The Prague tram (streetcar) system is the largest tram system in the Czech Republic, consisting of 140 kilometres of track, over 900 tram cars, and 33 lines with a total route length of 540 km. It is operated by Dopravní podnik hlavního města Prahy a.s., a company owned by the City of Prague. The system served 356 million passengers in 2008. The first horsecar tram line was opened in 1875, the first electric tram ran in 1891.

NetSurfer1111: It is not a question of money at the first place. Prague's ratio is ~1.9 persons per car which means quite a lot of cars. It just does not make much sense to use a car in the centre unless you need it for work. Public transport works quite well. In most cases using a public transport is a faster way to get around - especially due to traffic jams and lack of parking places in Prague's narrow streets.

Quando sono stato a PRAGA lo scorso agosto i tram sono state le prime cose che ho filmato, unici, uno diverso dall'altro.

"Look at how full the average tram is" Yes, it is like this because most people there ride trams, buses, and subways/metros. Having a private automobile there is not economically viable because of relatively low incomes vs. western countries and the high cost of fuel. Although incomes in Czech Republic are rising the cost of fuel is still very expensive. Although some people still do have private cars, Czechs have adopted the cheap fare tram to be their major transportation.

It's not just about economy. Prague historical centre is not designed for massive car traffic.

That is not true. I am from and live in Czech Republic. Almost everyone has a private car, but in the center of Prague, you can't drive everywhere...

@@flankerpraha Mainly because when the city was founded 900 years ago, they didn't even know there would be cars. 😁😁😁
