this sounds a lot like the Nordic old music I'm listening too. Amazing, gives you old-spirit feels you didnt know you have. I love seeing people still living such old traditions, languages, and dances/fight preparations.

A haka wasnt always for fight preparations, they were used in greetings of other tribes, so Tribe A visits Tribe B they would have a welcoming cerimony of sorts and a haka was used to say a lot of things but also said 'We are strong, do not mess with us' along with its other actual word message and meaning. Im no expert on it but this is what i was atleast taught.

I have this thing… when I listen to choirs singing in harmony and counterpoint… I can’t help it. It makes me cry. I feel such a powerful adrenaline rush in my chest. I try to hold it for a while, but then I have to let it go and cry like a baby. Otherwise, my heart just explodes. For some reason, the Haka makes me feel the same way.

I'm from the U.S. and I remember doing the Ka Mate as a kid and other songs from NZed during a program in my city that arranged performances of songs from other countries of the world. NZed was the featured country the one year I contributed. When I grew up, I married a kiwi and ended up moving there. I always thought that was a surreal foreshadowing in my life.

As a European child immigrant to Australia back in the 70's. I was picked for a local netball team. I don't know why since I was short & scrawny. But anyway. We were facing off with a Maori team. And the girls on that team started doing the Haka - I have never been so facking scared in my entire farcking life! As I ran off the court. Everyone lost their shit & raucous laughter burst forth from everyone on the court, to the players to the audience - if done right. This shite really works in terrifying your opponents into full flight. I'm living testament. Since then of course, I've made many Maori friends. They have the best sense of humour on the planet. Hearts of gold. Brilliant mates. Loyal to the last breath. But they're bat-shite crazy & I would never challenge any of them - they're farcking terrifying & I know my limitations.

Alucinante y poderoso.

Lana M In Maori culture it's a way of showing respect, the haka is used also at weddings, gatherings, welcoming officials, etc. The Maori philosophy as I understand it is the haka should be intimidating and fearful, as it shows they are taking you seriously and see you as an intimidating and fearful adversary in a very warrior like culture. This is typically followed by the most intimate and warmest of welcomes (the Maori Hongi) in which case they touch their nose to yours, invite you to eat food with them and you'll see a complete flipside when they accept you and truly treat you like part of their family, it's a very humbling experience. As for your "people are not idiots" comment, well you are if you pass judgement without knowing all the facts. Completely your right to do so, as it is anyone's right to be stupid if they so choose.

Yes. The test of a side facing the Haka is not how they DISrespect it, but how they respect it. A side that stands quietly, with dignity, while facing the Haka is one that has confidence, and the right to be on the field. One that tries to play silly posturing games............ Gah!!
