As a United fan, I'd definitely say United but I'd not be disappointed if we didn't in this season. Erik ten Hag needs time to play his football and we already love what he has been able to do even though the team isn't currently playing his kind of football. On the other hand Arteta really has not many excuses left if he doesn't reach the top 4 this season though.

Fair play to Joe for calling out how Carragher thinks 6 games is "too early to judge" Martinez, when he'd already judged him after two games.

Maguire and Shaw were the problem for the first two games. Martinez has won two MOTM awards, from what I've seen he is more than capable of being a top level CB in the PL. Because Carragher was so vocal of his criticism of Martinez he is just refusing to backtrack and will have a Souness/Pogba type agenda for the remainder of his United career.

Same shit with Robbie. They're absolutely delusional because they've won a few games in a row. As Adam rightly said, they finished behind a Spurs team last year that switched managers halfway through, and were 1 position above United who had 3 managers and collapsed during the season. When Gary and Joe say that if Jesus is injured Arsenal are done as a top 4 prospect, suddenly Robbie changes what he's talking about. They're acting as if United got completely lucky with all of their goals, rather than the fact that Ten Hag out-managed Arteta in the last 20 minutes of the game. Do they not understand that Ten Hag was also a Pep assistant, and has gotten far further in the Champions League than Arteta ever will, with a worse team? The moment Joe and Adam start talking about how United have a substantially better squad depth then Arsenal, Robbie goes 'you're naming names, I'm naming tactics'. Like yeah Robbie, its all well and good having a great starting XI, but when your backup forward is Eddie Nketiah vs Cristiano Ronaldo, you've lost the debate.

Why? He only has strident, interesting opinions when he's talking about himself. He was on TalkSport a year or so agi and he was dull as dishwater.
The argument on Martinez boils down to this for me. How did we play with Maguire, park the bus counter attack and he didn’t need pace for a ball in behind he had height to defend loads of Ariel balls because that’s how teams attacked us when we sit in the box. Martinez is going to play in a high line and has 9/10 qualities everywhere but height. His Ariel ability is still extremely underrated. But fact is when you defending playing a high line you face balls in behind not crosses for the majority of the time. You can face 5 crosses when playing a high line per 90 but face 15-20 when parking the bus for example. So yes he’s 5 ft 9 but the risk is actually minimal because the style we play means he isn’t gonna face those deadly crosses into the box anywhere near as often. But he has the pace to defend those balls in behind which Maguire doesn’t and we’ve seen how that went against team who we had a chance to attack and play a high line against at the start of the season. Furthermore we’ve played counter attack and defended deep and won the last 4 only conceding 2 goals and been one of if not best defences in the league when playing the back 4 we have after swapping out Maguire and shaw. And we’ve had to therefore defend all those Ariel balls in the last 4 games. So he’s even proving people wrong there as well already

Maguire is hated alot, somewhat justified but yes it is true his aerial ability is pretty much unmatched. 2 seasons ago, maguire aerial duels stats were higher than van dijk himself. Gary Neville keeps asking the question, why the big change? Where its come from. Its quite simple. He's dropped those horrible players in Maguire, Shaw AWB and Lindelof. The back 4 has been totally revamped. The midfield has a deep lying playmaker in Eriksen. ETH has dropped the egos. He's controlling the team. Simple.
@siouzsie

@Lance Strudwick That’s because all the media talks about is Ronaldo being dropped, yet it remains silent over Maguire being dropped. I mean how deliberately disingenuous of Neville to claim he hasn’t a clue why Manchester United turned it around after the the initial disaster when he knows it’s the change ETH made to the defense. He dropped Ronaldo because he has had to tweak the style to be more counter attacking formation and Ronaldo isn’t fast enough for that.

@Lance Strudwick Because it's not true. If you watched the arsenal United game, United banged two in as soon as Ronaldo came on because his presence alone dragged two defenders to him and allowed Rashford space to play into. Whose a scarier attacking prospect, one half of the two best players of this generation or Marcus Rashford? Ronaldo doesn't have to do anything, him being there is enough of an attacking threat. It's why Son of Tottenham scores a lot of goals, Harry Kanes presence drags defenders away from their space.

@Lance Strudwick I was gonna say bro lmao like the reason United scored those two goals was because Arsenal insisted on their high line and Rashford was always gonna abuse that. It's not like that plan was just dead in the water until Ronaldo came on. Also kinda bullshit for that guy to credit those goals to Ronaldo because they happened after he came on when you know what else happened 2 MINUTES after Ronaldo got on the field? Arsenal equalized, but mentioning that would ruin his narrative

It was a foul. That Erickson foul is getting conflated in with the other terrible VAR decisions at the weekend as if it's somewhat comparable. It was slow, poor play from Erickson but he gives him a slight push in the back, kicks his leg and makes zero contact with the ball. It's also a challenge from behind. It's a foul.
@TPH250290

It was the right decision, but it’s the clear and obvious bit which frustrates me. The ref was right in front of it, and didn’t think it was a foul until he watching a slow mo 50 times pushed him to what was the right decision. And you can guarantee they’ll be a challenge like that in every game from now until the end of the season and it won’t get called.
@DedLoko

From an Arsenal perspective there was a “soft foul” on Ramsdale the week before that cost us a goal as it wasn’t given and there could have been a penalty on Nketia from Maguire who grabbed his neck and never played the ball. It’s the consistency or lack there of that frustrates more than the actual decision which was probably was a foul on Eriksen.
@magikarpsplashy
Жыл бұрын
I don't really think the argument is whether it's a foul or not, it's whether VAR should be bringing the game back for that. We scored a goal against Liverpool a few seasons back where Lindelof fouled Origi just before we scored. I'd have been fuming if they disallow that for a foul in the other half of the pitch. Even as a United fan, I don't think that goal should be disallowed, however the ref should've seen the foul. Arsenal didn't lose because they had a goal ruled out in the 12th minute though
@paulmallon9292
Жыл бұрын
Thats my basic point. The decision was correct. We can discuss the implementation of VAR which obviously needs a lot of work especially around consistency of decisions. But this decision was correct and it being not given, incorrectly in other games doesn't mean the wrong decision should be made on this one in the interest of balance.

To me being 5ft9 is no different to being a defender who is slow, or isn’t great on the ball or isn’t built like a tank - as long as every other aspect of your game is on point you can play and even excel at the position.

Yeah, it's about being efficient. When Arsenal were dominating the ball in the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half, they had a few good chances, with at least 2 they should have definitely scored, before United's 2nd goal. Up until that point, Arsenal were largely leading United in most metrics, but the goal and Arsenal's substitutions changed the game. Eventually, Arsenal made a mistake in a defensive transition and United scored their third. At this point, their xG largely became equivalent. United defended well as a team to see the game out then. If Arsenal were more clinical in their finishing the game could have been very well won by them, and we might have been bashing United for not trying to play as much and trying to hit Arsenal on the counter. As is with so many other PL games, this was a game of moments.

the only issue I have with our performance was the game management from Arteta. After we scored to make it 1-1 it felt like we went to schoolboy mode where it was everyone was bombing forward and everyone out of position. We needed the manager captain to step up and tell them lets just calm it down and try not to force it which is what cost us in the end.

Carl touched on a very interesting point near the end in that owners of clubs don’t make decisions emotionally how football fans would regarding their clubs which causes frustration. I agree with this to an extent but I think with the Glazers it’s not that they’re making non-emotional decisions it’s that their making poorly calculated decisions with the emphasis always on short-term profit and security of their positions in mind and not the long-term success of the club which would actually secure their priorities way more effectively. The problem we have at Utd is that we always make money, even after what will have been a dire commercial season last season we’re still able to spend and they’re still able to take out their dividends and no meaningful long-term changes get made again really, just changes of personnel employed. Then you factor in the fact that for utd unlike the clubs around us the fans wholly finance our operations and the debt the glazers put on us, rather than the debt being used to finance our short-term operations or having billionaire investment like our rivals, the unaccountable poor decision making of owners who should have never been allowed to have buy the club in the way they did becomes absolutely infuriating.
Gary and Carragher are very good. Although there are some wrong predictions in the past and its their opinions. I still think they are the best pundits right now. If you look ESPN pundits, these two are way ahead. Kuddos to both the teams fans. Looking forward for more.
Maguire and shaw didn't play the pre season games we won....they havn't played the games we won in the league..... So simple
