Mama Squirrel Rescues Baby

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Hannah's baby boy falls to the driveway, and Hannah spends an hour trying to get it back up to the nest. Notes: Yes, I added the grill, because Hannah was doing a trapeze swing from the roof. When a baby left it could never get back in. Their nest is located in the roof soffit... with no access to insulation, wiring, or the attic. After this video I also added a back grill so they would not fall getting back in, like this one did, and like Hannah almost does at 6:17. This all became very useful just recently when an owl tried to grab a baby, and was blocked by the grill work. Hannah moved out for the summer of 2017 and showed back up last week, and found that her daughter from 2015 had claimed the roof and has two babies already in there.

When he was clinging to her head and she couldn't see to make the jump, I was dying laughing, and again when he was clinging for dear life to the deck railing, squirming out of being carried. So adorable. I'm so glad you recorded the whole ordeal. It was fascinating to watch.

amzing video. God bless you! i live in an apartment in NY and saw a mamma squirrel try to get one of her babies to jump from a rail onto a window, which was about 5 feet away, and then onto the fire escape to go up to the nest she built on the fire escape. i watched this sweet little baby try to jump several times after mamma coaxed him/her a zillion times!!!! the baby jumped and once fell right on the concrete steps below the fire escape. i averted my eyes...thought i was gonna die, because the poor thing fell about 8 feet down, but she/he made it. she/he was very very scared to jump onto the window again...but she did it..hung onto the brick walls as much as she could but then let go. I must say the mamma was Extremely patient in all of this. she came down several times during the day... it took ALL day for her to get the baby to jump to the window then to the fire escape, and then up the stairs to the nest. i cried at times watching this. if only "some" people are as caring as squirrels with their young!!! blessings to you and yours

Sounds like you have some more building to do! A Squirrel "Condo" in the works, maybe? :-) I'm thinking of building one next summer, so I can keep a better eye on them. Gets pretty cold up here in upstate New York,....don't ya know, so I'm thinking if I insulate it it well on the outside, I might try to have a small amount of my forced hot air heat get vented into the "Condo" :-) not a lot mind you, but on 15 degree F to below zero nights just enough to comfy it up a bit. The 12-15 squirrels in my backyard already get spoiled rotten, with pecan halves, almonds, green delicious apple pieces, carrots, snap peas, green beans, green peppers, broccoli, and other assorted fruits and treats from time to time. 3-4 of the squirrels will take the pecans (especially) from my hand, and one will stay to stuff his mouth with a second pecan!

That was an amazing video. I just raised and released a little boy squirrel , Greyfur , early in May. He is in our woods and for the first 3 months I was still his "mama". He matured and he traded me out for a girl squirrel. I have a trail cam set up and see him every day. He has a girl now, Goldie, and I think she has babies. I just love watching them. I was the first thing Greyfur saw when he opened his eyes the day after he fell out of his nest at our barn. I became quite attached to the little guy with the round the clock feedings and his antics in our bathroom. One thing I learned about little baby squirrels...they love to whittle down anything they can clamp their teeth on LOL. I am happy to hear that you made some safety adjustments to the little nesting area. Also, I didn't know that little baby squirrels were called kittens...Keep the videos coming.

Thank you for posting this video. I had no idea that momma squirrels were this caring for their offspring. Very touching to see her work so hard to save her baby. I know she must have been frustrated at some point (what mother hasn't been) when he latched on to four different branches. Then, she cuts away the branches. How clever is that? Awesome!

This is hilarious in so many ways: How she hangs from her rear legs with baby in mouth. How the baby is shocked after it fell and refuses to go near a similar situation again (very human). How the mom finally cuts away the branches (LOL!). And the master squirrel skills of doing that long leap with such a heavy payload in her mouth! Amazing! I once saved a baby squirrel. It was one of the cutest things ever! A friend raised it. I saw the squirrel months later, and it IMMEDIATELY recognized me and jumped on me and climbed up my back! 😍

I agree they are smart. In fact National Geographic rates them as more intelligent than cats. But... I have always seen them search for babies even when they found them all. Returning repeatedly to the container the babies were placed in checking to see if there are anymore. They also will take other squirrel's babies homes if they find one and have some at home.
