Manual Volvo V70R: 5-Cylinder Forever Car // CARISMA

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

To the untrained eye, Aaron’s 2004 Volvo V70R looks like a plain, anonymous Swedish box. That couldn’t be more wrong.
[CARISMA is The Drive's new series exploring the connection between enthusiasts and their cars. NEW EPISODE OUT TODAY! • Perfect: Toyota MR2 Bu... ]
From its 2.5L turbo five-cyl to its Haldex AWD system to its unique “spaceball” manual shifter, the V70R is a special piece of kit to begin with. But after buying it in college-and ignoring his friends’ doubts-Aaron set about building this 20-year-old Volvo into his perfect do-it-all vehicle to handle track days, road trips, New England winters, and everything in between.
His first project was swapping the exhaust to an 8Eight Fab dual catback in his dorm’s parking lot in the middle of winter. Next came suspension work: TME lowering springs, rear sway bar, upgraded bushings. Then the big stuff: a full interior swap to Atacama, a lightweight flywheel and short-shifter, and swapping the stock motor for a stronger ‘4T5’ five-cyl built by Re-Volv performance shop. Those are just the highlights.
The result? A perfect match of owner and machine, and a true forever car. "It's become this extension of myself. People know me, and they know my car. It goes hand in hand. This is an association with me, and there's nothing else I can find that can really do it,” says Aaron.
It’s also reconnected him to the feeling of joyful exploration he used to get riding around on his bike as a teenager. “It's been this gateway for me into the world. That started as a kid-I loved biking around, I worked at a bike shop in high school. That was my vehicle, so to speak, for getting around and exploring. This car has become that."
The under-the-radar look makes it even better when someone sees it and understands. It’s like a secret handshake for the car community. “It's cool to pull up at a traffic light, somebody rolls down the window and goes 'Oh my god, where did you find this? How did you get one? I can't believe it's manual!' There's nothing better than getting that kind of reaction from somebody from what is just a gray Volvo station wagon."
Watch the video and you’ll see “just a gray Volvo station wagon” is the understatement of the century.
(By the way, his friends get it now.)

I absolutely love what he's done. Like many of us who crave these wagons, I searched for even half-decent examples, but ultimately chose a 2005 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon with the less-than-great manual. I did love that car, though. Which turbo Subaru did he have?

Constructive criticism ahead. I wish you guys all the best, and hope you do well. The footage is well shot, but these videos need a little work on structure and content. A section in the middle where you get into the technical specs and what the owner's done with it, for instance. Also give a brief history of the model itself. Why did Volvo develop the V70R? Why was it special at the time when it was new? Why did they stop producing it, and/or what replaced it? What are some of the things to look for if you want one of your own? Common failures and how he's worked around them? One of the things that made /TUNED great was having someone like Matt come in and give his impressions of the car too. The/Drive should have a journalist who can do something similar. The storytelling and backstory of the owner's experience with the car isn't bad, but it goes on for too long and never changes gears. You need a few acts or chapters within the video. - Ian (supervising producer at /DRIVE, back in the olden days)

Lovely build. More external exhaust audio next time, come on it's the 5 pot we want to hear, right? I bought my 2001 V70 T5 manual for exactly the same reason, always loved something a little different, understated but able to surprise Germans around the bends due to Bilsteins, Eibach springs and decent Eagle F1s. Desperately needs a sixth year though! Had it for 10 years, not selling it.

In my humble opinion, the v70r is the single best all-purpose vehicle ever built by any auto manufacturer. I don't think it has any flaws other than the fact that it is expensive to maintain

as an owner and devil's advocate.. what about the e61? I was deciding between Legacy wagon (5 speed for highway driving no good), v70R and e61 535i. Ended up in the BMW since prices were so similar. I daily mine, hybrid turbos and now at 124k miles. Maintenance on the v70 must be better.

Those swedish plates belong to a 2017 BMW these days, also he's got a rare license plate up front, you can tell by the old tax-sticker (they stopped being a thing in 2010) being on it, those went on the rare plates of the car.

I see what you’re trying to do with the more personal perspective on the cars. There is a guy in OC with a channel called automotive anatomy. His sense of humor isn’t my favorite but he has refined for years what it seems you’re trying to do with this channel, sharing the owner connection. It’s almost all Hondas but you might like his format and editing.

The R does not stand for reliable. I cracked a cylinder liner on a stock motor and replaced motor. Then the ignition lock jammed up. Fixed. Then the transmission heat exchanger in the radiator cracked and dumped coolant into the transmission. All within a month. I'm speedrunning all the R issues.
