That was my first thought maybe I should up the calcium. So far I’ve lost 2 out of 400+ so I guess I’m OK. 🙂 I’m still learning.

😢I'm so sorry ...those orchids have new growth and good roots so there is hope for them. Here in SA if your orchid has black rot , the orchid is taken out of the collection and burned. I feel so sorry for them , I would try and save it. 😢 but keep it far away from your other orchids. Wash hands and tools well spry it with some alcohol as well. You don't want to transfer that to your other orchids. All the best. 😎

I’m also in Miami and had black rot starting on cattleyas mounted on a palm tree. I cut back any area on the plant that appeared infected and dunked the plants overnight in a mixture of Banrot and Aliette. I left the plants bare root and kept them away from any other orchids and 1 week later, the orchids seem to be surviving without any additional disease. I also sprayed the nearby cattleyas with peroxide and cut away any sign of black spots on leaves or new growth. One week later, the rot seems to be under control. I’m planning to spray for fungus every 2 weeks for the next month. Hope this helps!

I’ve been on top of them with the fungicide but it’s hard to keep up & now today we got so much rain again 😭. Wow it looks so pretty in the tricolor Rootsie pot 🥰 I think that was one of the orchids that I got for my bday!

I can feel your pain with the fungus issues. It is sad but I guess that this is a way of allowing us to get more orchids (that may be a little more resistant). One of my first orchids was Llory Anne 'Paradise' - I lost her many years ago but a few of her progeny live on....

when i have this situation, i do like you; i cut all that black rot as much as possible, then i spray with banrot, dithane m45 that i'm pretty sure you may have and let the orchid dry for about 2 weeks no watering to observe the plant; in some cases i wait to see new roots or new growth then i repot or mount.

I hear the sadness in your voice. I'm so sorry. I know how much you love your orchids. The Black rot is probably from all that rain. Look, I hope this one recovers. If it doesn't, it's an opportunity to go shopping again.

I wonder if this is the same problem I keep having with a Cahuzacara. The p-bulbs start to rot and die in order of age, oldest creeping up to youngest, and the second time I even unpotted it as soon as I got it home, but it already started and I mounted it after dividing, part on a clay mount and part on cork. My space gets 100% humidity for 6-8 hours per night, so I always have to be almost as wary of water as willing to add it when needed, which is daily for most of them, as I try to use as little media as possible. My personal saying is "If it's potted it's rotted.", because with 100% humidity all night there's no way to give the dry periods needed to stave off the bad bacteria/fungi, as it stays wet, EVEN IF WE STOP WATERING, if it's in a regular pot with organic media. I haven't tried re-potting in rock/clay substrates. There's one Vanda falcata in a hollow sphagnum ball but it's def. an exception and not a rule, and if it weren't hollow I'm sure it wouldn't work for me either.

Black rot is the worst! Just remember to not touch other orchids with your hands until you sanitize them. And when cutting black rot alway fire your tools as you cut each part even if it’s the same orchid, black rot spreads fast. I have one that keeps getting black rot for some reason and I live in an apartment. I will have to cut that part and I am thinking to take it out of the pot and redoing it to see if I can save her. So sorry you lost your orchid. But on the good side, you have many places to go and get yourself a brand new one. Although, I feel you, I get very sad to loose any of my orchids. 😢🥹🌷🙏🌷🥰 😢
