I fully agree- instant isn’t better, more robotic or digital isn’t better, and easier or more convenient is certainly not better. Removing the physical and mental connection to objects and processes creates a hollow experience. This goes for everything from cars to relationships across social media. Without meaningful interaction, the things that make us human are cheapened.

I had a manual Golf GTI as a company car and did 140k over 4 years and every time I stepped out of it, I would look back and say to myself, I love my car. I replaced it with another GTI, a DSG this time, and its become just another car. I like it, I don’t love it. No surprise that it’s getting replaced with a manual Golf R. Each transmission has its place, and sadly the manual will likely not be with us for too much longer. To those who have never experienced a MT, you will never understand what you missed.

KingKrusty I can’t imagine making such a stupid mistake though. If you’re a shitty manual driver then yeah but if you’re good at what you do there are no mistakes. Plus modern day manuals protect the gearbox anyway, you can’t be flying down the freeway then accidentally shift into first. The gates will lock up and it won’t let u.

I love the analogy of "instant" coffee not necessarily a better coffee than a properly brewed/barista'd coffee, when describing the PDK and Manual gearbox shifts. Well said sir. Well said.

Hammer Rocks..... No, no, no, no, no.... One simply cannot compare instant coffee to freshly ground, measured, pressed and finally barista fed coffee. No. Anyone can drive a manual or brew a coffee. So many seem to believe that they can. The reality is, the finesse of a PDK is the perfect coffee, brewed through an algorithmic and precise mechatronic process. Whilst it may seem, detached and too consistent to the pallet... The average expert - let's call you Eddie... Grinds the coffee too fine or too coarse.... Burns the aromatic oils as the hot water passes through and simply ruins the essence of what truly is to be appreciated in the fundamental difference between a manual gearbox being driven properly or with a frustrating incompetence ☕

WheelHeroes I’m an editor but I worked behind the camera for a few years prior. There are some really excellent shots here, ones that you would normally see in a short film at a festival rather than a car video. It’s good work for sure.
I've watched this video dozens of times and I always love it. It so beautifully explains why I love driving my manual transmission cars, even if none of them are a Porsche 911 GT3. Even with that fact, I love driving all 4 of my MT cars. Edit: I just saw this comment I made 2 years ago and I added a new manual to my garage. My new GR Corolla is an absolute blast to drive!!!

I come back to this every so often. Oh to make my boyhood dream come true.
I've never seen anyone relate so well to my driving sensations 😭... My mom's 6 gear Renault Duster makes me feel alive when I drive it, like I'm connected to everything and everyone around and my senses are so keen. But with an auto, it's like my mind gets the luxury to drift away and pay less attention to the engine's rev, the vibration on my feet, the pace of other cars, rev matching, etc. I really hope producers never eventually get rid of the manual gearbox

I know this is a year old reply, but I would also argue that at that point, the car isn't something that you merely FEEL. It essentially becomes your physical body. You are basically acting as a more integral part of it's brain having to disengage and re-engage the clutch and shift gears. It's funny that driving stick also made me a better driver by making me pay attention to different cars attributes.

Porsche is an expert at tweaking the 911 to the point where there are now over 30 variations. In my case I don't like the look of a wing on a street car, like to row my own gears and couldn't care less about a few tenths of a second around a track. As such Porsche was savvy enough to build a naturally aspirated car for a guy like me that couldn't get a 911R a few years ago.

Its cringy to associate being a man with driving skill. Here’s a simple argument, if a bully or rapist knows how to drive manual, does it make them manly? Dont think so. Your actions and attitude and way you treat others make you a man. Nothing else. Would your forefathers in the 1800s that fought battles by hand and sword know how to drive manual? Of course not, and they were likely bigger men than all the shitty “Im a man, I drive manual” rhetoric these days.

@@TheDalitis8 Nice one liner to deflect arguments. This particular figure of speech is in the same category of the constantly repeated statements that attach masculinity and being a 'man' with driving a manual gearbox. Objectively speaking, there is hardly any difference between choosing which gearbox to drive with as choosing an electric toothbrush over a standard toothbrush. Would like you like to hear this? 'A manual toothbrush, one that you row back and forth in your mouth, is what separates the men from the boys'.
