It’s sad because this show was what made me realize Benedict Wong was a genuinely exemplary actor, and yet it gets cancelled and he now kinda gets relegated to just side character roles again. I NEED Benedict Wong to be in more leading roles, dammit!

​@@Bellg Yeah, I gave up on Netflix long ago, after they cancelled this and another show I enjoyed. On briefly checking their content since then, I can't say I made a mistake. They truly make boring cliché garbage.

Netflix renews 13 Reason Why, a show which should've ended after the first season, but decides to cancel Marco Polo which is by far the best Netflix series out there. And it remains my personal favorite until this day 6 years later. The only other Netflix Original that comes close to this series is Kingdom. If they cancel that, I cancel my subscription.

@@marwanitoh on netflix there is no such people statistics and revenues you pay your subscription monthly regardless what tv show u watching! One point was right the costs of production were to high! Accurate historical shows much more expansive then CGI shows...

Thijs Goedegebuure all is not lost. They are saying it's neither cancelled or renewed and speculated to being scripted for season 3. I'm baffled how this struggled initially, the scenes, props, acting, costumes make me feel like i'm genuinely in the past.

1:24 my favorite how the painting turned into the Mongol Hordes

One of the underrated things about this song is the blending of traditional Chinese instrumentation and Mongol throat singing. I like to think this is how the composers represented the Mongol rule over China, initially Mongol but rapidly Sinicizing.

This theme still hits after playing Ghost of Tsushima.

Dude everytime this Intro rolled, it literally gave such a special vibe. Every. Single. Time...

One of the best shows ever! So much potential!

This show had its problems (a lot of them. Some REALLY big ones) but I am continuously blown away by how insanely hard this title sequence goes, especially with the knowledge of how much of it was done practically. I never skipped it, and it never failed to get me really excited for an episode.

@@zoomzoombabe of course! In general, the show leaned much more towards alternate history than historical fiction, with some REALLY big leaps taken to make things more dramatic for the show. We'll never know for certain since all our historical knowledge is based on whatever records survived from the time, but the Mongolian takeover of Xiangyang likely didn't end with Marco Polo and his Kung Fu master defeating the leader of the city in a fast-paced martial arts battle. It makes for good television, but doesn't really have much of a connection to the real events. In a similar vein, Kublai Khan never killed his brother, which was another great dramatic moment in season one. The two actually resolved the civil war with his brother surrendering, although again, that would not have been as exciting as the sword duel to the death. My other big issue with the show is how it (intentionally or unintentionally) REALLY goes hard on the "white savior" trope that can be a bit hard to watch. Marco shows up and quickly masters kung fu better than anyone except his own teacher and comes up with battle strategies smarter than those of Mongol generals. This really shows in how Kokachin gets shoved right into the "demure pretty Asian woman who falls in love with the first white guy she sees" box and stays there for the whole first season. (Until season 2, where she falls into the "pregnant woman who doesn't get to do anything except be pregnant" box instead). So yeah, brief summary of some stuff I wish the show had done better. However, this show, at least for me, did a great job of doing what ALL historical fiction should do in my opinion: be entertaining enough and engaging enough to make me look more into the subject matter. And I did! The real-life story of Kublai Khan is such an interesting one, and there's a lot of cool stuff that went down that I would have loved to see explored in additional seasons. (Kublai made it as far south as Vietnam and even tried to invade Japan via naval assault). Unfortunately all sources point to the show being cancelled indefinitely, which is definitely a big shame in my opinion. Would have loved to see this time period and setting further explored.

Season 2 was beyond amazing and great, the Christian conflict was awesome and the complexity of trust and loyalty manifesting in the characters was fantastic. You must be drunk to think any of that was “tRaSh” and wouldn’t know quality if it hit you in the face.

Well it does. The Mongol empire which was the largest continual land empire cannot have that adage given the the British empire. The sun never set on the British empire in a literal sense, it did in a metaphorical one.

I don't know why but I'm in love with Chinese music. Just the Stories told in Hong Kong are just magical. I find them extremely powerful and they always stick into my head. I always like the stories told near that time

Loved the promise of this show, but it never did justice to one of the if not the greatest explorer of all time.

This series was better than any Steven Spielberg's movies. Way better! I'm still satisfied with the ending of season 2 and have watched it many times. All actors were spectacular and believable. I was immersed in it. What a great work! My favorites were of course: The Monk 100 eyes, and Yusuf.
