🐔Chicken Tip: Something we learned about our chickens was that the mamas teach their babies to eat, including the scraps. So when we had chicks that mama hatched, the babies ate the scraps from just a couple of weeks old. But when we brought chicks home from the feed store, they only seemed to know how to eat the chicken scratch. They need to be taught to eat the scraps. So you put your thumb and fingers together, so it kind of looks like a beak and then peck at the scraps in front of the chickens as if your hand is a chicken head & beak eating the scraps and they will learn how to eat the scraps too.

Years and years ago when I was first married, there was the Tightwad Gazette...anyone remember her? She was a big advocate of pantry stocking. You buy food at the best prices to restock your pantry and you plan meals out of your pantry. I have not managed to get that organized. 😄 Anyway, that's what your new methods remind me of!

I've gradually been stretching out the amount of times I shop per month & at the beginning of the year started using the pick up service of my local supermarket which has helped coz it means I don't physically have to go into the store where I would often impulse buy 😉 I've also reduced the amount of items I buy for stock up of pantry. Every $ saved helps 😊

You and I are in different life stages with money, amount of kids, etc BUT one thing we both do and why I love watching you is the constant switch up of trying to save and budget. I am doing couponing at multiple stores and dollar general for household supplies, changing up products, etc. just do to me having only 2 smalls that I can take to stores and have more coupon/budget time but I appreciate everybody views on how to save and I think it’s great to watch others and get different ideas. Then, with the birth of our 2nd child, we found ourselves very unorganized and we’re going by the store twice a week. We are going to try our very, very best to make it the whole month. We just got back from Sam’s. As you said, I’ll be glad if we can just manage to get back in budget. Thank you for the inspiration and advice!

In these times of such high food prices we have to think more about how we shop. I keep a check on our regular items at different stores and when there is a good offer I buy a huge amount. It really helps to stay well stocked. I recently bought a trolley full of chicken grills which were £150 a pack of two, instead of £2.75, I often get some strange looks at the checkout but don't care as long as I'm getting 'the best bang for my buck'.

In the summer we raised a garden and our budget really went down. Now that our children are grown, our grocery budget is really low because of our garden and I process every thing. Hi what I normally do is stock up on items when on special. The shops have different specials throughout the month and then I buy in bulk. So I hardly buy at standard price. I then put in place a top up quantity and look out for the next special price as not all special comes up on every month. For fruit and vegetables I will also buy in bulk sometime it is to much but before it goes off I will chop and freeze. It cost less then prepackaged food. Veg like carrots and cucumbers and be chopped and placed in water and put in the fridge. It will keep crisp for up to a week. Thanks for sharing your budget and what you are doing to stay on track.

    1. Your children are getting older, so they probably will be eating more. 2. Even the official inflation rate has food up a good bit from last year, and never mind about pre-covid prices. 3. You are making more and more food from scratch and have the equipment to do it. Ergo YOU ARE DOING GREAT! I have a completely different way of shopping than you do (stopping by stores while on other errands and buying almost everything only by sales), but if this is working so that you are even remotely staying in budget, then you are achieving a lot. The important thing in my estimation is that each of us needs to develop a strategy and carry it out.

I am trying to use some of my shelf stable food that I stocked in case the pandemic made getting food difficult. I am making soups and stews in quantities that are several servings (only 1 in my household) then I freeze all but a couple of servings to have later. Then I make a large chili are casserole and do the same thing with it. I try to make 4-5 things with multiple frozen servings then I don’t get food boredom.

Since your will be building a house on the farm it might be good to get a proper big size celler. It doesnt matter if you grow stuff or buy stuff. When i was little my parents bought 400 punds/200 kilos of potatoes in autumn to last the 3 of us until next autumn. Kept pretty okay but now they get small er amounts

Ethnic and Asian grocer stores are a great place to fruits and veggies at a lot cheaper price, even things like rice and herbs and spices as well. You are also generally putting your money into your local economy compared to the big stores like Wal-Mart, Aldi, target, Costco etc.

Happy Belly brand from Amazon has many grocery items on sale. If you spend more than $50 you get 20% off. Many items end up being a lot less than Walmart, Sam's or Aldi.

This month I'm doing a no spend month (last month we went over budget 😔) We are cooking out of our pantry and getting by with what we have. I think next month we'll switch to doing once a week shopping for the sales instead of once a month.

I started drinking kombucha to heal my gut and it’s helping. I’ve been gluten intolerant for a few years now. Seems to help me be able to eat it w/o getting acid reflux. I started my first batch of kombucha at home let’s see how this goes!!! Looks good so far.

Sarah, I admire you greatly! You feed your family healthful foods, don't buy alot of junk food, concentrate on your budget while trying to save for a trip to Kenya for your family.. I love that you find time to bake your own bread, make yougurt, granola, have a veggie garden, etc. Both you and your husband spend quality time with your children. It's alot to juggle; seems you've found the right balance. Not easy with 11 children. Your kids are happy, well adjusted. If only there were more parents like you! God Bless.

For those of us on limited incomes March almost has five weeks in it so hard to stick to a monthly designated amount.

Experience from Ireland: When you go once a month / once every 2 months, you lose out on the expiring products at the supermarkets. You can save a huge amount by simply buying products with BBE in the same month - and as many of us know, Best Before dates are just a suggestion. In Ireland you can find onions and potatoes for 10% price with BBE of today…both are good for weeks if not months after the official expiry date, good way to stock up on those items. The same system is applicable in the UK.. We live close to a Tesco, so it is easy to catch these finds.

I did the once a month food store shopping for February and no spending extra money other then bills. Worked out pretty good. So I’m doing it again for March unfortunately I found two trees down laying across my driveway from a bad storm last night. Both jeeps or people did not get hurt so that’s a blessing… these things happen. I’m excited about this month I just have to keep the trees standing lol welcome to the Poconos lol you are a true inspiration thank you 😊

I am in KY. We had a bad storm go thru with very bad winds and our neighbors 15 foot Pine Tree Uprooted and is now laying in my side yard. It smashed the fence and destroyed my other neighbors shed too. Luckily it miss our home and no one was injured. Had it hit the house it would have landed on me as I was asleep in the bedroom next to where the tree fell. We do have a huge mess to clean up today

I now have a year's plus worth of pictured receipts in a note program, and have found it super enlightening to help me track prices. My husband is a huge soda pop drinker, and those prices have really increased. I've started keeping track of how much money that has been costing us.

Oops, I accidentally sent my comment before I was finished regarding a homesteading channel named Homesteading with the Zimmermans. They are a Northern Ia former Mennonite family. She is an excellent teacher in demonstrating cheese making, mozzarella, ricotta, cottage cheese, etc, pasta, gardening and much more. So much to learn from her videos. Also love Papa's channel.
