Managing Your Emergency Water

We address the kind of containers to use, how to prepare the containers and the water for storage, how to sanitize the water if it becomes contaminated, and how to help it taste better after it has been stored for a long time.
Correction: I pint of base solution will sanitize 12.5 gallons of water.

I never though in a million years we would have to worry about having enough food in the Unites States. But the last 2 years have really opened my eyes. I have just begun my long term storage journey. I was wondering how we would get fresh water. I just ordered the Calcium Hypochlorite that solves one of my problems. Thanks so much for all the information.

I agree - her video on that opened my eyes too - we have a pool on our property and buy shock every year... I am sure what we buy isn't qualified for water purification but I surely am going to buy several bags of what RoseRed says to buy - and shock for our pool is very expensive so expect what you buy to purifiy your water is expensive too... but that bag I think will go a long way compaired to me putting it in my 7000 gallon pool.

Rose! I wanted to bring to your attention when I clicked on the calcium hypochlorite link to Amazon I noticed the packaging was different and upon looking at the active ingredient it lists "other" as well. I see it does have algae killer in it so I thought perhaps they linked a new version of TKO to the old description. They don't realize an "improved" version would be something we can't use. I could be wrong, but I wanted to bring to your attention.

When my mom was teaching me to pressure can back in '62 (I'm old) she taught me to pressure can water, because it was a good way to learn to pressure can without risking wasting food if the jars didn't seal. We also store water in the freezer, which along with blankets to fill voids in the freezer, helps keep food frozen for days. Why have water storage? One need only STOP and think about how much water one uses daily to see how valuable water is. Hope for the best, plan for the worst. Thankfully around here most folks have solar well houses or old-fashioned Amish style hand water pumps on their back porches.

Great video, as always! Many in the "prepper" community recognize that if people are going to be highly active, then 3 gallons minimum per person, per day is what you want to plan to have. Much of that is going to be for drinking, but then you also have washing yourself and cooking. Some even plan for 5 gallons per day. Obviously the elderly and the very young will not use so much, but do we want to put our eggs in that basket? Also, the person may not be able to participate in group washing and cooking activities, so do we really want to PLAN on them being able to do it? I think that too many fail to address recycling the water we would use in that situation and we need to be practicing that NOW because trying to learn it then is not the time. Just things for each person to think about for their own situation. Awesome job letting people know about pool shock, Pam! Simply fantastic!

Great video! During the 2020 lockdowns, bleach was unobtainable...I am a bleach user (my choice) for my laundry and mopping my floors and bathroom cleaning. I used a 2.5 gallon blue water container and made the solution according to the EPA guidelines. Although I did not have a water sanitizing use for it, I was able to use it as regular bleach for my needs... Woo hoo for the 3 year anniversary! Nope, not going to use my water for flushing the toilet. I lift the seat and line it with these really thick bags I have and it gets taken out to the trash once a day. You can add some cat litter if you want in the bag to assist with absorption and smell. Yep..thick plastic bags and cat litter will take care of the..well you know. I have done this lots of times and it works, great when camping too. I have learned so much over the years from folks that are Nomads. They know how to manage power, food and storage and of course manage water usage. They are experts as many of them have been doing these things for many years. KZread has thousands of videos on Nomadic living and off grid living. Some prepping videos age great too. I do really suggest to have some portable power using solar panels with battery storage like a Jackery or a bluetti. The bigger the unit the more you will have to keep things going that are essential like any medical devices or even a refrigerator. Learned it all on KZread.

Love how in depth and to great detail you relay all of this, very informative! Fabulous shirt too. Thank you so much for providing all these great videos, I had no idea about the pool shock being an alternative to bleach, I already knew about the short shelf-life of chlorine bleach and I don't really use it that often to begin with so it always seemed a waste to store it and have to restock every six months for water sanitation purposes, if you can even remember to do so! My partner hates the tap water here in north west Florida so he bought us a gallon water distiller but it takes hours to distill and just wouldn't be efficient for storing water purposes, with the little money we have I hope to try and slowly add these things to our stock so that we are prepared in the future.

I listen to another KZread channel, and he says the '7 P's' at the end of his videos: Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance It is better to have and not need, than need and not have. Just remember to rotate stock lol!

JeannineS: Yes, always rotate on a regular basis, which means you have to use (older) items in front, and add new ones to the back of your stock pile. Jim

Pam, what a wonderful way to sanitize and use the water.. We are blessed to have a well on our property and we went and bought a manual pump to use if the electric goes out. We also just this year bought solar panels, enough to run the whole house! Not up yet but we will get there! I always by the sodium chloride powder. Defiantly more cost effective than buying the bleach. I love your videos, so informative and you are a wonderful teacher! Congrats on 3 years! I have not seen all your videos yet, being spring I'm out in the garden... Be safe and God Bless!!!

Once again you are a plethora of information. Also you build confidence that allows us to do what we need to do . I live north of Houston and hurricane season is just around the corner. Not yo mention all the others stuff that is happening in our world.imgetting a count on my water . Because I could have a house full of people in a short period of time . And god knows my grandchildren are not prepared.but they will come to nana .

We live in the country and when I store water I also use containers for flushing toilets as well. Our tank takes about 2 gallons so we also prepare for this as well. During a winter ice storm it is not unusual for us to be out of power for up to a month so it's great to have. I do love the idea of using canning jars for water storage until use. How clever!!

Pam, I have been prepping since 1998. I started with the "Cassandra Project" to prepare for Y2K possibilities. I must tell you that of all the sites I have visited and all the information I have gathered, yours is by far the most relevant. The information you teach us is both invaluable and entertaining. I love the science of it. I love the practicality. I do not know why I never found your channel until 2 days ago but, I guess when the student is ready......Thank you so very much for all your help. I now know what my family is getting for Xmas this year. Barb in Brunswick, VA
