    I've been able to hear faint voices piping up in the background throughout these recordings. I wonder if there were many other men recording books aloud contemporaneously.

    +Alex Mann It’s from a cassette recording. What you are hearing is the narrator’s voice but backwards from the other side of the tape. It happened when the playback head was not correctly aligned with the tape, so that the lower track on the tape was faintly picked up by the head and made audible in the gaps.
