Yeah! Back when I was a kid in the 70's and 80's when checking your bag was still free, the luggage handlers outside at the curb would want to see your plane ticket to verify that you're actually a passenger, put a ticket on your luggage and give you the tear off stub. When you got to your destination and picked up your bag from baggage claim and went to walk outside the airport there were airline employees standing at the exit checking to make sure your stub matched the one on your baggage. If it matched you were allowed to leave the airport with your bag. Those "luggage guards" as my mother called them were a permanent fixture at airports. What the hell happened to them?

In December of 1960, I went to visit my grandparents (when I was five years old) for Christmas. Delta airlines lost my suitcase, and I never got it back. It traumatized me. I've never checked a piece of luggage since and I'm 67 years old. If I can't fit it in a carry on bag, I'm not taking it with me, so I've become extraordinarily adept at packing.

Some people pack very deeply sentimental, sadly Irreplaceable things to take with them on certain special trips or even just bring a specialty item meant to be given to someone waiting for them at their destination that can never be replaced or compensated for, such as: -- Bringing your Mothers ashes to another sibling who truly couldn't come to her funeral (because of them or their child being hospitalized at the time of the funeral). -- bringing the old favorite teddy bear of a dying hospitalized child, cancer patient, or even just a very sickly relative, to them in a different state/country. -- bringing Family heirloom(s) for special occasion like wedding, Generations old cultural family tradition celebration, a funeral, or a birth or just a significant religious ceremony, old family photo albums/old passed down scrapbooks etc. -- or just bringing something sentimental/special to a great grandparent or sickly relative because you know that this flight may be the last time you get to see them alive again. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say airports stopped securing carousels because... they don't have to. I not a frequent flyer, I usually travel by air three times a year (holidays and vacations) but I imagine this is a bigger problem than just this incident. The air tags is a good idea. But also put mini key padlocks on your luggages so they don't get opened by whoever is handling them. Some travelers even wrap tape around their luggages so it'll be easy to tell if the seal has been broken and the luggage has been opened by someone.

Agree. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for TSA employees intentionally break and discard these locks, because they're too lazy to grab the tsa key to open them to inspect luggage. Common at Tampa Airport. They've even broken built in tsa approved locks, permanently damaging new luggage. I have to buy multiple tsa locks because of this reason, and carry spare locks. Still i lock.
