MALE DEPRESSION: How to Identify the Signs, Symptoms and Triggers of Male Depression

The signs and symptoms of male depression often look very different from women's depression --and as a result, men often remain undiagnosed and untreated.
Do you know the most common symptoms, signs and triggers for male depression, and how to decode male expressions of depression in men?
Did you know that women more often attempt suicide, but men more often complete suicide attempts, and end their lives.
If you know or love a man who may be depressed, this is the video for you!
Typical depressive symptoms include:
www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/men-and-depression/index.shtml#pub2
More resources around men's depression:
suicidepreventionlifeline.org
What if I or someone I know is in crisis?
Men with depression are at risk for suicide. If you or someone you know is in crisis, get help quickly.
Call your doctor.
Call 911 for emergency services.
Go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
Call the toll-free, 24-hour hotline of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255); TTY: 1-800-799-4TTY (1-800-799-4889).
Veterans can call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 then press 1.
In many instances, a crisis can be avoided when friends or family members are involved in the treatment and can recognize crisis warning signs. Crisis warning signs are different for different people. One person may have more trouble sleeping and become more agitated. Another person may sleep more, stop eating, and focus on disturbing thoughts. Creating a plan that lists the loved one’s warning signs-those actions that usually occur before a crisis-and the health care provider’s contact information may help avoid a crisis.

Showing our emotions is not an option, esp not around the women in our lives. Regardless if a women will admit it or not, they treat us differently after we have become emotional around them. Society doesn't care about us, we are treated as expendable.

I have been in and out of thearpy for the past 25 years. I've seen 9 therapists only one helped. She moved away from the city. The reason why she helped me was because she was sincere in her wanting to help me. She acknowledged my depression and anxiety. I felt like I was speaking with someone that was going through the same thing with me. In some of our sessions she would just listen and take notes. She would say that she felt that I needed to be heard. When she said that I burst out in tears. God bless her. She saved my life. All the other therapists , i felt, were following the textbook. I felt a distance instead of a connection. If you want to help a person that's depressed. Listen to them, be sincere, connect with their pain. once that connection is made you've laid a solid foundation to build on. I get more help out of talking with someone that truly understands what i'm going through, and that truly cares. I've lost faith in therapist but not in therapy.

Know that you’re not alone in any of this. Going through this is completely normal and there will be a light at the end of this tunnel. Having communities like this chat room on KZread can certainly help. I’ve found it helpful to spend even just a few hours per week volunteering in areas where you could help others dealing with loneliness, etc. such as at a nursing home. Sometimes all they would love to have is someone to stop by now and then and play checkers or cards with. Hospice care also looks for volunteers to spend time with their patients just playing a game or spending time in conversation with them. You’ll find it helps relieve you of your own thoughts and feelings.

When I explained to him "I feel like I'm drowning, my mind is constantly being sucked down deeper into an everlasting darkness, and escape seems impossible. I'm in a never-ending cycle, and even waking up seems meaningless." His response was, "You obviously understand your mind, so why are you here?" First time hearing someone that understands how I feel and what I am going trough. So, I am soon to be 21 years old. I live in almost full isolation since I was 16 which means I didn't go to school since then ( I've finished it online). I did develop addiction to cannabis while isolated at home as a coping mechanism at first but later it became critical to survival as water or food. I do drink everyday but I am able to stop without suffering too much psychically. I grew up without a father and was bullied into staying at home. First video I saw on your channel was about complex ptsd and I was extremely shocked by how much I can relate to it and how much it explains so many things psychologists I've went to didn't understand or explain anything close to it. I'm not able to do anything about it in real life or talk about it anymore. I do not feel like killing myself and do not want it but sometimes you do feel desperate enough to consider it in my opinion. Without alcohol and cannabis I'd probably be way off worse since they do negate most of my feelings and make it okay being alone at home all day everyday over multiple years. I know this is not sustainable way to live but I simply can't do anything about it anymore. Thank you whoever read all of my comment. It really means a lot to me knowing that someone cares.

As one with lifelong MDD, and currently majorly struggling I wish I could ask people with a loved one who has depression *"How in the world did you get in a relationship with someone with depression‽‽"* 😯 Did you know they had depression? Did they show confidence before you dated? Did you understand what depression was before getting serious? ...It's beyond my believability that any of you were even slightly aware of how depression affects your mate before you got serious. I've lost any faith in myself as of beginning of 2022, if I ever really had confidence in myself. 😔 Then I've never had a romantic relationship, I've only had three or more dates with 3 women and I've only been able to go out with 23 total! 😣 I'm very close to giving up everything.

I've never performed better in bed than during the deepest of depression. You get into this "mode" where you're just not there anymore and you're watching yourself bang like a p*rnst*r with zero emotional feeling. You find comfort in the feeling she will never know and lose respect for you. This can temporarily mitigate the issue as well. Your partner finding out and losing respect for you amidst dark times will exacerbate the issue tenfold. It is engrained in female nature to find someone new at the first sign of weakness.

I recently started dating a guy and realized he shows signs of depression. He is angry at everything and everyone. He is lazy even though I can see he has so much potential. He was brought up by a single professional mother and he is living with her after divorcing his wife two years ago. He is white, with a kind heart but the mood swings are real. I have no idea what to do and say. I want to support him without dating him until he gets better. He needs therapy and medical intervention. But he is too depressed to do anything about it. This is a man I went on four dates with and the mood swings are a trigger for me. Although I haven't seen it yet, he definitely has reckless behaviours that are an absolute turn off. Again, I know this is depression rather than his true self. I am not so sure what to do.
