Many Felt He Was NUTS for ERASING the Bass From Final Track-Became #1 Song of 1984-Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

In 1983 into 1984 every artist and band on the planet was massively outdone by one massive blockbuster. The Biggest selling album of all time. Michael Jackson’s Thriller…. The Police, Pink Floyd, Hall and Oates, Styx Foreigner, YES, David Bowie… All had to be second bananas and then some of the biggest albums of that times never got to #1 because of it. I’m talking Van Halen 1984, Def Leppard Pyromania, and Duran Duran Rio to name a few. That’s when a rising superstar named Prince Rogers Nelson who was part Jimi Hendrix, part Little Richard stepped to up the mic and unleashed a batch of songs that would one up Michael Jackson… He would dominate the charts with 24 weeks at #1 with Purple Rain but he’d also do something even Jackson couldn’t do.. Dominate movie theaters. He took a risk with a first time director and a song that had no bass called When Doves Cry… The story is next on professor of rock

Dig if you will the picture…of a young prodigy born 'Prince Rogers Nelson’. Known by his stage name.. Prince- the lad developed extraordinary skills to become one of the true geniuses of the Rock Era.Prince's innate mastery for artistic innovation defied classification, and broke the confines of race, gender, & musical genre conventionalism.
In 1984, the unparalleled Prince virtuosity was under the gun, when the artist was tasked with composing a track that would be used during a pivotal sequence in the movie Purple Rain. So let me set this us up. It’s early 1984. Prince was coming of his brilliant album 1999 which gave him hist first big hits. it was a celebrated album of 1983, making most all of the year end best album lists. He was critically adored, but not as well know by the masses. Michael Jackson was in the midst of global domination with what would become the biggest selling album in this world’s history with Thriller.
Prince was ready for his closeup and though the press played up the Michael Jackson Prince rivalry the truth is overtaking Jackson wasn’t Prince’s biggest priority, Prince wanted to overtake everybody. Prince against the world and he was primed for his next movie. That said, how could anybody overtake MJ? He’s just won a record 8 Grammys? 7 top ten hits from one album? MTV domination? It was a tall order. Enter the movie Purple Rain.
Purple Rain was crafted to be a quasi autobiographical pic that was loosely based on Prince’s real life. In Prince’s mind, the film was to be his version of The Beatles movie A Hard Day’s Night. A sort of embellished version of his own life’s story, although, it is a mystery as to what scenes in the movie were based on actual events. Many of his band member including keyboardist Matt Fink have said that Prince would talk about the conflict prince and his real life life father had when Prince was young, more on that in a moment.

Back in the 90’s I worked as a contract sound engineer for couple of clubs in the Minneapolis area, including First Ave. and Prince’s club called Glam slam. On one occasion at a club we were setting for a show and heard that Prince was coming for a visit. Weird thing was we were told to not look at Prince or talk to him… well, I was a rebel. When he came in and and when everyone else kept their head down, I simply said… “Hey, what’s up?” Prince came over to me and I was actually afraid… until he simply looked at me and said… “not much man… just enjoying the day!” He then said thank you for the hard work, and went on his way. My one and only Prince story. Just because I didn’t listen to orders.

I think it was all a genius marketing plan. He created an illusion of who he was and surrounded himself with it. It was exactly the illusion that made everyone run to see Purple Rain three, four, five times. No one was let in so it was worth more when he offered a peek. My Prince story is I was at Glam Slam during the NBA all star weekend. I saw Shaq perform with the Frusnickins😂 Just recently I read an article where Shaq described the night as transformative in his thoughts regarding fame. I just remember loving how Prince created a air around him that brought everyone together. Beautiful women with open personalities and everyone was there to have a great time. This was every time I was at the Glam Slam. I remember the debut of Diamonds and Pearls there. The best memories of my life as related to music.

Well, he practiced a bit on his own because when he tried to rehearse with the others, there were some audio issues and a case of the first guitar soloist wanting to continue with his solos a bit too much. They also had forgotten how good Prince was on guitar - like many others, including Rolling Stone magazine which had released it's Top 100 Guitarists Of All Time list without Prince on it. They later tried to say that his name was on the list but had mistakenly been cut during the arranging process. Anyway, Prince obviously stole the show but in a RESPECTFUL way, which I think eventually got through to Dhani and the others, who could appreciate it as a master paying homage to a deceased master.

One actually had to have writing, singing and playing talent to be successful. There is some music today that is good but there is a lot today that lacks any depth or creativity or much talent by the artist. When Purple Rain came out, I was living in Japan and I can tell you, it took Japan by storm. His music was everywhere and rightly so. I had the pleasure of seeing Prince live at the Budokan in Japan in 2003. 5th row. And what anyone will tell you that has watched him live is that, apart from his amazing music and talent, Prince just exuded raw energy. He OWNED the stage the night I saw him and it helped that he had an amazing band with him, including the legendary Maceo Parker! One other personal note related to Prince and Purple Rain. I was blessed enough to see the final concert of Chic, in Japan in 1986, the night before Bernard Edwards died in his sleep at his hotel. You know who was one of the 2 female vocalists for that show? Jill Jones!!

The third time was the best.... Usana Amphitheater in Utah. Sept 7th 2004. I was third row from the stage. Treat Williams was sitting on my right and Ernie Hudson was sitting to the left of my date. He did a 37 song set. Including When Doves Cry and Whole Lotta Love by Led Zepplin. Fantastic show. I admit that I shed some tears at the news of his passing.😢 rest in peace.

Prince's musical genius is unparalleled, not just as a lyricist, but as an instrumentalist and performer. Using drum beats in place of a bass in this song gives the listener a feel of both wing and heart beats, which evokes the exact emotion he was going for, and more importantly, the one the listener needed. As much as I love Prince, I'm embarrassed to admit I never saw this movie. I guess I need to finally watch it. Thanks so much for another great episode, Adam. Have an excellent day.

That's pretty amazing. I also never even noticed there was no bass line in the song. That's new news to me. I knew Prince's music long before even 1999. I was introduced to Prince with his albums Dirty Minds and Controversy. So when I heard he was making a movie, I couldn't wait to go see it. I was not at all disappointed. I went out and bought the album(cassette) shortly after the movie. Both are simply amazing. I've always loved Prince's music.

But that doesn't mean he didn't still make great music. He absolutely made great music continuously. Personally, I don't think Prince's music will ever die. I'm really hoping that, at some point in time, before I leave this earth, somebody will do something with the ten years of music that was found in his vault after his passing. I think the whole world would love to hear what Prince had in store for us. Of course, it would have to be done by the right artists. No clue who those people would be. But I think it would be awesome if somebody started recording fresh new tracks from Prince.

I was fortunate I was able to see the movie on the big screen sitting front and center. He was the greatest ever!!! I loved him so much. Definitely takes me back to my high school days and when music was great!! Also the BEST Half-Time Performance of all times!!

In 1984, I was living with a roommate and she and I were huge Prince fans. We decorated our apartment in Purple and Prince posters. "When Doves Cry" was my favorite song and whenever it came on in the dance clubs or on the radio, I was up on my feet and dancing! I will forever love Prince and his music. He truly was one of the greats.

I remember seeing him in Los Angeles, no one had heard of him prior, so we got excited of the inside talk. He came on stage {he was tiny} in Heels, Lingerie, got booed, until he played his guitar, and the room went silent. He was amazing then regardless of what he wore as he was throughout his career ~ Miss him ~ ///=^} ~

When Doves Cry doesn't sounds like anyone or anything else. Prince was such a wonderful musician and artist. It's so horribly sad that he died as an early victim of fentanyl. Opioids have taken so much from us.

Many years ago, my girlfriend (now wife) bought us tickets to a Prince concert. At the time, I didn't want to go and I asked that she take one of her girlfriends, but she insisted that she got the tickets for us and she wanted me to go with her, so I went with ho-hum attitude. The last half of the concert was just Prince and an acoustic guitar, and it was the greatest live performance I have ever witnessed. He was a master, I don't know how else to put it. I'm so grateful she drug me along. During the last song he invited a ton of fans from out of the crowd up on stage to dance with him while he played. I'll never forget it, and what I wouldn't give to go to another of his concerts...

I never noticed there was no bass until after he passed. I listened to each one of his songs for over a year after and sonically absorbed every nuance. It's like my ears were opened in a different way. It's simply amazing. I liked Prince for the first few records and I found him when I was 7. I loved him for 1999. Purple Rain left a fingerprint on my heart that is smudged forever. I followed him and the B sides diligently thereafter. I miss this man in ways beyond words.

I went to see Purple Rain the night it premiered. I left the movie theatre blown away - unlike any other movie since! I had been listening to 1999 continuously - but, Purple Rain became the soundtrack to my life after seeing the movie over and over again in the theatre. (every Friday night for weeks) When Doves Cry (and the whole album) spoke to me and is one of my favorite Prince songs. I've been a life-long Prince fan and only wish that he was not taken from us too early - before he could continue to grace us with his songs and performances.
