Man Finds Complete WW2 Air Raid Shelter Beneath His Luton Driveway

A homeowner has found an unusual 'man cave' under his driveway - a World War II air raid shelter. Simon Marks, 37, thought he had driven onto flowerbed when the wheel of his black Vauxhall Zafira got stuck in a hole outside his home. But when he got out he found that part of the driveway of his £400,000 four-bed detached house had caved in. He looked closer and realised a two-roomed shelter was lying under the driveway of the property in Luton, Beds.

We just found one in our back garden in Felpham West Sussex on the coast. Removed a shed to do decking, leveling soil then friends leg disappeared. Measured it at around 8 ft deep. Had old camp beds in there. Perfectly pointed brick walls, thick concrete roof. Ive been told by a senior citizen that some of these bunkers get confused as bomb shelters but were for British resistance in the event of german invasion.

The British Resistance volunteers were a profoundly kept secret. In fact, so secret that if you were accepted as a volunteer you had to swear an oath to King and Country that should any member of your family or friends discover anything of it and your association to it, they were immediately marked for assassination by a cell member. Each "resistance" unit comprised of around half a dozen personnel and no unit knew of any other unit; thus every unit thought they were the only unit. Life expectancy of any activated unit following a German invasion was just two weeks. Cells were intended to be more obstructive than resistant; each member trained in explosives, ordnance, electronics, communications and gainful or disruptive subterfuge, to introduce mayhem amongst the invaders and/or British civil, military or governmental collaborators who sought to gain reward for their assisting the invaders. As every unit was oblivious of the geographical whereabouts or members of other units, it ensured each and every resistance unit was a cell and not a link in a network chain. I don't believe any contemporary written records were ever kept about any unit (cell). The details of every cell's activities were and are still and will be forever (?) unknown. As signatories, sworn to everlasting silence by the Official Secrets Act and an inimitably insane patriotism, many of those unofficially created and obfuscated cell members have since died. Each living a life aside those people closest to them never knowing a thing about their, thankfully, unnecessary wartime roles.

I have a similar one in Liverpool but a lot small (6' long x 6' high x 5'wide). A bit claustrophobic. My Dad used it as a coal store up to 1967. The 4 inch concrete roof is level with the ground and has a flight of brick steps down to it. It's very damp as rainwater and groundwater seeps in. I think it was built with the house in 1934 as war was looming. The nearest bomb fell 400 yds away but killed 3 in a semi. (3,000+ died in the bombing in Merseyside August 1940 to January 1942, then nothing).

Yes, and they can store their favourite wine there. - Blue Nun. Perhaps with the dampness and 12 degrees Temperature, the label will return to its original intended colour which apparantly went wrong in the label printing process. Hence its name. Can't recall what the original colour was meant to be.

A good friend in Honolulu -- former mayor of the city, actually -- has an old air raid shelter in front of his house. It is sort of built into the ground -- you walk into it, and it has two entrances. It was clearly not meant to survive a direct hit, but the house is in an expensive neighborhood in Honolulu, so they probably only worried about -- well not much, except the possibility that a bomb might fall within a few hundred feet of their house.

Now 2018... So, how far has the Luton guy got with unearthing what looks like a Cold War nuclear bunker. It's very elaborate for a privately built WWII shelter. Some research into the house freeholder during the 39-45 years may reveal an important Civil Servant was in residency and the shelter built at the expense of tax payers. Being constructed in the front garden may suggest it was built at a time when people were far less socially paranoid. If someone openly built a bomb/fallout shelter in their front garden today I wouldn't fancy their chances against a desperate mob trying to break in as the ICBM's coarse toward their borough ward. Still, a fascinating discovery...just wish there was a conclusion to the story behind the bunker.
