Man Builds Gooseneck Tiny House After Life-Changing Accident
Throwback to a few years ago when we met Richard Ward, a designer, artist, and DIY tiny house dweller. He shared with us his powerful story of life transformation after a near-fatal motorcycle accident. This inspired him to reprioritize his life around his passions, quit his office job, and build a tiny house on wheels.❤️
He designed a truly clever small space, with home office space, and built it with an impressive number of salvaged and reclaimed materials. 🍻 It's an ideal bachelor pad with efficient storage for bikes & beer-- 3 bicycles and 2 beer taps. 🚴🚴🚴

Recently Richard finished hiking 2650+ miles on the Pacific Crest Trail. All of his travels and builds have been funded by working as a digital nomad.
And now he just bought land in Cochise County, Arizona to create an off-grid homestead.
👉Richard put out a call-to-action to the tiny living community to help protect his land-use rights:
"Please consider signing the petition (and more importantly sharing it with others) to keep the Owner-Builder opt-out in Cochise County, Arizona. Cochise county because of this permitting opt-out is THE ONE, affordable, beautiful, sustainable, haven for tiny house dwellers to own land and live their life legally that I have found in this country... In Cochise County, land can easily be found for under $1000/acre... Property taxes on my 24 acres are less than $200/year... the area is beautiful, we have an awesome unspoiled hip town 20 minutes away... it is perfect and It would be a real set back to the movement to let a place like this go because the current sitting county board is all major real estate developers who don't want people to have the freedom to build their own homes...

There’s literally nothing wrong with loving your tiny home or having an emotional connection to an inanimate object. I prefer people who have that ability to bond to something that cannot reciprocate. I think perhaps the confusion is thinking that mentality equals not being materialistic. It does not.
I'm in love with the walk up bed and sleeping area. That's what I'd like in a tiny house, I"m too claustrophobic for the loft thing

I really adored this tiny house bc it reflected the owner. It was not sterile, but had a beautiful painting, bikes hanging from the ceiling and such an easy way to bring them down. It is simple yet revealing. Hats off to you, great job.

Iv worked in health care in a hospital setting in the Scottish Highlands for 20years, so I have seen a lot of people with similar injuries as mentioned. Yes almost dying in a motor vehicle collision also transformed me into a cyclist AND changed my life in a huge way. Kudos to him for recognizing the 'message' or 'warning' and going through that difficult and frightening process of reprioritizing and adapting.
This young man is very smart, personable and clearly helpful so he gets friendship from his ex co worker in return. I really hope he is successful with his new venture. Thanks for sharing this guys.

I built a house with my husband 4 years ago, since then I have wanted to quit my job, but I’m afraid for the future, I feel like I need to save a ton of money in order to secure my future. But this man experience showed me that live is short, you never know what is going to happen to you. I need to start living the present moment and enjoy my blessings.

When you pulled down that projector screen, I stood up to give you a standing O. I am interested in a tiny house, but I never see a single build where people have anything but 12 inch joke tvs and a set of computer speakers. I have been researching tiny houses for the past year. This is one of my absolute favorites. I love his ideas, like the projector screen and the way he built his loft bed. Also the pull-up system for hanging his bikes is brilliant. But more than that I was inspired by his story, his perseverance and his sweet outlook on life.

I just revisited this tour and was reminded how lovely this build is. I hope the owner is enjoying his space and making the most of life. It was a harsh way to discover what's important in life and I'm just glad he survived to go live it.
I've wondered if SIPs would work well for a tiny house. Glad to see someone using them. That also answers the question as to why there's surface mounted electrical boxes and conduit. Was plumbing installed the same way? The fewer cuts into the SIP, the better the thermal break. Nice build!

You can order SIPS with electrical in the walls. Looks like he chose to not do that. Or maybe didn't have all locations mapped out in advance.
