After a month you're in the territory of initial success and commonly a marker to revert to party behaviour.. it's approximately 33% of the psychological benchmark of destiny because 90 days is the new magic number.. around this period the human brain mysteriously develops a lesser known compound super-freak ability known in the ancient texts as "common sense" or as the French philosophers termed as "Le common sense or rationale" ..this calculation is met with the addition many hundreds of dollars in diverted drinking money minus every filthy hangover in modern history.. Amen to that

Hang in there! I made it 4 months sober last April - July and one day thought, " Hey, now I can be one of those people that drinks one day a week." and had 3 or 4 beers with a friend at his pool. 7 months later and I'm drinking 8-10 beers daily again. I realize now that it's all about truly knowing what you want and understanding your limitations. I'll never be one of those occasional drinkers, so I have to do without.

My go-to sub for beer is no calorie flavored seltzer water. I literally go through about three 12 packs a week. Yeah, that's a lot but it's better than twice that in beer and a fraction of the cost.

My favorite part about where I am in my sobriety is that I'm doing it, that I'm no longer watching videos like this and "thinking" about doing it while still drinking. I wanted to quit drinking for years and yet never got up the nerve to do it, which looking back feels so unfortunate. But, I'm doing it now and have been for almost 9 months, and that's so much better than starting tomorrow, or in another year or five from now. :)

It has taken me years to get where I am now, just about 2 months alcohol free. Back in 2015 I started cutting back after my mom passed of liver cancer (not alcohol related) but was still getting drunk and drinking too much. Cutting back did make life a lot better but was still drinking too much. In 2019 I drove off the road almost hit a tree and almost rolled my car into a river because I drank too much and got arrested. 4 days later my dad passed from cancer related to alcoholism. Even while in the hospital dying he still kept asking me for beer. Even after all that I still couldn't kick drinking completly and has taken me a year and a half to finally realize theres just nothing positive about drinking for me personally. Cant gurantee I'll kick it for life but taking it one day at a time and not thinkong too far ahead has helped a lot. Friends have not been very supportive but I have to live with my decisions and they don't. I feel better every day and look forward to tomorrow.

I'm certain a couple of my friends will think I've been swapped out by aliens when they hear I don't drink these days but take my advice and don't announce it ..to anyone.. on social media or in groups at all as it only puts yr personal situation under unnecessary pressure and unhelpful scrutiny .. very close friends the type of which will be supportive and some help to you are the only ones you need explain anything to.. everyone else? Let them discover for themselves and when you do get the big question "why aren't you drinking?" followed by "what's the matter with you ?" (like there has to be something seriously wrong with you cos yr not already hammered with us..) try telling them " I'm taking a year off the booze " .. it's a really good answer.. it's not forever so they don't think you've lost your mind or your reason to live but actually something that most people wish they could do if they could.. it works for me and all the hardcore crowd that know me expect to see me on the other side of Christmas 2022 with the £7K+ I saved .. believe me you spend far less time feeling you have to justify the whole decision to everyone you run into if you front it as crazy ambitious health trip challenge. If anything people have been congratulating me sometimes in awe of my self control instead of wondering what the hell could have happened to me.. so much more savoury than telling them that 4 of my smoking drinking buddies have died horribly of smoking/ drinking related diseases in 12 months and I don't want to be next or live the life of an addict for another year and counting.. and don't levitate in front of them or show them yr ray gun.

When talking about quiting long term, I try not to look too far ahead. If I do it can be depressing in a way so I definitely considerate it but take things day by day. As far as peer pressure I can't jam with my buddies right now cause of the pandemic. Where I am we're in lockdown and stay at home orders so its probably the best time to quit in that regard as long as you can keep busy lol. The most peer pressure I have right now is the beer store beside the grocery store we go to. It will be 3 weeks for me tomorrow and I am extatic. I didn’t prepare to get sober... intentionally. But I did one particular thing I’m so happy about: In the months before I was sober, I’d made a bunch of sugar free desserts (I eat low carb because insulin resistant.. probably from the beer..?). I had hardly eaten them because I lost my sweet tooth a couple years into alcoholism. But they are so yummy and made up of fruit and other healthy things! So I get to satisfy my newfound sugar craving and am at least getting some nutrition out of it!

Episode 154 brought me here. Currently 31 days sober, and I've been struggling these last few days. I spent the first month just not putting alcohol in my mouth, and now I'm trying to create new routines but can't seem to find the right balance. I'm either not doing enough because I've set little to no expectations for the day, or I'm overwhelmed when I do. It's extremely frustrating. 😩 But I guess that's where the patience comes into play. The fact that I've made it far enough in my sobriety journey to have to worry about the patience aspect is a win, I suppose. 😅 Regardless, these videos are a lifesaver. I wish I could hit the like button more than once. The number of times I rewatch some of these is ridiculous. ❤❤❤

We must also budget our time for stress, rest, and rejuvenation. The constant grind of staying busy will wear you out. When you have "extra time" remind yourself of this very important fact: Remember all the times you were stuck having to go to work and you thought to yourself "THERES NOWHERE I'D RATHER BE THAN HOME!!!" You EARNED the right to be home. It is your sanctuary. Make it your palace of comfort 😎

SOLID advice. I was on day 3 last time I commented, and then shortly after I fell off the path. But that's ok. I did have lofty expectations...I was like heck yeah baby! woo! 90 days sobers gunna be legit lol and I didnt make a week. However, I actually am in this for the long run fellas. It is a comforting thought to know when you restart you have that much more experience and understanding of the sobriety journey. Thanks again Jae. Day 1 04/29/21.

Great segment on our to-do lists. Jae what do you think about the theory that cravings only last an average of 3 minutes? I read that somewhere and I think it's true. The other night I cleaned my home office, something I've been putting off. By the time I finished I was good - no more alcohol craving

I think that you should personally take up the challenge of timing or cravings and reporting back to us your findings good sir!!! Yeah that definitely seems to be the case in my opinion. But sometimes at 3 minutes is all we need to give in to the temptation of just sabotaging the rest of our night and not giving a s*** anymore right?

It's that damn inner voice trying to rationalize a "reward" for all my hard work. Simple solution: I just do something, anything to busy myself. I have watched a lot of your videos, but I think this one is so important. Consider republishing it. The build up is a little slow (maybe edit) but the point about breaking the habits/traditions and cycles that got us here is key and we all need to be reminded. Do something different, drive a differnet route, make different friends and find new hobbies, it is almost like we need to break the habit by interference.

Are you SURE you don't want some vodka for that toothache? I'M going to have some vodka...are you SURE you don't want just a LITTLE?" and my BEST FRIEND, who I told didn't have to stop drinking in front of me, brought a six pack with her on a visit and drank it on the couch next to me...then announced "Hey, I'm going to THE bar, sure you don't wanna go? Wanna go camping with me in May?" and I'm thinking "HELL NO!" I guess I shoulda told Linda to NOT drink around me. I had no idea she would kinda almost sabotage me like that. I can't EVEN imaging going on a camping trip alone with her when all she DOES is drink...no hiking, no reading, no exercise, no art, no music making, no intellectual conversations...YIKES.
