Manly P. Hall "None but the Lonely Heart: The Eternal Quest to be Understood"

"We can stand almost anything better than we can stand being ignored."
From a lecture given on December 6, 1959, in the then-new auditorium at the PRS in Los Angeles. Although it was recorded almost 60 years ago, the message is very much relevant today.

I went to a Scottish Rite "Museum" in downtown San Antonio Texas. I was excited to see what a Masonic "museum" had on display. Nothing. It had nothing but...things member masons had donated. As I walked with the "curator" of the museum, we came upon a "Wall of Honor" where there were many photos of member Masons. I asked the man what a Mason has to do to get on this wall of honor. With the shake of the head and a sidewards glance he said...just donate money. No extraordinary or exceptional works, just donate money. Manly P. Hall, in his book, Words to the Wise, says that at any time, in any generation, there are but a handful of people that can truly call themselves "students" of mysticism. He says that most "teachers" are flat out fakes or not practicing their own teachings. In speaking with the curator of that museum I learned that to become a Mason you had to have a clean criminal record and that a branch in Arizona, I think, was a problem, or was causing a problem, or was in displeasure, because it allowed an ex-con into their chapter. But...anyone who is aware of how our world really works, knows that the real criminals, are the ones making the laws or are, by birth or by their willingness to do as they are told for profit, above the law. I once drove by one of the older neighborhoods in San Antonio, King William's District, and saw a man standing outside a home with a Masonic symbol that was as tall as he, which was lit up like a store sign would be at night. I remember being impressed by it. But, when/where you can "donate" money to get your picture on a wall of "honor," is probably a place that is like, most places of worship, of the world. That photograph, after donating, most likely comes with a pet on the back. We live on a world where there are cowards sitting at home, and even in government buildings, watching and listening in on people in their own homes 24/7/365. In our world we have cowards that run around in networks who espouse an ideal but, the dollar is the only thing they truly worship. It reigns supreme in their minds and their world. These people will put on any guise or disguise necessary. They'll use anybody. We know there there is good and bad in everything. Therefore, there are good chapters and bad chapters in Freemasonry, as in any other group. How does the average person, someone who wasn't born with money or who does not have the "right" job in a "key" position, how does someone like that find the right teacher. They probably don't and they are probably better off for it. Manly P. Hall's book, Words to the Wise was primarily about how most "teachers," "gurus," and "organizations," were either flat out fakes, no qualified, or on the wrong path. If the secret doctrine is indeed Christian, then Christianity tells us that it is straight and narrow. And deviation from that path, no matter how minute, will, in the end, lead us far off from where you wanted to be. Any misinterpretations or misunderstandings, will cause us to fail. Our goal is to walk with God. This life, I don't believe, is the only try he's giving us to get us there. The masons don't own the number 33, they don't own the secrets. If only a handful of people can truly call themselves students in any generation...being true and sincere to ourselves, is the only thing we can do.

Are there "answers" to be found in Masonry? I suspect you can only find answers within yourself. Joining a club and being told a secret can not, in itself, cause a person to grow; each individual must do that work internally. My father was an active Freemason for many years; for him, it was just another social club, like the Kiwanas or the Lion's Club or the Knights of Columbus. It was a place to get together with a bunch of old guys and plan little charity projects and pancake breakfasts, notate the "minutes" of each meeting, and conduct business in their free time outside the 9-to-5 office. Like most Masons, he never rose above the 3'rd Degree. Any symbolism he encountered was surely accepted in the most superficial way, without question or analysis. I never heard the man utter an introspective thought in his entire life. The books he read were not esoteric, or philosophic, but sci-fi and fantasy novels. This is the type of man who comprises the shrinking ranks of modern Freemasonry: just an average guy looking for a social activity.

I cut out TV entirely in 1995 already seeing on an early age observing that its a form of mass manipulation and managing the people. On demand has a healthy entertainment value though. The trick lies in not overindulging or fleeing into the alternate realities that are depicted and keeping your mind focused on what's real. TV is poison because the brain does not distinguish a portrayed fantasy situation from the real and processes it in the same way in the subconscious. It's definitely better to listen to a MPH lecture then 3 hours of nonsensical stuff to distract your mind with meaningless scenarios.

Emerson was I think quite wise when he pointed out that we should take the attitude that we can learn something from everyone and this does not mean that we should copy their faults. It means we have some basis of integrity within ourselves, we will observe also that other persons though they may deffer from us, they may perhaps disagree with us violently, that these persons have ideas and values that it would good for us to know. I think it is a mistake for people to base their associations entirely on compatible factors. This is the easy way. It is the way in which seems to be less stress and strain but it is also the way of least personal growth, least instruction and least value from life. "Manly P Hall."

Unfortunately in 1959 Manly Hall had no idea what would become of our western society and how absolutely morally defective we would be and in turn corrupt our children, I doubt he would be praising the raising of a child with liberal values if he could see what those liberal values of today were. This is one lecture where unfortunately Manly Hall was very out of touch with what the future held for us as a society and just how far we would fall.
