    For those who may not know, Vicki Lawrence could sing in real life and had a number one hit with "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" which was written by songwriter-singer Bobby Russell whom she was married to at the time. I love how she does this in her character as Mama. Thank you for posting this gem!

    Mama got robbed of being Grandma USA there. They asked her how old she was and she told them it was none of their damned business. People probably forgot that Thelma was played a woman in her thirties who had a #1 hit song previously and could sing just about anything. I love Mama's Family.

    Vicki Lawrence is just so good, I love her! She should've stuck it out longer in this show, she was already gonna be forever typecast , might as well milk it all the way. Then again, she was only in her 30's. Anyway, nice chat self!

    She didn't quit. Telepictures only signed her to a 95 episode direct to first-run syndication contract. Once those 95 episodes were taped, they had all they needed. Especially after they acquired the syndication rights to the episodes of the NBC version.

    I know this might be looking too deep but, wouldn't this be completely inappropriate for her to have performed this number at a bar for her father's friends at the Jigger when she was a little girl? Just sayin, I love this show to pieces but they definitely had a lot of rather unusual sketchy back stories and symbolism. It's coming out of Hollywood after all, what can be expected?

    I think you're reading to much into it,my nana would have been about the age vicki portrayed here and she was helping to raise 5 kids smoking and working a full time job by the age of 13. That was a very different era

  • @OneLoveRSR

    @OneLoveRSR

    3 жыл бұрын

    You're looking way too deep. This was taped in the mid 1980s which means Thelma Harper (nee Crowley) was in her mid 60s. So that means that her backstory of singing this song took place in a rural midwestern bar in the early 1930s. Considering the fact that not only was it the Depression era, there was also misogyny, racial segregation and unfair child labor practices during that time... a little girl singing this song in a saloon is right in alignment with that era. Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.
