You guys need to listen to the whole clip, don't use an out of network atm. Fyi, practically anyone in the us can put an atm anywhere. The bank has nothing to do with them, just like they don't own the cash machines at Walmart. So what if I use an atm that a friend owns and we edit the footage, should the bank still pay, after my friend gives them the edited version? With huge amounts be careful.

@@texan-american200 There's a lot of ignorance in this video and in the comments - the ATM didn't "eat" the deposit, the ATM already read his ATM card, so the bank _knows_ who started the deposit transaction, and as noted elsewhere, it would be obvious that there was an excess of cash in the ATM's receipts magazine, so it is likely the customer would have been credited anyway. Whoever the customer spoke to at the bank's call center was unhelpful and disrespectful, and there is no excuse for that, but the video images captured were likely irrelevant to the reconciliation and investgation of the excess cash - the record of the ATM card would be sufficent to allocate the cash correctly to the customer's account. IMO the biggest mystery is why the customer went to the TV station, as that is the last place I would have thought to take my issue/ concerns about a lost deposit.

Generally private companies or the bank will upkeep the ATM and audits do not happen. The programming is quite simple such as x number each denomination in the ATM and how much to dispense, in addition to scanning checks or cash. It’s best to not deposit any cash in an ATM, better a money order and keep the receipt for large amounts. The employees at the bank will not care, it’s not their money and it’s easier to deny things vs really looking into things which is sad.

I’m glad he got his money back. Also I noticed that many people in the comments are saying that he should deposit the funds in person. The video also suggests this as well. However, I disagree. If you have a cash based business, many times banks are closed when you are done working for the day. Many people don’t like walking around with that much cash, and the ATM machines allow one to safely put that money somewhere. These ATM machines a large majority of the time work. This instance that he encountered was a rare outlier event I believe. Sure I guess one could keep the money in a safe at home until taking it to the bank the next day , but that still results in you having cash on you in public longer than if you took the money directly to the ATM initially. Given how he was treated and due to the malfunction, I would change banks. I have had no issues with deposits into Wells Fargo and Regions bank ATMs
