Malinois Dog Breed Research
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
When I started researching the Malinois I was shocked by the little information out there. Just bite work and aggression. Just ridiculous. This breed offers so much more and the whole world is missing out! I’m going to show everything they won’t!

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this! I have a 1-year-old Malinois and get so tired of hearing people say "Malinois should not be pets". They require a lot of attention and training but are so capable, as you said. It's very rewarding building a relationship with them due to their intense engagement. I love the breed and am so glad to have found your channel! xoxo

I work in K9 Search and Rescue and a former cop and with a Malinois & Shepherd rescue, Malinois are great, they have issues like all breeds but they are NOT as unhinged as most make them out to be, mine has a off switch and in some ways is less wound up than my German Shepherd. The big issue I see is separation anxiety, they need to be crate trained or some may eat your house, mine did as a young dog but he grew out of it and now I do not need the crate. I also see many that are fairly dominant dogs and they do not respond to weak willed owners but they are super loving loyal dogs.

Mine needed a crate for 2 years but now she is good when we leave. The puppy is still in the crate. I completely agree with you. We have had to crate many breeds though, that is not a malinois thing. Leave your border collie puppy out and see what happens.
So happy you put this out there and very true. Bottom line the Mal are so willing to please and can do just about anything you put them on. From bringing the sheep into a lot, to performing a wide range of tricks. I do see a few tricks/chores from your video's I need to do. In my 62 years of life I've had several breeds of dogs and I would have to say a Belgium Mal is by far my favorite. And by the way I didn't need to train him to bring the sheep in it came natural and he only does it when asked. Best lap dog ever. Awesome content, keep it up and thank you very much.
This is exactly how I feel! They are farm dogs. I garden for 3 seasons and that is they’re favorite time. We are outside for hours and they are right by me. We train almost every day for 10 minutes at least. We do bite sleeve play time. They go for walks with my kids because they’re trained. They cuddle for hours on the couch too. They are my besties and the best family dogs we’ve ever had.
I work with Malinois at my job with personal protection dog (family protection dog company) and, in my experience, they all have different personalities and are equally wonderful. If you have the time to put in with them, you will get something great back from them in spades. Definitely one of my favorite breeds.
Really enjoy watching your videos. I'm raising my two Mals much the same way as you. I've been quoted between $100-600 per hour for training. Not realistic!!! I've had smart dogs before but they are amazing. They have analytical skills and develope their own tasks. Mine really try to communicate back. Always help oriented. Just amazing. Keep up the good work. 👍

Nice video, you are absolutely right! Most videos on KZread are going to make it seem like you have to be an Olympian in order to own a Malinois. I just turned 61 years old and bought me a Belgian Malinois and I love him. He’s only 5 months old now and he does come from a working line, and I must admit, he’s one of the most energetic dogs I’ve ever owned. But, like you mentioned in your video, you have to be willing to put in the work! Ultimately I thing Django is going to be one of the best dogs I’ve ever owned. 😊
I have 6 German shepherds and a malinois. The mal is the most loving of the bunch!
Thanks so much for this video. Our 2 years young malinois is exactly as you present it. He‘s velcro, but also very easy to handle when it comes to integrate him in our every-day life and activities. The best dog we‘ve ever had. But: Only possible because we have the time available for him!

Agreed!! It is the TIME element that makes the difference.
So nice to see your side. I think the internet image is not that maligators are hard to train, they are hard to live with if you can't handle the time and focus required. Which you cover. I do think there are better compromises in breeds for most families/people. That said, thank you for helping with the misconceptions KZread posters has helped develop. They can be such awesome pups! You've obviously done a fantastic job!

My favorite part about Malinois videos is that the YT cc algorithm always transcribes it as "melon wall"
Our family dog belgain malinois Nala passed away 2 days ago battling a fungal infection for 3 months called Blastomycosis 😔. This disease is now spreading rapidly here in the Midwest. Nala loved the outdoors so much in which is how she caught the disease. She was the most smart and gentle animal we have ever had and will be looking to get another malinois in the future. Just wanted to post this so everyone can educate themselves on this fungal infection. It's very difficult to diagnose and super expensive to treat.

So very sorry for your loss, my daughter lost her German Shepherd on Monday last week, got sick and passed in under 24 hours, they think it was some kind of infection but still waiting on full report, he was sent to the university vet school for a necropsy.
i was actually wary of receiving a (sort of a rescue) malinois recently thinking of how it'll be a real challenge to integrate her into our family. turns out she just wants to be touched all the time and spend time w/ her humans. sure she's energetic but not more than her same age husky sister nor my lab when she was a pup too. truth is , our husky is presenting more of a challenge than our mallinator.

I agree…. Our old husky mix (R.I.P) was such a handful…. For 12 years 😂. Sure miss her though.
Thank you so much!! I am getting a malinois and I am excited but you're so right! The internet tells you not to own one. They are scary, bitey, and will only wear you out. Thank you for this video.
Great video! People that think mals are only for working or protection are missing out on the best dogs in the world! I love my goofy snuggly land sharks!
I just adore your dogs thank you so much
I LOVE your video! We adopted a 3 month old puppy listed as a black GSD, but have had three people independently tell us she may be a Mal. We took her to a basic Puppy training class and she stole the show every time, so much enthusiasm and energy! She's not 7 months old and the jumping and biting is more than our previous Dutch Shepherd ever did, or we can figure out without professional training, so having her evaluated this Saturday. But after her 2 mile walk in the park, she becomes like a cat and lays around like you show in your video. I'm so glad you show that side of them, how incredibly sweet and loving they can be too! But they are definitely NOT a "starter dog" for first timers!!
You hit the nail on the head. I love mals. But would never get one based on the information given by the interweb . You’ve done an excellent job showing what it’s really like Love from Scotland 🏴
I come home yesterday to find my 14week malinois had decided to do some redecorating… they are nuts but they are so intelligent it’s incredible. For me they also the best guard dog. Like the lady says put the work in and you will be fine if u don’t.., well get ready!
The reason people fail with malinois is because people buy them thinking they are just like any other dog. And they really aren’t. They are very smart dogs, but the issue comes with the time you need to spend training with them. Most dogs you can just get them, and at most teach them to sit and maybe stay.
I did a lot of research before we purchased our Malonios.. Honestly, i was pretty nervous. But he's been a great dog. The internet makes you feel like you have to be a great Trainor to handle these guys and it's just not true. They are capable of being a family dog. They are energetic, yes. Probably not for couch potatoes. But they are hilarious and fun to be around. Thanks for sharing your life with your Mals!!!
They are awesome dogs that you have❤
yes i have spend hours and days training mine , he is such of good boy , lots of energy but thats good , took me off my confort zone .
Thank you for being real ! I suspected that these were just great dogs if you had the time and devotion to raising them ! So many fake experts and click bait on KZread!
Thank you for sharing your videos. What I learned from your channel is that Mals can be the obedient working dog when you need them to be and be big goofballs the rest of the time. What an investment of time they needed/need, but the return you get is priceless. Wishing you many wet boops.

Well said.. iv learnt everything I know online. My girl is 8 week and will sit stay go down jump.up and even spin now lol. Shes so clever but if you ignore her then she starts being mischievous.. I keep her busy and she sleeps once she's had her fun 🤷♂️ thanks too because I take a lot from your videos.
THIS! This is so true! Thank you. My girl just turned 1 year old a couple weeks ago and she is my first mal. Not my first dog, but man I second guessed my decision… up until the third night. That’s when I knew I had something special. She is THE easiest dog to train I’ve ever known, and I’ve never trained more than sit and stay. Thank goodness I got turned on to Robert Cabral and his online courses but a LOT of the credit goes to just how amazing my girl is. She makes me want to be better every day for her. Because she is really that awesome of a dog. And I thought my previous dog, female boxer, was a Velcro dog… ha not even close to my mal *Edited for spelling
I got this beautiful little 9 lb, 2 month old puppy at the shelter.. she was reddish chocolate color with green eyes.. no breed specified.... after the DNA test..she is Belgian Malinois and Australian Shepherd mix.. now 9 months old 42 lbs red sable with green eyes
I had a Mal mix with Mal personality. He was wonderful, eager to please, could sense emotions and always wanted to be near. Drove my bf insane though lol. I miss him so much (passed 2 years ago). I agree with your other video, Mals need to be worn out more mental than physical. Mine helped me around the house with everything. He sensed when my legs hurt after work and he would quickly lay how trained but otherwise he grabbed his ball for playtime. I plan to get another when my job doesn’t include so much travel.
We just got out puppy three weeks ago and she is super smart. I'm really happy I came across your channel!

True, i had several of " Mécheles Herder" real name for Malinois, and yes are easy going dogs if u exercise them enough, if u engage them psychologically and physically enough....
Dog trainers post video's about Mal's being in need of professionals to train your dogs. They say if you do not get this training your dog will be out of control. They say this because they want to make money. My dogs are well mannered and fun to be around. They are full of love, sometimes too much love LOL. They are most happy just to be around the pack. They broke things as young dogs but grew out of that in time. They are protective around strangers, cannot fix they it is just the breed. If you love and play with your dogs they will turn out fine.

You by far have the best Malinois channel. I will be getting a male puppy soon to replace my male that only made it to 9 before succumbing to bad genetics. His sister just had her acl replaced and will be 10 in march. Obviously, not every Mal is a nut. The one thing they all share in my experience is high intelligence. Yes, they are mouthy but consistent training and daily exercise is the key. I am torn between getting a puppy from a breeder and rescuing one from a shelter. I will do my best to save a life if I can find a diamond in the rough.

I absolutely love your channel. Thank you for sharing the true day to day life with these big teddy bears. There is so much more to Mals than the extreme stuff of the internet/tv/movies. My sweet, young boy looks like your Whiskey and is a goofy, snuggly wild ass who loves to play, learn and help me with literally everything. Adjusting to the city was very overstimulating for him and nearly all of the “serious K9” trainers I’ve worked with continued to demonize him despite knowing he grew up in the middle of 26,000 acres of nothing. Yes 26,000! And that all of the super scared “problem” small dogs wanted to be his best friend. Especially in class settings, they would use my dog as their DANGEROUS example, yelling at me but not offering real training. (This is not my first large breed or shepherd but my first dog with extreme culture shock!) Thank you for letting people see how amazing they are in a family with consistency and love!
They are called maligators for a reason... LOL!!

True! Stereotypes are hard to go'. I love the way you exemplify your views. You are convincing. i do know an elderdy couple who got a berger malinois and they can't cope unfortunately. It is not the dog's fault, they should have picked another breed. Still the dog loves them
This is good to hear. I am considering getting one soon and had been for many years because I want an intelligent dog. I had a black lab for 13 years and she was everything you could want in a dog. She recently passed which is why I'm wanting a dog now. I think these will fit in fine with my family. I have pretty much disregarded what I hear online.

I was given a puppy about a year ago. I was told she was husky and shepherd. I am positive she is not either of those. I used to raise Alaskan Malamutes. We showed and weight pulled them. I believe the dog I now have is a belgian malinois. I would love to know more on how to train them. Any advice would be much appreciated. She has some serious separation anxiety and my home is paying for it. Thanks for what you do. I am grateful.

So so true, that said, imho, is the part where you said that you work your dogs every day. If I do not work my dog every day, mentally and physically, she is not a calm, relaxed family dog..instead she is pestering everyone with her ball, acting anxious and hyper etc. so I have to take her out to play ball even if it’s dark. The lack of light forces her to find that ball which is the mental challenge 😂😂😂
You tell them girl!☺️
Please do a video about position changes and obedience
I have a dog that has a small amount of belgian malinois he is fun, but a lot of work
There's a trainer who is so anyoing by saying that it's a extreme dog and pls don't have one as a pet 🤯

Who is at the beginning of the video, the character "liquid metal" from the movie terminator? lol looks really cool
Great video))) Thank you))
Thanks for the video. I really like the Mal breed, however, i am concerned about getting one due to the research on line. I have a Labrador that i have paid for professional training and a lot of time i have put in in training him. I am proud to say he is 2o months old and has passed his therapy dog training and is official registered as a therapy dog. When he has is harness on he is working but when he doesnt he plays so well with anyone or anything even wanting to play chase with a frog. Unfortunately the frog didnt know how to chase him. I would like a female Mal so my dog Teddy could have another play mate at home. I have been thinking maybe in a few years when i retire. I love a well trained dog Teddy is great for my mental health and exercise as well.. I have just had a second knee replacement about 4 weeks ago so i am worried with all the internet stuff. Teddy comes to work with me as i work in a high school the kids love him and he loves his work.
Would love to hear how you manage the front door. That's the one problem we are having with our 1-year-old... he jumps up on people and gets very wound up. It seems like overly nervous/excited energy to me. I was trying to use a leash at the front door, but it seems like that adds to the conflict. Wondering if a solid place command would work? I prefer not to "put him away" when people come over. Would love to hear your advice!!!
@neucounty
Жыл бұрын
Sounds like a nice “Place” command is the perfect idea! I would put the “Place” somewhere the dog can see the front door. I find that helps show them they are not missing out on anything. I would also use a bed or mat or something to signify that “place” It will take time but it sounds to me like your ready to take it on! Another thing I would suggest is NO VISITOR should acknowledge The Dog until it is calm, collective, and not looking for attention. If he gets excited once you acknowledge stop and start over. Patience and consistency is key. I find the hardest part is actually the visitors who don’t listen to what I need them to do. Thanks For Watching!!

@@neucounty And good point regarding training the visitors to ignore until the dog is calm!
Hello from Texas! Just found your channel and it is great. I have an eight year old (@70lbs) and have a question that I have never been able to get a straight answer about. For at least the last five to six years I have fed my boy a mixed kibble/raw diet. It works to keep his weight down as he is not as active as he was during his formative years. He gets a cup of kibble with an egg in the AM and approx 2 1/2-3 Lbs of mixed meat-veggies-fruit with another cup of kibble in the PM. No health problems noted by the vet thus far so we have been sticking with it. What do you feed a 100lb Mal?
@neucounty
Жыл бұрын
To me it sounds like you don’t need a straight answer or an answer at all. What your feeding sounds perfect. Plus the vet gives a all clear check. Nobody knows their dog better then the owner. So really nobody can give you a straight answer because well….. every single dog is different. From what the stomach can handle, to how much exercise, to age, to lifestyle…. So many things can play a role in what and how much each dog should be eating. Now this is my own personal opinion and I’m no veterinarian. However 8 years old, clean bill of health, who cares what anyone else thinks….. your doing a GREAT JOB! I feed my 100pound Malinois the same as you. A Great mix of….. little this, little that, with kibble. Thanks for watching, cool to have people from other states joining.

@@neucounty Yeah i would just get the "side eye" when I mention raw food. He only gets kibble mixed in now because the transition period between the two types of food is brutal. If we had to pick up and go because of a natural disaster, kibble is easier, so I keep it in his diet. Mals' LOVE veggies...😁
CARNA 4 is a great dog food. Check out ingredients on line.
I don’t know what she says, because I don’t know English 😛))), but I want to listen to what she says, it’s interesting and I get aesthetic pleasure from it ))) Nice
Exactly right.
but still, what do you think, can a Malinois be the first dog? I have experience of communicating and walking with dogs in the family - Staffordshire Terrier and Bull Terrier, they were sweeties. But I have not yet had the experience of taking care of my own dog on a daily basis.

As much as I would love to answer that, I can not. Only you can! I don’t know your lifestyle. If your active. Have kids. How’s your personality. What’s your will power like. Strong work ethic. So many things the list goes on and on. Do your research and gets some hands on experience with a Malinois…. Then ask yourself if you want a Malinois and are ready for that kind of commitment. Only you can answer if your ready.

In your opinion do you think it’s possible to work full time and still own one of these, given you take time away from work when needed when they’re pups? I feel like I hear too much “you can’t own x dog if you’re working full time” which just sounds ridiculous, in reality 99% of people have to work full time to maintain their lives
In my 49 years of training I have worked with "real" Mals, and what I call "dropout Mals". The dropout Mals make some of the greatest companion dogs out there. Smart as a whip, love to train, but don't have to train 4 or 5 times a day. What I call real Mals, not so much. While they are great dogs they require a much higher time commitment than most pet dog owners can, or will, give. I am old, retired, and have a ton of experience, but I am not suited for a "real" Mal. Just think about what you are getting into, and try to be realistic about your experience and time you have to commit, and want to commit. What no one wants in the home is a board Mal. LOL
