malls are being DEMOLISHED in California

Ойын-сауық

Tanforan is a shopping mall in San Bruno, California. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula, 10 miles south of San Francisco
The site was originally used as a horse racing track from 1899 until 1964, A shopping mall was built on the site and opened in 1971. In 2022, Alexandria Real Estate completed its acquisition of the site and announced the mall would be demolished and replaced with a biotech campus
Today only a handful of stores remain open to little to none foot traffic, the malls are DONE as consumers transition to online shopping
in this video I will be exploring this DOOMED mall to witness “The END of malls”

It's sad to me. Like memories of a different life playing back. I can't watch one of these without seeing the crowds of people appear like ghosts walking and running through. Kids pointing at toys in the windows, teens laughing, the sound of packages and bags rustling. Couples holding hands and walking slowly. Joy. It makes me feel like the 70's and 80's world I grew up in was on a different planet that no longer exists.

Malls used to be where well-to-do people went or middle class went to be around well-to-do people and friends, before the USA had so much poverty, nobody wants to go to a public enclosed space full of thugs and illegal immigrants gang members and potential crime... that's the problem... but the malls were the center point in the American life-style and were attached with the collapsing society on purpose. This is not by mistake... This is why outdoor malls are doing better because well-to-do people can go in and go out and not have to spend time around gang members and be potential stalking and crime targets like they would in a mall. Sad.

In the 90's malls in L.A. like Westside Pavilion where they filmed the Tom Petty Free Fallin video, and Sherman Oaks Galleria which started the Valley Girl trend had already begun dying. The heyday for malls was before Amazon and Walmart took over.

even with low rent you have to get a lot of shoppers to go there and buy stuff. As per another comment people like shopping online and don't even go to the movies which malls used to have. Maybe additional attractions, game venues, concert venues, ice rinks like Mall of America.... but only if the local demographics will support it. Sometimes stuff just becomes economically obsolete. Appreciate the video documentation. Might be interesting to get comments from locals... oh wait... there's no one there.

So crushingly depressing listening to The Motels "Suddenly, Last Summer" in the background. Takes me right back to the 80's when I used to frequent Tanforan, Stonestown and Serramonte. And all the hangouts I grew up with: Castle Golf and Games/Malibu Grand Prix, the Cliff House, B Dalton Bookseller, Waldenbooks, Waldensoftware, Toys R Us, Tower Records, the Coronet, the Alexandria, PIzza and Pipes, Farrell's, Steinhart Aquarium - all are rubble or unrecognizable today. Even being able to hang out at SFO in the parking lot by runway 1-right is long gone with 911. And the last nail in the coffin will be Great America closing. The S.F. Bay Area is truly dead to me.

The Mall experience was expensive for a retailer (rent and %sales commission). OTOH a huge warehouse cost pennies when compared. Never visited that Mall. I remember when they built Sunnyvale Town center...The replaced it a few decades later. Valco ...Gone. Loss of major 'Anchor' stores hurt, but no adjustment on the terms retailers paid the owners for their space made it less viable.

I recently went on a trip to Guatemala, one of the poorer countries in Central America and I was surprised to visit not one but two beautiful, modern shopping malls that were busy during the middle of the week and filled with employees! There was a even a man whose job it was too sweep and polish the escalator steps and hand rails. There were people working everywhere (not just in the mall) and it wasn't hard to get quick and courteous service at fast food restaurants and in the stores. Since I've been back here in the U.S, the Panera Bread restaurant I go to has been closed three times due to staffing and product shortages and there's more examples I can give but this comment would turn into a novel...
