You are correct, it can also play DSD/DSF files. I do my best to include everything or every detail but honestly, so many of these products include everything AND the kitchen sink, my reviews would be an hour to cover everything. Folks complain enough about the length of my videos enough as it is ;).

After now hearing your review, it sound like it has pretty much everything I am after but in practise, it sounds pretty compromised :( do you know of any other leading brand that offers similar?

I use a separate amplifier for my subs So what I’m looking for is the cleanest amplifier under $1000 around 100 watts a channel. With Bluetooth of course. I also looked at denon dra800h but if this nr1200 is a cleaner unit I’ll buy this one Unless you have another receiver in mind?

Hmm. I think there might still be some confusion? Zone 2 is a pre-amp output that can be used to play something different from whatever is playing in Zone 1. The physical A & B speaker outs on the other hand are both Zone 1. So yes bi-wire and not bi-amp but not in the way described. I bi-wire from a single set of outputs. Comes to the same and is less fiddly to manage.

This is the video and product that has sent me into an audiophile rabbit hole-(approximately $5000+ in so far) the past year. AR has been essential in my hifi journey with his slick video production, knowledgeable and entertaining videos and products that are fascinating to learn about regardless if I can afford them or not. I use the NR1200 has a preamp with two Jamo S808 subs, Klipsch RP600M, two Crown XLS1002, bridged giving me a stupid amount of power along with my video sources: Apple TV, Roku, FiOS, 46 inch Phillips TV which has provided me with a phenomenal entry level starter system that I have been enjoying literally ever since I saw this video. So kudos to Andrew and his success and please keep up the fantastic work!

The Marantz NR1200 has been my amp for a year. It's been fantastic in connections and sound, at least for me. Actually thought it was 100w per channel until watching this video. And Andrew is spot-on when he described the 'dark' sound. I've compensated by turning the high up 1db (or whatever the UOM is).

Excellent video Andrew! I have an NR1200 for three weeks now. It should be noted I am used to the "Denon" sound - including a test system with 1-AVR-3700H which I had connected to a 2-Emotiva Amp A3 then 3-Definitive Technology 9060 speakers. With this 1-2-3 combination I really enjoyed the sound, depth, clarity and presence of all types of music and movies. For a new room I am building, I was looking for a 2-channel Pre-Amp and the NR1200 checked all the boxes on paper. So I switched the Denon AVR-X3700H in this trio with the 1-Marantz NR1200 connected to the 2-Emotiva Amp and 3-BP9060 speakers in the distance and angles in open air to match the original setup...The sound after changing the Denon with NR1200 Amp, the sound was clearly transformed from a medley of beautiful sound into "oily, heavy buttery" sound. In my opinion, this NR1200 is a great entry-level Marantz-sounding Amp. When I say Marantz-sounding it appears as though there is a specific "flavor" to the sound that is really up to the listener. IMO it's not for me. My first impressions were that most of the liveliness of the sound (i.e. feels like around 1K and several areas in the higher frequencies are missing. For example the high-frequencies of the hi-hat on drums, certain vocal ranges and fine higher-frequencies are simply missing from the source). I know the speakers produce so much more range and depth of sound but even with the amp boosting the power at low volumes, I have a hard time listening to music I am familiar with without accepting there is so much sound removed from the source. The NR1200 can produce allot of volume but it is just loud and muddy. Even pushing the volume up doesn't present the sounds that are missing at lower volumes (and yes I played with the D-MAX settings, base and treble (STEREO mode), switching to PURE and PURE DIRECT also had those same mid-high frequencies missing (Dance, Techno, Rock, Smooth Jazz, R&B and meditation music). This NR1200 does sound pretty sweet to symphony music though... My testing of sound with the NR1200 was using Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay2 and Google Chromecast (via HDMI source "Media Player" position 4) . I listened to a variety of musing streaming using Spotify, Amazon Music and Pandora from an iPhone 12 and Samsung S10e. The sound using the Chromecast was much clearer with way superior buffering - even from the iPhone 12! But even with the Chromecast bringing clearer source sound, the NR1200 has been tuned to have that smooth, buttery sound kind of ruining the experience for my ears. Maybe with smaller speakers it would be more balanced but for my BP9060 speakers it sounds too rich, flat and buttery-base. I am returning the NR1200 to Best Buy simply because I want more features and get that Denon "sound" I have learned to love. I will be upgrading the AVR-3700H with the AVR-X4700H (Best Buy sold out so buying from Denon direct), and replacing the NR1200 with the AVR-3700H for my new room. I will be so fun! Great video - very concise. It's not easy to describe sound coming from different components. This video helped me so much thank you!!

The first 3 minutes of this video really explains what has become "Home Theater". Being a home theater company owner, I can tell you the type of systems I install are 80 percent stereo or soundbar configurations. My business had drastically died off compared to the mid 2000s. Everyone is keeping things simple and cleaner for most homes that have open concepts design. I've installed 0 Atmos setups the past year. Unfortunately, smaller setups don't pay the bills. 😣

How are you changing your business's focus? I would think smart home integration and multi-zone audio with a slant towards supporting "lifestyle" audio could fill gaps. Sonos is so easy, but shocked how friends still need help with theirs, heh. And yeah, Atmos is still hype for all bit a narrow slice of content mixed properly. Our 5.1 with Atmos virtualization in the living room does fine emulating the extra channels and the sound bar in the bedroom (Beam) is all we need. Home theater has got to be tough if you are not in a market where home builders are pushing theater rooms.

D'oh! Seems great! I was looking for this exact product about a year ago, and it didn't exist (lower quality alternatives may have)...and I have a far less elegant solution, and though I'm not ready to sell my stuff and buy this, it's ideal for what I was wanting to do. Getting a new turntable triggered the search. I was going to use an integrated and an HDMI switcher with an optical audio output, but it wouldn't have reduced the number of boxes or the complexity.... Wanted quality 2-channel, plus video switching. I envy those who get this!

Thanks for putting your review out there. I've been considering purchasing this item since August or so. Kept waiting for reviews to show up. Seems like in just the past two weeks, the reviews have started coming in, most are favorable. I have an older SR5009 in the living room and am connected up, but still prefer to listen mostly to music in 2 channel. Would be purchasing this for setup in a separate listening area. Not quite ready to pull the trigger yet on this, but soon. Thanks again

I have been running the NR1200 for about 6 months now and am super happy with it. Up until a week ago I was temporarily using it to power two Power Sound Audio MTM210 speakers and a huge dual 18" Power Sound Audio Sub which had been borrowed from my home theatre for a while. It sounded great. However I moved those speakers back to the theatre when my brand new Bowers & Wilkins 603 S2 anniversary editions arrived this week and I couldn't be happier honestly. Even though the B&W's are a full 10dB less efficient, the 75watts per channel from the NR1200 still seems to be more than enough to drive them with plenty of grunt. The NR1200 has done exactly what it was designed for - a living room hybrid music and TV/Movies controller. Music in our living room is via an AppleTV, with the TV running. We didn't want to overload the living room with subs and 5+ speakers. We wanted a room that looked beautiful and sounded great, while allowing the family to utilise the TV for shows, movies and gaming. The NR1200 controls it all with aplomb. Highly recommended. PS - as for the 'coloured' sound Andrew speaks of. It's certainly got that 'Marantz' smoothness to it, in a similar way to how my Marantz 8805 process does in the theatre. But I wouldn't say it's over pronounced. I believe this is the tonal character people refer to when they say 'Marantz is better for music than Yamaha' - there's just a slight smoothness, airiness and weight to the sound that every so gently removes any potential harshness that could lead to fatigue. I'm not sure whether Marantz actively use DSP to notch certain frequencies, or whether it's purely a side-affect of the components they use - either way it sounds nice to the ear.

Hi Andrew :) Thank you so much for your very high quality reviews - I really enjoy watching them and they have been very helpful. I need a little help here with a few amps that you reviewed - Marantz NR1200, Rotel A11 Tribute and AudioLab A6000. I would like to ask you - in terms of sheer audio quality, which one would you choose? I myself have a very old Rotel ra-01 amp and I love it's lively, spacious, dynamic, detailed and enjoyable sound. I bought a pair of Elac DFR 52 Reference speakers and I am searching for a relatively budget or mid range (price wise) amplifier that would give me the best neutral and detailed, but still lively and exciting sound for the money. Out of those three (or if you have experience with the Rotel A12 or A14), which one would you prefer to listen to? Thank you very much for your help in advance! Best wishes, Petar

Watching streaming videos with the sound coming through the system I have not been able to solve this. There is an audio delay control - to add further lag. But not to take it away.

I’m considering this unit or the Marantz NR1510 in my system, which is currently powered by a Denon AVR-888, which is about 10 years old. I only do 3.1 (no surround speakers) but could easily live with stereo plus the sub. I recently bought the new Apple TV 4K and I cannot the sound from apps processed through the receiver. I’ve tried several configurations, and I simply may not have hit the right combination. But I think just swapping the receiver for the Marantz 1200 might save time, frustration and space, plus be a sonic upgrade. My only concern is whether eARC, which the NR1200 does not have but the 1510 does have would be helpful or even required with a 4K UHD TV.

Airplay sounds spectacular. Overall, very nice. The sub out low pass filter is sufficient to get smooth bass integration.

But I do have a Parasound P7 pre-amp/A21 combo for stereo. And the majority of the time, I'm only using the Parasound gear for TV sound or movies...the stereo system images so well, the surround not playing is never a negative thing.

Just bought one based a lot on Andrew's review. I couldn't be more pleased. Easy to configure and set up. Worked like it should from the get go. And it sounds great through my Klipsch RP-500 speakers. After figuring out how to do the video pass-through on a Samsung TV, I did a "test" by watching Saving Private Ryan (DVD) and was impressed with the overall dynamics and presence. Will likely get a subwoofer down the road to 'enhance those low frequencies and make them more pronounced than can be reasonably expected from the RP-500s. But that's a personal thing and doesn't degrade from the overall sound spectrum put out by the NR-1200. And playing music via CDs, I sometimes will up the treble by a dB or two to make the cymbals and vocals shine a little more. But again, that's a personal thing ... your mileage may differ. All in all, very pleased with the NR-1200. As for the initial 'click-pop' Andrew mentioned when turning on the unit, it doesn't sound any worse than my 1970s Pioneer SX-737 and I'm not bothered by it. Whatever. Cheers!

Question. Because the NR1200 has 4K HDMI connections (with having to ‘reduce’ surround to 2 channel), does this receiver has to have licensing in order to have these? I was told that the full blown home theater receivers have to have licensing to use the surround modes and visual modes, connections, etc.

Regarding the discussion of the NR1200's richer darker signature and system matching. I kept looking over Andrew's shoulder at the JBL L100's and their 12" woofers. On speakers with 5" - 6" woofers more typical of 2019 almost 2020 my guess is that sonic signature will be less of an issue and actually a plus.

Thats a good detailed review , I bought the Marantz NR 1409 awhile back simply because it was basic cheap and i can turn off as many channels as i want and its not loaded with wifi/bt streamer the more audio you have in one box the more that gets robbed from one power supply and this adds rf inteference causing lower quality sound but for a budgef AVR that you can get for 100.00 bucks US its hard to beat and matches well with Sonys SSCS3 towers warm meets cool basically thanks again

This review has been of help in knowing what I don't want to spend that much money on despite the input/output support. I never considered myself a 2-channel enthusiast until hearing you say it but I'm definitely in line with that and you're right, the NR1200 checks all the boxes for my next home theater upgrade. I have some floor Cerwin Vegas that I've loved and will not replace and I do like the physical tone controls on the front whereas the 4023 didn't. That was an 80 watt per channel unit and only losing 5 watts per channel I don't think I'm going to miss much since it's already too loud as it is for my needs, tiny home theater.

I Don't need 5.1 or above, for me it's just waste of money and space to fill the room with speakers. I just want great sounding left and right speakers which produce good enough pfantom center and a sub which handles LFE track. That will give enough home theater experience for the price for my taste.

Just in the process of looking for a receiver and was so happy to see this review. I am having difficult time to decide between the Marantz NR1200 and the Denon DRA-800H. I am more on the Marantz side for now as it has all the functions that I need and the size is a factor here too. For the speakers i have decided to go for the Q Acoustics 3020i also based on the Andrew's reviews on YT. What got me thinking is that Andrew mentioned in this video that Marantz is on the darker side and could be too much if the speakers are at the same side. I have read somewhere that the 3020i could be slightly on the darker side too. Not sure now if I should go with the Marantz or Denon if it comes to paring with the Q Acoustics 3020i. I have no chance to test this in the shop anywhere so was hoping that someone heard the setup and can help me to decide.

I own this receiver. It is combined with self made speakers (mivoc units, including mivoc magnetostatic tweeter) . It is very fine sounding, never agressive, good imaging, has all features I want, combines well with my 4k tv screen. I do have a second set with more reveiling electronics but these are way more expensive. For movies and tv the marantz is great. My guess is that a somewhat 'darker' sound is compensated by the small speakers There is relais clicking when turning off and on but nothing wrong with that.

I have had the full 5.1 speaker with the S35 center and S10 Bookshelf's as well. Had them connected in 5.1 for a while then switched over to the DRA800 h and 2.1 and I actually prefer it like this. The Towers look way cleaner without the center and I don't miss it. Voices and clear and powerful with only the S60e Polk towers and the SVS PB 1000 delivers more than enough room shaking bass in any movie. Its a simple yet very effective setup with way less speakers but I would not say less of an event if watching movies.
