Hi, Simon. For Kubilai's conquest of Java, I don't think mysterious disease was the main reason of his failure. The main reason was he didn't understand Java's political dynamic. At that time when he sent his first ambassador there, Java was led by Kertanegara from Singhasari. This king was the one who cut the ambassador's ears. When Kubilai was furious and decided to send army there, Kertanegara was already killed by Jayakatwang. Obviously, it led to a huge confussion in Kubilai's army, since...well, the Java king was no more and there was a whole new situation. This situation was used by Raden Vijaya, Kertanegara's son-in-law, to ask help from Kubilai's army and promise that he would be a submissive to the Mongol. Thus, his and Kubilai's army attack Jayakatwang. When the coast was cleared, Raden Vijaya attacked Kubilai's army and forced them to retreat. They finally decided to return to China.

The International historians underrate the Prince of Hưng Đạo. However, we ourselves often overlook the great leadership of the two Emperors. While the Prince of Hưng Đạo was assigned command of the army, the two emperors were far more than figureheads. They organized the councils of Bình Than and Diên Hồng, they came to frontline to inspire and motivate soldiers at critical moment, they shared hardship with the army during the retreat, and they personally commanded an army in the final offensives. The battle in which Sogetu was killed was not commanded by the Prince of Hưng Đạo but by the two Emperors themselves. Also it was the two Emperors who gave important instructions to generals such as Trần Nhật Duật and Trần Khánh Dư during key battles such as Hàm Tử and Vân Đồn. Without the decisive victory at Vân Đồn, which was made possible by the Higher Emperor's firm dealing with Trần Khánh Dư, Bạch Đằng would be impossible.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the amazing song “Xanadu” by the band Rush, from the ‘70s. It’s still my favorite song of theirs, and borrows lyrics from S.T. Coleridge’s classic poem, which I coincidentally, just read two evenings ago🙂. Edit: I have to correct something that I wrote- I reread my comment and realized that it could be misconstrued- I meant to say that the song was from the 70s- not that the band was from the 70s. They are (were)- but also released excellent albums in the 80s, 90s, and on into the 2000s. They’re incredible, and sadly lost their genius lyricist and the best percussionist in modern music, Neil Peart, earlier this year. Anyway- just felt obligated to point that out- I have a ton of respect for these incredible artists (uh, if you couldn’t tell 😆). I’m happy that others were thinking of them too. Stay safe and healthy, everyone-

Once again great nourishment for the brain. The task of conquering, sustaining and then expansion along with good offense, defense, plus delegation. It's hard enough ruling over one's own thoughts. The ambition for some to desire and acquire it on that extreme is amazingly beyond my scope of comprehension. However thank you for awesome narration of another interesting time. Keep the blue poppin and stay safe. 🤗💯💙
