MANAGEMENT CONSULTING PRESENTATION - How consulting firms create slide presentations (Ex-McKinsey)

Top management consulting firms such as McKinsey, BCG or Bain use special techniques to create their PowerPoint slide presentations. In this video, I give you an overview into the most commonly used slide design principles that MBB consulting firms use. It covers frequently used PowerPoint slide elements such as callouts, bubbles, waterfall charts, structure elements, clotheslines, takeaway boxes and much more. Drawing from my 6 years of experience having worked at McKinsey, I show you what MBB consulting firms (McK, BCG, Bain) teach their rookies in their onboarding programs. Learn management consulting presentation skills by understanding the consulting presentation examples I show you. These strategy consulting PowerPoint presentation examples will help you understand how McKinsey PowerPoint slides look like (or those of other management consulting firms). Improve your slide presentation skills: Learn to create consulting PowerPoint presentations and learn to work with PowerPoint! Slide writing is one of the key skills to master as consultant.

    Great video and thank you for sharing your knowledge! Another tip I would like to highlight in addition to the ones mentioned are: 1) Font type, size and style - don't overdue it, keep things simple e.g. 2-3 at most. 1) The same goes for general color range. Simplify them e.g. use one for negative and another for positive developments. Try to align them with your presentation template colors, avoid the rainbow. Thank you Heinrich, I learned great tips from this video.

    This is awesome! One point I think you can highlight as well is the importance of visual formatting, particularly the usage of colors. For example, in the waterfall graph that shows changes in EBITDA, negative-EBITDA factors can be colored light red while positive can be light green. This makes it easier for someone to just look at the slide and "get it".

    This is great! This is something we can't learn outside of the consulting firm. As a small business owner, I think the presentation layer is as important as the analysis process. Or I can say the better presentation slides also helps the clear analysis. Thank you Heinrich for another valuable session on management consulting. I really loved the concepts on waterfall chart and where to use them and why we should refrain from the clothlines into more logical structures.i think your course on ceo presentation is one of the most valuable course so far to make structured presentations and I personally feel this is something even top business schools and large consulting firms dont teach or share. I would really recommend your course and all your videos and look forward to more new thinking and helpful consulting tips. I also think how to leverage meeko charts is something will be valuable to know in future seasons and what situations we should use different grids 2x2 and also how to.create our own hypothesis and validate same top down and bottom up Thank you again for so much guidance and valuable tips. Great video! Thanks for sharing your experience. The content is outstanding and I learned a lot and will subscribe to your channel. Three tips to make it a 10/10 video: - love that you kept your camera on when recording the slides. I found it a bit distracting that the video is on the bottom right corner and you looked to the right as well. Consider putting the video on the left or mirror the video. This will make you look at the great content you produce. - you have a window in your background. This is always a difficult setup for lightning when recording a video - since you use you mouse pointer to show things it would help to use a mouse pointer highlighter to focus

One side question: I am curious about what you are using in daily work to deal with researching incl. collection info, distilling insight in reports and managing knowledge which then can be the input of your presentation. Hi Heinrich. Great guide. It would be great to learn from you any tips on how to write up the commentary on the slides and the style you take. I

  • @FirmLearning

    @FirmLearning

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Tak, Thanks for watching and your comments! Frankly, in consulting (at least what I experienced at McKinsey) people do not usually write down commentaries for the slides. Probably due to three reasons: 1) Slides are usually already supposed to "stand for themselves" with all the relevant facts and information on the page. Therefore no need to provide even more data in excess of that. 2) Due to the tight deadlines, teams often make changes until the very end, now also spending time on writing commentaries would just be too much to handle. 3) Consultants, especially the more senior ones then presenting the content to senior clients, usually are pretty strong at presentation skills, also because they do it so frequently. They are trained to present slides without the need of specific "talking points". The partner who walks in and delivers the presentation with slides he has never seen before is also kind of a meme in consulting in itself ;) Hope this makes sense to you. However, writing good end effective summaries / minutes after important meetings or similar briefings is a skill you need more frequently in consulting. Doing this well is not trivial. So yes, this might be a good idea for future videos, have added this to my idea list for future content! :) Best and thanks, Heinrich

  • @FirmLearning

    @FirmLearning

    Hi, usually the higher the font size, the better. Most pages have a font size between 12 and 18 based on the type of page. Font size smaller than 10 should be avoided! Best, Heinrich

  • @FirmLearning

    @FirmLearning

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi! No, animations are very rarely used in these settings. Main reason is that documents are not optimized for presentations, often they are just printed out for meetings / sent around as a PDF without ever actually being presented. Best! Heinrich

    Hi, thanks for watching! Windows is still the standard, main reason (imo) is that programs like Excel still have compatibility issues if you work with more complex / advanced models. You do not want to risk that the file does not work correctly when you send it to the client for these reasons. Best! Heinrich

    Where can I get these stickers you mentioned (e.g. for discussion, illustrative, etc.)? I've seen people using ones that looked exactly like the ones you showed, so I assume they are common and pre-made. Also, how do you put them easily? Do you have some kind of reference slide with all these stickers or just make one manually when you need it? Thanks!

  • @FirmLearning

    Hi, these are not special objects, but just a text box and simple lines aligned to the left and to the bottom of the text box. This way you can easily change the text by editing the text box. Hope this helps! Best, Heinrich

    Hi, is there a reason a lot of consultants often use ThinkCell over a more automated dashboarding program such as Power BI or Tableau? Or are these BI tools like Power BI and Tableau also often used in top consulting firms?

    Hi, thanks for your comments! Of course, in some situations it might be justified to use longer lists of elements, e.g., when you want to show some sample answers of survey participants. Indeed, grouping the answers into overarching themes would be a great way to still introduce structure! Best, Heinrich
