@@seanmurphy26That's the downside to growing. There's only so much someone can respond to. Plus there are a lot of repeat questions that he is usually happy to answer but they can take up a lot of "space" so to speak. The chat gets faster and faster every year - practically impossible to follow it at times. Early riser questions at least have time to marinate and assess whether it's a good for the show that given week.

Re., splitting humbuckers. Another option is the SD Triple Shot pickup rings. I did this on an LP with two push/pulls and with the TS rings you can switch each pickup as series or parallel OR coil split either the slug or screw coil. Then the two push/pulls were wired for when both pickups were selected as either series/parallel or in/out of phase. AFAIK both rings are under $50. The plastic is hair softer than typical rings and come in flat or arched topped and are super simple to install.

I've stopped into a local Guitar Center about 4 - 5 times a year and noticed they have an inordinate amount of guitars new guitars with scratches and gouges hanging on the walls. Many of them have fret spout problems. I can randomly pick out 6 or more guitars and all of them will have something wrong with them. They don't have anybody changing the strings, doing setups or just tuning them. They use to have a repair tech that took care of that, but he left because they didn't want to pay him for doing all the extra work besides his tech position duties. Now he has his own business doing repairs and setups. The good thing about this situation is he lives only 2 blocks from me so if I need any work done on any of my guitars he well walking distance. I don't have to drive a half hour though traffic to GC.

Anything over $1000 is almost always hung high out of reach and is usually locked to persuade the timid customer from having to ask to try, which I can understand because of all the issues you mentioned. That fender finding NOS paint analogy happened in the cycling world, an Italian frame maker found an old box of lugs from the 70s, enough to make 100 frames, they re-popped a 70s "screwed and glued" frame with polished lugs and painted tubing and those frames sold for ridiculous amounts of money, kinda like if you own an 80s GT bmx bike, that's the equivalent of owning an actual gibson burst.

Hey Phil, Fender has started using UV coatings for (some/all) guitars made in Corona. I don’t know exactly what guitars or parts of guitars they are using these coatings for (I can find out), but they appear to be in the process of ultimately changing over all of their lines (at least in Corona) to UV. Also, Fender initially moved away from nitro in Southern California in the late 80’s, early 90s due to air quality regulations. You may have heard… our smog was really bad then! (It’s better now, but still not great). When I was on the Variance Hearing Board back then, I remember Fender coming in to ask for a limited temporary variance from the regulations as they tried to develop coatings that would meet air quality requirements. Separately… I love Knaggs guitars, and first saw/heard them when I saw Dougie Rappaport playing one with Edgar Winter. The sound was incredible. I got to briefly play one at the next NAMM. I generally prefer the looks of their wood grain ones, but I thought your choices in modifying the looks were really good. And yes, it very much reminds of my old classmate’s ‘57 Chevy! Nice job!

it took me three tries to get a somewhat playable les paul from guitar center and I still had to send it to Gibson for repairs under warranty within a month of having it. Two side notes: When I had to return the second Les Paul the person I spoke to on the phone told me I had to pay to ship it back to them (this was a few days after I received it damaged). When I told him it was damaged and that I had already alerted my customer service rep that it was damaged and he said okay then you don't have to pay for shipping. So, if you buy something from them and just want to return it because you don't like it or have buyer's remorse you have to pay to ship it back. Gibson also tried to charge me shipping to ship it to them under warranty. I had to argue to get them to cover it.

The single pickup preference can also be compared to the preference for the single volume and tone on a guitar with multiple pickups. That is MY choice whenever possible. Dual volume and tone are useful for recording/fine tuning the output/tone, but for playing live (especially if ur the singer) the simpler the better in the knob & switch dept.

Thanks Phil, you're videos are always reality. The thing about Guitar Center tho is they have floor models, with a small stock of guitars in boxes of their non used models with normal run rates. If you play one of their instruments, and request a boxed one, they will give it to you. if they don't have it on hand, then they will simply order it for your home delivery. Sweetwater is the same with their demo units. Small music stores, or business for that matter are always important....but if you read about Guitar Center (Musicians Friend), Sweetwater, AMS, they all started as small shops. it's the typical business model if you do things right, the cream rises to the top and franchises are created, where as those who like to poo poo and remain small are just making excuses.

Regarding the Endura frets, in the 1980s, when IBM came out with the PC, they sold it with a newly designed keyboard. The position of the control button caused me to rotate my left hand about 15 degrees counter-clockwise so I could press the control button with my little finger. Before long, the IBM design was the industry standard, and a million clones of the keyboard were laid out in the new, non-standard IBM way. My hand hurt for years. It resulted in all the fingers of my left hand having to strain as they reached left unnaturally. Here we are years later, and it has been forty years of pain in my left hand, carpal tunnel, and trigger release (twice each ). Phillip, you are justified in fearing opening yourself to a non-standard fret geometry. Something you depend on every day of your life is that you can switch between different guitars, and the mechanics of string manipulation remain about the same.

A lot of guitars at Guitar Center suck because so many people mess with them. People will drop them, smack them into each other, mess up the tension by tuning too high or low, scratch the finish with their belt buckles or other worn items, pop off knobs to steal them, etc. You get all this stuff happening to the guitars and the employees don't do anything about it because they don't even know it happened. Guitar center guitars get all the abuse but none of the needed care or maintenance.

The Mexican Standards of the referenced era had standard ceramic single coils, not the Alnico Deluxe Drives. Get the Highway One. 😊

I LOOOOVE guitars with a single humbucker in the bridge! It's like a dedicated rock machine that does one thing, but extremely well. It also just looks badass, and I like the simple controls. My Kramer SM-1 H has 1 push/pull knob. That's it! It's not like I get confused with two or three knobs; but I like simplicity. I also prefer a 3-way toggle to a 5-way blade switch. It looks better.

Got my Martin 000-15M New through Sweetwater and had them install the Fishman Presys and give me very low action setup. It was amazing! Gave them top marks. Then bought a $500 Ukulele that had finish problems and terrible strings (unraveling within 3 weeks). They took it back and I stepped up to a more expensive Uke, but it came with dings. This time I kept the Uke and they gave me a $200 store credit which worked out great. I work with the same guy every time and he helped me a few years ago with a Slash Epiphone LP that had a killer setup without any special request on my side. Overall, I think they got their act together. I'm others may not have had the same luck with them...

Hope, everyone had a great show. Stupid new tabs my veterans drs got me trying. Gone from 2hrs app a night sleep, took to late by mistake woke feeling like hit by a truck flat out. Missing my show as Sat morning in Australia. Wanted to ask question 🤷‍♂️, I’ll be popping to pick up page as had enough of series 2 noiseless in my really nice Fender Deluxe strat 2007, see through blue, rosewood slab neck 9.5 to 12 compound radius really nice to play. Has the original S-1 little button. Yet my Clapton sig USA has series up sound good. Yet Blue (the Strats name) I’m not happy over the years. Decided to not by fender Texas or Seymour D, but to order set from Phil to Australia 😬, yet wanted to replace the rear wide dynamic Humbucker to one of Phil’s Humbuckers to replace it yet only one Humbucker needed not sure order single coil set and if will do a single Humbucker to Aust be better postage $ USA Standard when they where next from custom shop, now 5 Strats a year with all missing one or two higher produced products. Drives me nuts millennials complained standard didn’t sound as good as should. Fender jumped on that brought all the stupid names 3 countries prices all over the place. QC still slight crap, so price hike they want to pick up there game on QC. Or Fenders name will start going into the CBS owned Fenders, worries me to purchase a new Fender of late. Down missed live, needed a lift after shocker week. Stay strong all.. 🫡🪖🇦🇺 (AKA Grumpy Digger)

I made a video that guitar center sucks. Butit aint Guitar Center, its their suppliers. Thank you. I like the people who work at Guitar Center. But I bought a Les Paul Custom electric guitar by Epiphone. I also bought a two year service warranty. A month later, I grabbed my guitar by the strap (and I just watched a KZread video warning people not to do that because your guitar can fall off the strap and get damaged) and it came off and the heat stock cracked. The guitar was ruined. I took it back and Guitar Center took it back and gave me a new one. The problem was the guitar wasnt new. It was a refurbished by Epiphone. It had a worn fret board. Im bummed. I got mad at Guitar Center, but you made me realize it was Epiphone. The guitar was package from the factory. I guess i have to make a video defending GC! Thanks for this video.

I have Bought 2 guitar's from SamAsh and they have went above and beyond what i expected out of them. They reached out after the sale to make sure i was happy and didn't have any issues. my last purchase was a Les Paul 60's model in ice T it arrived flawless. Easily the best guitar guitar out of the box experience i have had. I bought this through their guitars of distinction area from their website which is similar to what Sweetwater offers. I could not be happier. this is my second purchase from them after the new Alex Lifeson model from Epiphone. both arrived in perfect condition and the customer service after the sale was great as well. in both cases i called the customer service rep and received a discount off the MSRP

Phil, ..(you might save this to read, for next time you fly somewhere) 😅 I played only piano for decades. Even though the keyboard that I’ve had for many years has around a thousand sounds in it, I still play the acoustic piano sound on it nearly 75%, electric piano-approximately 20%, and ‘Hammond type sound’ maybe as little as 5%, (depending on whether I’m playing at home, or with others. However, I decided to finally get one of those lowest price of the year electric guitars during the 2020 Black Friday sales, (G.C.) and picked up an Epiphone SG for $170.** + tax. I knew nothing about what I was getting, other than thinking that it was good that it supposedly had a Mahogany body & neck. Anyway, since then, I put a Di Marzio PAF neck pickup on it, a Graphtek nut, Gotoh locking tuners, and a $75.** ‘2 in 1’ Bridge/Saddle, (because it only came with a no adjustable preset thing, which I had no idea what the difference was when I bought it). I mentioned that I prefer to play mostly ‘clean’ piano sound, because with electric guitar, I prefer the opposite, just not too harsh, but as much sustain as possible. Maybe another time, I will comment about the Epiphone LP that I got within the same year, and how I managed to fit a graphtek adjustable nut on it, and why my set of Seymour Duncan pickups are still in their package. Also I got a Hohner smaller scale guitar for lightness & convenience. I would have a Squire Telecaster, but I had to decide whether I wanted to get the best keyboard I could afford, so I put the Telecaster back for now. I’ve definitely learned how many guitar players never stop buying different guitars though. I started this comment just wanting to let you know that, although It sort of slips my mind that your show is on each week,.. (I’ve been subscribed at least a couple of years )…I inevitably see the most recent show pop up when I get on KZread and I often decide to watch, usually sooner than later, I am always glad that I did. I always learn something, and appreciate your honesty. Don’t worry about playing, you know a lot more than I do, and probably more than a hundred thousand people who watch. If you don’t already, just decide on what you want to play, and go over it a few times in advance. More importantly, just try to remember what Al Franken’s character, Stuart Smalley used to say to himself for confidence; ‘I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.’ Thanks for all the good info, see you next week.

When Phillip says, that the "satin nitro" finish, relics' well... does this mean that the finish will 'craze' ? I guess that, exposure, heat and UV light, are all factors, I don't know, but my Epi-LP '59, has a satin, nitro finish - and I would not see it as something bad, if that's what happens to it, over time.

I was just at GC looking for another guitar. Tried many Kramers and Jacksons. All had horrendous Sharp Fret ends and literally unplayable. Same with the Schecters and Fender MIM's. Horrible fret work. The only guitar that was playable of the 12 or so I would consider buying was the Ibanez AZ40. No way I'm paying $300-$700 and the frets are razors. Unacceptable and they shouldnt make it past QC inspection at the factory.

My first guitar was an epiphone Sheraton 2 that I’ve been playing since 2011. Frets are almost gone in some spots. I have a cheap Strat clone someone gave me that I hate and never touch but looks great on the wall. I’d like a nice Tele but somthing about only playing one electric gets me going when this is such a gear heavy industry.

I absolutely love MIM parts, but before I dive into that, let's take a step back. When the MIM shop first opened in the early 2000s, it was primarily producing lower-end items. The quality of products from around 2001, frankly, was not impressive. The parts were subpar, and while the wood was okay, there were quite a few mistakes. However, fast forward to today, and it's a whole different story. I truly believe that MIM has become the new Japan in terms of quality and craftsmanship. Looking ahead, I can even envision a time, maybe 20 years from now, when MIM guitars might become collectible items.

Kramer 84 or Baretta are cool single pup guitars . I must admit i do prefer 3 singles or 2 buckers though . I do appreciate the simplicity of a single pickup model , with a single volume .
