictable, unforgettable! (I adore both characters, which is odd since I'm usually not fond of the "crazy" types, but Murdock isn't really crazy. He's just good at pretending.)

My partner actually knew him, telling her he was playing a part in an adaption in George Eliots's novel Mill On The Floss and to watch for him on T.V when it came on. I knew of him as we both share the same surname. Its funny, we were only talking about Jason just a few weeks ago. Good old Gainsborough boy (Lincolnshire, U.K)

Another Minbari weakness, they so hard strife for perfection that have very, eery, very big problem with accepting existance of their darker side. They refuse to see it, to admit they may be wrong, until things blow up and the hell broke loose. At the end of the H-M War they were tired and sick of bloodshied, they wanted to stop, even warrior cast, but still they hide behind honour and duty. They needed reason to stop, as if the posiibility of genoside wasn't reason enough. It was not noble and pure perfect love, Lenier never truly accepted Delenn and Sherigan union, part of him was still wishing for her to leave her human 2nd part of the soul and when opportunity arrose, he /spoilers/ you know. We humans are made of contraditions, good and evil, order and chaos, love and hate, peace and passion, we know them, we recognize them, we accept them in general, it is from this diversity our strengh comes. We fall and we rise. Thats why I think that Minbari, with their all "honour and we do not lie" stuff, are not very honest.

+Ryszard Nanke the mimbari are our opposite number our older 'brother' if you will, they generally get along 'better and enjoy more harmonious lives than us but they still have our darksides. Their's articulates itself less often but far more dramatically. It's unfair to write them off as flawed because everyone in the show is flawed they have strengths we don't and they have failings we don't.

+Claire Morris Having darker side is one thing, we all do, probably every sencient being go it too. It is part of our evolutionary legacyl. Being honest to admit it is another, and this is where Mimbari got a very very very big problem. Lenier is of course not the one to blame, He is a product of Minbari society: nice, kind, living by code and reputation, curious about the universe (not exactly mimbari feature, since they tend to be isolationists), but also very represed. And this bounds can't hold them any longer, they tend to do something astronomicly stupid. They are like old tree, ancient, tall, proud, unbowed, but when it falls it is over.

I think they need their caste system. those who are more peaceful are drawn to the religious caste. Those more aggressive are drawn to the warrior caste. Those who are balanced go to the worker caste. In the end they gave five places on the grey council to the workers. Those who build the society are now leading it. I think lenier was in the wrong caste. He too had repressed aggressions. When he studied to be a ranger he took step in the right direction but he needed to have some therapy about his problems. He would have done better to never have left the temples and stayed on Mimbari. But going to B-5 awoke his repressed feelings. This show did well with the growth of the minor characters a well as the major ones. A true ensemble show.

Despite all this love and repressed frustration over Delenn Lennier did not save her from the starfire wheel. Instead, Neroon had to jump in and sacrifice himself. I never understood that. He almost had no visible emotional reaction then while literally watching her die slowly but here he freaks out over not knowing if she is ok or not.

@@rowanaforrest9792 I always like to imagine that afterward, when they break into his quarters at the Anlya-Shok training centre they discover Lennier had turned the rooms into some kind of sick shrine to Delenn: the walls covered floor to ceiling with photos of her, an altar with candles set up with a special framed portrait of her at its centre, candles lining the floors and crowded on every table and shelf, pictures of Sheridan with devil horns, black eyes and drooling fang-filled teeth drawn on them... It's a nice scene, but it kind of doesn't make sense. Marcus was trained on Minbar, he lived and trained with the Minbari. If anything, he's more used to fighting Minbari than humans, he knows just how strong Minbari are and how to fight them, he shouldn't be surprised by Lennier. If anything, Lennier should be concerned because this guy was trained to fight hand to hand combat with Minbari and knows their weak points and how to win
