Malta Travel Guide

Malta is the quintessential Mediterranean culture made up of every major maritime power that has sailed that sea. Each leaving behind a mark; some larger, some smaller. In a tiny, dense urban sprawl carved into thick limestone, Malta reveals itself as a strategic David amongst the sea’s Goliaths.

I must address this: this is how I felt and saw Malta. I don’t live there. My goal was to talk about a few aspects of Maltese culture, not try and find what’s horrible about the country. To all of you who keep commenting about the lack of shots with cranes: I’m from Miami. I’m immune to this since my city grows at a rapid pace. Cranes equal development and I address that issue in the interview with Mr. Spiteri. Also, since I see them everywhere in my city, they become an afterthought, so why would I take a shot of an ugly crane I barely notice? It's easy to nitpick when you're a local; you live and breath your city/country's problems every day. How can you expect a guy who comes for a few days to truly see what you see unless it's blatantly apparent like say Detroit? I've seen a lot of fluff travel vloggers that go around posting videos with mindless drone shots, tropical house music and who walk around on selfie-cam mode blabbering no knowledge or even an attempt to understand Malta, yet ironically, they don't get this spew of negative comments. Yet here I am interviewing Maltese people and trying to learn the culture and I get a bunch of self-hating Maltese commenting that this isn't real. I strongly believe that disliking a video because it doesn’t depict YOUR lifestyle and ignoring the effort in producing this episode and trying to emulate the experience of the country in my eyes, falls under the category of trolling. If your experience or life in Malta sucks and you hate your country, make an episode about that and talk about cranes and dead birds, but quit hating and telling me this is all fluff because I’m just showing the Malta I know to the world.

You seem to have missed the point totally. You are not getting to know the Maltese people or the culture. You are promoting the good things and points about it only so saying you are trying to get to know the culture and people is a bit of a lie. Either its a holiday promotion video which is what it looks like or it is a video trying to get to know the actually island, culture and people. Cannot be both.

@@mradamcass Ironically, you missed the point. I'm not "promoting" anything here; wrong channel. What I do is discover a place and talk to locals about it to broadcast that to KZread. If I wanted to promote something, I would gush over things and say how awesome everything is; something that isn't done in this episode. I ask questions and try to learn as best I can about what makes a place tick, this is why I bother to interview a chef and ask about Maltese cuisine's past, present and future. This is why I sat down with Paul and discuss development, rents, football, etc.

Mitchell, you should ignore those comments and not engage at all. You are doing yt videos on a channel and the more the viewers the more the people who don't agree with something or don't like something. It seems some people don't understand what a "travel" video is. I am Sicilian, never been to Malta and your video gave me a good glance on what to expect if I decide to go to visit Malta.

It's paradise on earth for me. I've visited twice and can't wait to return. Watching this nearly brings me to tears. From the architecture, especially all the old churches, the small towns, the scenery, the food, and the cultural activities, the history, the tours, and most importantly the people. If I won the lottery, I'd move straight to Malta. It's my favourite place in the world.

This is beautifully made but it is also cherry picking at it's most extreme and I understand that you wouldn't know what it's like to live daily in Malta. We don't have the best of beaches and most of the summer they are crowded, but we do have sand less bays that are not as easily accessible that are very good, such as Kalanka & Xrobb l-ghagin (In the south near Marsaxlokk) , Dar il-fekruna (Up north by Mellieha), asking diving schools would probably get you another couple names. We don't have a countryside to walk in, as it's mostly privately owned for fields, and even if you do fancy a walk between the dogs that are left to guard the fields who can easily get out and harass you, the possible of lead raining on you from illegal hunting and quarry trucks driving down the narrow roads make it a bothersome experience. Traffic is worse in summer due to the heat, but you can avoid a lot of it if you don't travel at around 7-8am and 5-6pm which are the rush hours were workers get off work and delivery trucks do their deliveries. Also places such as St Julians, Pace Ville, Hamrun and Gzira are always slow. The heat is no joke, try to avoid being outside between 12.30pm - 2.30pm (June, July, August) and wear sunscreen unless you want to end up like a lobster. Traveling by Bus especially in the north is very problematic in summer, taking the bus extra early will save you a lot of waiting. Unemployment is low it's true, but the minimum wage is not a livable wage. Construction site galore, The constant noise, dust and unpleasantness that come with it. Pastizzi are life, ricotta and peas are the classic but you should also try Imqaret, they are dough wrapped around dates and fried, or a maltese ftira (bread). Also don't be afraid to ask, most of the time people will help you, sometimes even go out of their way to make sure you get where you want or what you want.

Well done Mitchell. I left Malta years ago but go back very frequently. I get a huge lump in my throat every time the plane takes off when I leave. This Pandemic has kept me away for too long and your video isn’t helping, (sigh) Again, well done. Enjoyed every second of it.

Hi Mitchell, I take it you want your viewers to stop and smell the local aromas of each place you visit. What each takes away from it is the open book of illustrating your footage. 🤩
