A few years ago there was a huge F1 event in London just before the British GP which Hamilton couldn't be bothered to attend and one of the commentators went along the fans asking who was going to win the race and half of the fans said Vettel. That would not have happened thirty years previously because every single one would have said Mansell! In fact if it had been ten years earlier everyone of them would have said Button!

And to this day, Nigel Mansell remains the only driver to be both the F1 and CART champion at the same time It's well worth emphasising that this man did it while Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Paul Tracy, Scott Goodyear and Al Unser Jr were on the same track as him when he went racing in America back in 1993.

I was 10 years old when I went to my 2nd GP of Long Beach in 93. I was an Indy car fan but I had just started following F1 because of the Sega game Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP, so I knew that Mansell was the current F1 champion. Wow, wow, wow. Unbelievable. I watched him since 91. He somehow always got stick for being less than perfect but nothing could be further from the truth. Look at any period interview with him when he was racing. He was ALWAYS magnanimous with his rivals. Always complementing them. Winning or losing. As with his reverence for Jim Clark in his speech here. He was even mates with Ayrton, in many interviews they come across as chums, joking with each other. A real larger than life character. More people should be like him, let alone world class sportsmen. After Senna's death he is the one I look up to. Back when racing drivers were not boys but men. I have never seen him emotional in an interview, but well earned. Truly a magnificent sportsman. Come back to Goodwood in the 14B! We will line up to watch.
I was a big Senna fan but I always admired Nigel's tenacity. And seeing him interact with the fans on this day is awesome!! Way to go Nigel!
Nigel the Lion, my favourite F1-driver of all times - Nigel loves his fans and his fans love Nigel for ever
Legend - watched Nigel in 1987 as a kid and he's responsible for getting me hooked on F1. I wrote to him as a 10 year old through the Williams team after his 87 Suzuka crash telling him to we hoped he get better and that we were looking forward to see him race again soon. Awesome! I was a Senna fan back in the day, but have always appreciate Nigel grit and determination. He won today for sure!👍
This brought tears to my eyes, watching Big Nige back in Red Five - FW14B once again. I was there at Silverstone for all his British GP races in the Williams and Ferrari. (87 and 92 stand out). He's a little greyer and heavier around the waste today and great to see the moustache is back. :) Nigel for me was the greatest British driver. He brought all the fans together, year after year at Silverstone. It was like Last Night of The Proms with all the Union Jacks waving and capacity crowds. The wash out race of 88 when he came second to Ayrton in the wet, driving the under powered Williams Judd and conversely, the heat of 1990 and the pain of sunburn, saw his famous retirement from the race in the Ferrari and the announcement he would retire, only to come back and win the title in 92. Thank you Nigel for the precious memories of those summer race days. They will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Spot on, such a top bloke. Seeing the lads getting slefies with him, spot on.
Grande Nigel. True greatness is never giving up. He fought for the championship in 1986 and a tire took it from him. He fought for the 1987 championship and was unable to participate in the last race. He fought for the 1991 championship and almost could win it, he was close. He finally crushed all his rivals, Senna, Schumacher, Patrese, Häkkinen, Hill, etc., and won the Formula 1 world championship in 1992, with winning records. I've seen all his races from Uruguay since 1981. I thank him because he always put on a show, giving his best, fighting until the last lap, being among the fastest, being a true gentleman on the tracks. Forever Leon.
Legend! Grew up watching Prost, Senna and Mansell.
Grew up watching Nigel what a hero he risked everything to fulfill his dreams even remortgaging his house to pay for his racing career what a man so nice to see him driving that lovely Williams again
Nigel in my mind has done more for the formula one fanbase than any driver before or since. My three standout British drivers , Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart and Nigel. As with Sir Jackie I really do believe Nigel deserves a knighthood for his services not only on but off the track.

Let's not forget he's the only unique open wheel racer to simultaneously hold the F1 Championship & CART championship (CART is Indycar, and back then it was 2nd to F1 that time 1990s was epic). That will never be replicated ever (or who knows?). That's why Nigel is one of the best!

A quote from Peter Sidaway while at the Williams Grand Prix Engineering as being a W.S.C member and meeting Mr F Williams and a photo to prove. Nigel Mansell to me is the greatest F1 driver in the world and the only man to win F1 back to back U.S.A. Indianapolis 500. I saw Nigel win at Silverstone, then also at Brands Hatch see the man doing a donut on starting line braking three valves of the Honda power engine.

I consider him the ultimate gentleman in F1, on and off the circuit. His driving, to me , was phenomenal because of his reaction times and he was just about the only one that gave Ayrton Senna a real hard time without lowering himself to aggressive racing.
