I totally disagree with you about Petain. He was neither a traitor or a Nazi sympathizer but a true French patriot who did not abandon his country like De Gaulle. Petain refused to have France enter WW2 on the behalf of Nazi Germany when he met with Hitler in 1940. France lost WW2 due to the decadent Third Republic with its vile liberal and Marxist policies. Petain was right in his war against secularism. His trail and imprisonment was disgraceful, France could use a man like Petain today.

1.Although the French law of secularization was passed in 1905, it took time for the " rot " to set into France, By 1940, the decadence has set in to such degree that the French had lost the will to fight, and this malaise was not evident during WW1 as France did win, but this was due to American support, otherwise, the war would have been a stalemate. The Polish, French, and British armies were defeated by the Nazis due to superior tactics. continued......

    2. However, the French has more men and material than the Nazis, and in some aspects, the had a technological advantage over the Germans in some of their equipment, whereas, the Polish were both outnumbered and had antiquated equipment as compared to the Nazis. So, the French, with such a magnificent army, lost to Hitler in 5 weeks, this was utterly shocking. Therefore, Petain's argument that the rot caused by the decadence of the 'Third Republic' accelerated this great debacle for France.

Well, I will not condone anti-semitism because people who are prejudiced are usually not educated and ignorant. However, I can attest to the fact that some people dislike Jews and there has always been varying degrees of anti-semitism in Europe, anti-semitism is common here in my country too. So, Petain's anti-semitism was probably ingrained in him at an early age, and with Hitler ruling Europe, it was much easier to enact these type of laws directed against Jews.

  • @villanovakid84

I am not familiar with these anti-Semetic laws that Petain initiated in France. Yes, De Gaulle was anti-Nazi but he ran off to England while Petain remained behind and tried to correct all the maladies of the Third Republic. In this sense, he was totally right because liberalism and secularism led to the French defeat to the Nazis.Vichy France was given a high degree of autonomy by Hitler due to the great respect Petain had with the French people. Laval was an opportunist and a Fascist, yes.

Yes, Petain did lose a high degree of his power after the Allies landed in North Africa in 1942 and Pierre Laval started to player a larger role in Vichy France. I know that Dr. Goebbels kept lobbying Hitler to get rid of Petain as evidenced by diatribes against Petain in his diary. Hitler wanted Petain to declare war against the British, but he refused to commit France to such an undertaking. And both Britain and the US gave full diplomatic recognition to the Vichy government.

It is absurd to compare the French Third Republic to the USSR. Yes, the USSR was an " atheist " state, but it was under the rule of an authoritarian leader in Joseph Stalin, a great man and a great leader. Stalin was not shackled by parliamentary bickering like the Third Republic or any other democracy. He was a man who tolerated no dissent and got things done, a ruthless dictator, just like Hitler. There was no room for " rot" under Stalin, if so, you would be shipped to a Siberian gulag.

The Italians had horrible leadership among their officers, this was well documented by Rommel and other German generals. I think the Italians contributed greatly to the defeat of Hitler, they surrendered in droves to the British in North Africa even with superior numbers. They sucked big time.

All the allies were smashed by the Germans in 1940 because they were not ready for Blitzkreig. France included. Your absurd notion that secularlism "rots" a country and makes it unable to defend itself is ridiculous. In point of fact, 80% of the effort in defeating Nazi Germany was supplied by the USSR, which was an atheist state. This discussion is too stupid to continue. If you want to continue to repeat Pétain's stupid ideas go ahead. I have wasted enough time on you.
