@@bryanferratt6598 Possibly to do with father figures being seen as stern and authoritarian. It’s a tradition dating back to the original stage play. On the famous 1960 NBC musical, they were played by Cyril Ritchard.
Hans Conried was basically the Charlie Adler of his era. He had the same kind of range and the same ability to go from stern and serious to wild and crazy and bouncing off the walls.
His role as Dr. Terwilliker in _The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T._ was very memorable, and animated, in it's own right.
He was a terrific voice actor from the old days, and he was taken from us too soon. It's remarkable that despite his failing health, he continued to provide voice work in projects until his dying days. A true testament to his talent.

@@vinceniederman it’s a shame that since he was replaced by Taylor Holmes for the voice role for Stefan, we will never ever know the truth or solve the unsolved question of the voice actor for the herald (being Lord Duke) for any certainty. Taylor Holmes was not a great King Stefan but he was okay. The test audiences should have filed a complaint to Disney that Holmes sounded way too old and unsuitable to voice Stefan. Conried would have been perfect and much better as Stefan so that he would have been a fun and emotional character. That was my biggest flaw and Disney’s greatest mistake for Sleeping Beauty
My favorite voice by him was Capt Hook; even though he isn't my favorite villain. I still love it when Hook is saying "Row for the ship, row for the " then hits his head on the opening on the cave.

Amusingly, Dr. Dred (from the Drak Pack, at 2:25) was physically based on Vincent Price while being voiced by Hans Conried, so he's kinda both. :D
He was absolutely perfect as Captain Hook and is easily one of my favorite versions of The Grinch.
I never knew that he voiced Snidely Whiplash from Dudley Do-Right.
RIP Hans Conried (1917 1982)
It took me too many years to realize Captain Hook & the Dad in the beginning are voiced by the same guy
If you ask me, Hans was a much better Horton than Jim Carrey, who was just plain annoying. Hans was much closer to the way Seuss intended, and it's such a great break from the usual villains and professors he normally voiced.
Rest In Peace Hans Conried You Did Good Job Voice Captain Hook From Disney Peter Pan 1953
HOORAY for HANS! Hans Conried had a great voice and a great presence. Han's is missed!
Never knew he was also Thorin Oakenshield as well! What a great voice.
I can't say as I had a favorite Hans Conried character. In fact, most of the characters shown in this video, I never realized that he had done until I saw them here. I remember Hans Conried from live-action shows, although I remember him most for a show not even shown here, "George of the Jungle". He was the narrator.
Here’s an interesting connection with Hans Conried and Dr. Seuss. • Conried starred in the 1953 movie, “The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T”. Animated TV specials • (2:42) Horton Hears a Who!/1970 • (4:35) Dr. Seuss on the Loose/1973 • (0:22) Halloween is Grinch Night/1977

Wow! I had no idea how much Hans did that I would have watched as a kid! Thanks for posting!
Is it just me or were the best cartoons were back in the 40's through the 80's? Some 90's. I'm an '87 baby and still love the much older cartoons compared to today's.
Kinda interesting how one of his last roles, The Faerie King and his Shadow in Faeries, is a dual role in the same vein as George Darling and Captain Hook in Peter Pan.

Mr. Conried appeared in dozens of episodes of Suspense (the Classic Radio series) plus many of Escape radio.

Mr. Conried was in a rerun of the classic "Suspense" episode "Sorry, Wrong Number." This story was broadcast seven times between 1943 and 1960 (they didn't play recordings of the old shows, the way they do nowadays with reruns of old TV shows), and always with different actors, except for Agnes Moorehead, who played the imperiled Mrs Stevenson. On one rebroadcast (from somewhere between 1943 and '45), Conried was the voice of George, the hoodlum hired to kill Mrs. Stevenson. I know that because I used have a multi C.D. set of "The 60 Greatest Radio Episodes" (or at least, words to that effect; I don't quite recall the exact wording). It had a booklet that described each program, listing the names of the shows' directors, producers, writers, etc, and of course, the actors.

Another Old Time Radio series Hans Conried was in was "My Friend Irma", starring Marie Wilson as the world's dumbest blonde. (But I don't think he was in the TV series, though it's hard to tell because the TV series is so rare.)
Hans Conried is such an amazing actor! Captain Hook is definitely the best of his characters!
Conried had a long history of heart problems and suffered a stroke in 1974 and a mild heart attack in 1979.
Crazy to see how much of a range he had. I’ve only ever seen him as Captain Hook so that’s how I see him. Also when I was a kid I thought he was from England for some reason
Easily Captain Hook who is also my favourite Disney Villain.
"SMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!"
For starters, I was waiting for Cpt.Hook to show up. Also, I believe theirs a classic Disney cartoon where a court case is held about traffic and theirs a lawyer that sounds like Hans Conried.
Would’ve been nice to see Hans Conried in other animated Disney films like Bill Thompson had done. He even turned down the role of King Stefan believe it or not.

If it weren’t for Taylor Holmes, then Conried would have become a Disney Legend if he voiced King Stefan (if Holmes turned down that role of one of the minor characters). He would have gotten him a more distinct and developed personality and strong voice of depth. Him being replaced by Holmes is the worst mistake of Sleeping Beauty that left us with unanswered questions.
I love how some of the characters look like him

That enunciation. Brilliant
Outstanding, thanks for putting that together!
RIP Hans Conried (1917-1982)
The guy whom I believe shall be a Disney Legend, if he made it as King Stefan, had it not been for Taylor Holmes, who is the key to unanswered questions. But I think Conried’s own replacement by Holmes probably prevented that idea from taking place, despite working for Disney shorts and specials, not to mention it only did more to create unanswered questions about the herald’s voice and name for example.
10-13-2022. The many voices of Hans! I hear very little change.
even when he says "spiderman" he sounds like Captain Hook and yes I know because their the same voice actor but it's the one character you most know them for portraying that you can't help but only here that character.
Thorin Oakenshield (the dwarf) in "The Hobbit" was my favorite performance of his. but i also like what he did in "Horton Hears A Who"
Magic Mirror on the wall, Couple characters of "The Phantom Tollbooth", the evil taxidermy cat from "Woody Woodpecker Show", & Horton the 🐘 is my favorite type voice from Hans Conried, if you asked me truly personally.

How did his performance as Thomas Jefferson in Ben and Me not make the cut?
From having just watched the hobbit (1977), it’s hard to listen to him when he portrayed Thorin and not think that he’s a miniature Captain Hook/Mr. Darling.
Cartoon characters don't have the unique personalities they used to have since the passing, and passing over, of classic radio-trained voice actors like the great Hans Conreid in favor of better-known film stars. And Conreid made just as strong an impression in front of the camera.
I loved Hans Conried was the voice of Captain Hook.
You know when Hans Conried voice his two Dr. Seuss' characters as The Grinch & Horton it's just like Jim Carrey when he play his Dr. Seuss' characters too The Grinch from How The Grinch Stole Christmas! & Horton from Horton Hears A Who!
I never knew that Horton the Elephant has the same voice actor as Captain Hook!
