I once visited the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and I was looking for a quiet place to relieve myself. After I stopped, I looked around to make sure nobody was in sight. As I looked ahead, I saw a huge elk just chilling out sitting on the ground. He never flinched and I never took another step forward, lol. I took a few pictures of him and just looked at his massive size for a few minutes and eventually went the opposite direction. We can admire these creatures in a respectful and safe manner. I never understand why people get really close to these wild animals. The guy is lucky he wasn't killed.

My first season working in Yellowstone my roommate and I took a drive through the park and after awhile seen a group of tourists running and we were looking to see what they were running from, nothing was chasing them they were chasing a mama grizzly and a her 2 cubs. We had to find the rangers to protect the bears and the tourists. They just don't learn. Those kinds of mistakes can get you killed.

The elk bull was initially charged with Harassing Tourists, a class E misdemeanor, but the charge was dropped when the herd showed up at city hall. The sheriff stated he wouldn't have room for him in jail anyway until spring when he shed his antlers. The bull is quoted as saying he was considering his legal options.

Elk are NOT 'normally docile' animals.. If you get too close to them (ESPECIALLY during the rut [DOUBLE ESPECIALLY if the dominant bull elk is around]), somebody will get hurt- usually the dumbass tourist..

@@natedawg1007 Black bears mostly just get a bad wrap,and can be frightened off fairly easily w out anyone being harmed - except for when dumbass humans start FEEDING them,which makes the bear more dangerous due to its lack of fear of humans. There's one town nearby in which someone had a black bear chillin' in their hammock out back,lol.Too much habituation to humans.

I was very lucky to work around Elk on a Christmas tree farm In high School. Owners handled the Elk every day but always did it safely. The only time they didn’t handle Elk was in Rut. Elk are big powerful beautiful animals. That size can be deadly if not respected. My favorite thing about Rut was hearing the big Males sounding off early morning. So loud high pitched squeal. Not the sound I expected lol. I’ll never forget those few years being around them.

Once upon a time, I lived about an hour east of Estes Park and we'd go up that way on the weekends. One of the cool things we saw there was a herd of elk swimming in a lake. Leave the elk alone, dude.

I once had a bison bull approach me and my friend when we visited Yellowstone back in 01. We respected the animals space and kept our distance, and after a while the bison walked off. I was in Yellowstone on one of the trails. Walked up a steep hill and came up to a huge group and a massive male. We were way to close for comfort and my heart jumped. We backed away and hurried off with no issues thankfully. Sometimes gets close and best not to panic.

It was about a couple of meters from us. He was just merely curious of us and came in a little too close for comfort to have a quick gander. We didn't want to startle it so we just stayed still until it lost interest and walked off. Really cool experience but not as cool as seeing this massive griz eating an elk across the bank of a small river. It was so close to us that Park Rangers were there to monitor the situation and make sure that the spectators respected the bears space. Yellowstone is such an amazing place. You should visit it sometime.

When I went to Yellowstone (many years ago) there were elk just hanging out all around the cabins/camping area we were at. Never tried getting too close, but it seemed like they'd let you walk right up to them. One day we were hiking and a baby moose popped out of the brush right in front of us. My dad said "that's a baby moose... Where's the mom?" and then we all ran away.

The Elk will not be put down for this, but the tourist will be. Justice for ridding stupidity.

Imagine getting gored and still having to face legal charges. 😂😂😂

Maybe in school we should teach things like: "What LARGE Wild Animal Means" and "How to be Respectful of Other's Space".

She said the elk wouldn't be put down and that's good maybe the man should be punished with jail or a severe fine! These people remind me of the people who stormed our nation's capital last Wednesday and have caused a lot of money to be spent on extra security plus the loss of life of five people!Writing this in January of 2021!

@@angelajohnson6659 I wouldn’t punish the man too much. He swung and he missed. We bond and get close with nature all the time. Just know when you’re too close or unwanted. I got bout that close as a kid and they didn’t care.

They hesitate to put down "domestic" dogs for maiming & killing persons, why would you "put down" an animal protecting themselves in their own habitat? That's like punishing a homeowner for fighting off an intruder🤔 We live in a backwards world.

Thank God the elk is okay.

This was just pure stupidity. They're aggressive during their mating season. Even tourists should know that. In a setting like that, they have no reason to fear humans.

If he had been killed it would have been his own fault, but no doubt the innocent animal would have lost it's life, all because a human was stupid.

i live near an elk farm where you can go look at them through a fence. remember one time when i was younger a bull kept charging the fence trying to attack us. it was pretty terrifying, definitely gave me a healthy fear of elk

I love how the ranger's demeanor is like "Stupid ass got what he deserved" In Tahoe I saw kids throwing pinecones at a bear in a dumpster. One of the kids stopped next to the dumpster to act tough, without realizing the bear had jumped onto the edge of the bin and was staring down at the kid. When the kid turned around he screamed😂

If that were my kid he would face serious consequences from his mom. People learn to respect animals at a young age, and that depends on the parents.

I love Estes Park.. it’s incredibly beautiful ! And hiking through the trails, I’ve certainly had close encounters with Elk but I take it seriously to respect their space and I’m so glad the park rangers are holding the person accountable and not bringing harm to the animal who was acting on instinct.. these are beautiful creatures and can still be admired from a distance.
