Maldives Underwater Highlights - 4k HDR

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

A handful of clips from a recent trip in December 2020 to the Maldives scuba diving around the numerous dive sites of South Ari, North Ari, North Male and Vaavu Atolls.
We dived for ten days with the Prodivers Team at Lily Beach Resort in South Ari Atoll, and also spent another ten days on the Emperor Explorer Liveaboard dive boat sailing around North Male Atoll, Vaavu Atoll, South Ari Atoll and North Ari Atoll. The weather was mid monsoon change which meant the diving conditions and visibility were challenging to get nice stable and clear content, but I think this video shows what is possible.
The footage is filmed on a Sony A7siii with Nauticam housing and WACP-1 wide angle conversion port. Camera settings were 4K 60FPS HDR HLG2, using custom white balance before every shot. Everything is shot hand held, using only the in camera IBIS and buoyancy control for stabilisation - no stabilisation has been used in post production.

Great quality and colors! I watched this video on my big screen TV in HDR and on iMac 2017 in SDR, and both versions are very good. I would say that the picture quality on the HDR TV is better, but the quality of the picture on the SDR screen is very good and is not much behind. To me, your video is a perfect confirmation of the benefits of shooting in HLG underwater. Thank you for sharing. I hope you do not mind if I share your video on my Facebook account.

Thank you very much for your positive words - I’m pleased that you’ve found the video valuable. I wanted to show incredible HLG HDR can look underwater especially with the extra colour space BT2020 can bring. It adds a whole additional depth of colour, luminance and also an authenticity (in my opinion) which captures the moments perfectly. I’ve also watched both versions (HDR and SDR) on different devices, and I’m super impressed as to how KZread does such a fantastic job of the conversion from HLG HDR to SDR automatically. Please feel free share the video 👍🏼

Nice work Daniel. About to take my A7S3 down tmrw here in Philippines with similar rig (Keldans and ambient filters), I have been shooting HLG for commercial shoots above water with great results, will try HLG tmrw as well as SLOG3 to see what works best. Looking forward to see more of your work, thanks for sharing!

Thanks Gary 🙏🏼 Good luck with your dives! I too look forward to seeing your content - and would love to hear your thoughts about both HLG vs SLOG. I found SLOG does let some more light in at the crucial 12800 ISO, but the extended BT2020 colour space with HLG outweighs the benefits (in my opinion) - simply open up the aperture a bit more to let more light in and job done ☑️ I found the -1.5B and -3.5B gel filters awkward to stick onto the back of the lens and due to the space constraints with the wacp-1 I’ve asked keldan if they can make some small red filters for the Sony SEL2870 lens front. If you’d like any info / settings, let me know - happy to share any knowledge that’s of use. Happy bubbling 🤿- have a great time! 👍🏼👌🏼

@@DanielFrench Thanks Daniel. I did my first tests yesterday, published here on KZread this morning. I was using red filter on the lens itself (72mm), which seems to work fine, I also didn't want to put those gel filters on the back. Seems to work fine. I did a few HLG tests, but need to do more of both in clear water on next weekends dive.

Awesome - I’ll go check it out now! Look forward to seeing your underwater HLG footage 😉 I’m also not keen on the gel filters. I’ve asked Keldan to see if they can make me a couple of screw on filters that are small enough for the SEL2870 lens (55mm thread) and that fit behind the WACP-1. Fingers crossed they can as that’s be great!

@@DanielFrench Thanks! I just bought X-Light M15000 with 12 Meter ambient filter. I got inspired by your Videos. Keldan is too expensive for me. But the Chinese seem to have copied them quite well.

@@buchpetzer Thank you 🙏🏼 - I'm pleased to have given you some inspiration 😊 Best of luck with the lights - the ambient light filters in combination with a red filter on the camera and custom white balance gives mind blowing results 👌🏼
