Did you ever hear about Marco's search for Shangri La? They found this blue resin that turned his crew into giant blue monsters and ate each other in a Borneo jungle after running from a tsunami. Then later the ancestor of Sir Francis Drake named Nathan Drake picked up on his journey and had to race a crazy guy named lazaravic and his mercenary army to the Himalayas to find it before lazaravic eats the resin and takes over the world or something. Nate ended up killing him by blowing up the flammable blue resin and saved the world. All of this is 100% true.

"The Travels of Marco Polo" is still in print today. It's a wonderful book. It kind of reads like a "Business traveller's guide to the Orient", with detailed information on trade goods available in every single city he visited. There are also plenty of adventures and side stories included. Marco Polo himself, several times in the book, disavows the most outlandish of stories (dog-headed people etc), as he felt he wouldn't be taken seriously if he included these.

Marco Polo is greatly OVERRATED. Seriously, compare his travels to that of his contemporary, Ibn Battutah. Ibn Battutah traveled about twice as many miles and visited almost ten times as many different countries. Seriously, if you are interested in "ancient" travelers, investigate Ibn Battutah.

Polo didn't just get arrested in Genoa during the war, get put in jail with Rustichell da Pisa, and out of boredom, the book was written. Polo was the commander of one of the ships for the Vinetian fleet during the battle of curzola. During that battle, pretty much the whole vinetian fleet was captured including Marco Polo. The pows were then transported to a prison island and while there Polo told the stories of his travels to peoples and then from talk, more and more people came to hear Polo's stories. Rustichello who was also a prisoner in the island was one of the people who caught word of polos stories and wanted to write of them.

The sound of music in the desert is pretty amazing. The first time I saw a video with it I thought it was a hoax, but I guess the sound is created when an avalanche of sand creates vibrations that become trapped in between the upper, dry layer of sand and the wet sand beneath, with the depth of that dry layer determining the note. What's really freaky is that the sound can travel across the desert and linger for hours after the avalanche has stopped. If I had lived back then I would totally have believed in desert spirits as well. In some ways I wonder if our technological prowess has robbed the world of some of its magic. Marco probably told that story of spirits singing songs in the desert a thousand times in his life; how many kids went to bed dreaming of magical deserts haunted by the spirits of phantom warriors or something?

I am under the impression that Simon is very anti Christianity. Although I really enjoy his videos I noticed a slight of hand in many of them. He always tends to throw in something negative about conservatism or Christianity. In one of his videos he talks about a serial killer growing up in a conservative household, but it turns out the mother hated men, so it would be nice to know what he means by conservative. She sounds like a screeching feminist if you ask me.

Just because someone is documenting something of what’s actually happen doesn’t make you an anti Christian just because it doesn’t fit your narrative of being a peaceful religion.

Suggestion: could you please add citations/ references on the screen as you recite the script? A decent portion of your audience appear to be well versed in history and sometimes have differing accounts. There are various reasons why historical testimonies may differ. By providing these citations as you go along, it helps discern the validity of yours and other peoples statements.

That's not an accurate portrayal of Columbus. Other governors of new Spain did most of the enslaving. There's an English translation of his work that says "these people are perfect for subjugation" but he didn't mean enslavement, he meant "becoming subjects of the Spanish crown". He was no saint, but he wasn't the idiotic monster he's portrayed as.
