@@AlanaDunsmore tips for spicy food. You need to avoid wet dishes (unless you wanna to try it). Because that the most spiciest form of food in our country. Usual keyword of spicy is "sambal" (if you well informed you would know about this). Avoiding food by picking on another race food not gonna help you at all. Because our tolerance on spicy food is almost equal and we also cook in the spicy manner. So it unavoidable. Red faced while eating our food is common. So no worry, your tolerance would build eventually (unless you super sensitive to spicy flavour).

Most expensive is drink. Teh Ais rm4-6. That's ridiculous. Voucher is scam. Yup its more expensive because vendor need to pay 30% commission from all the sales they made to foodpanda for using their platform , if the food price in actual shop cost RM7 the price in apps is RM10 , so they need to increase the price for not take a lost .

I'm a Malaysian Malay who can't handle spicy food and certain spices...I would say some of the few Malay foods that either isn't spicy or the sambal/spicy sauce is added separately (in my experience anyway is) that I can remember off the top of my head; -Anything with the word "masak kicap" which basically means cooked in/with soy sauce so "Ayam masak kicap" would be chicken cooked in soy sauce or "Daging masak kicap" would be beef cooked in soy sauce This dish is rarely spicy and if it is it's usually bearable and is typically eaten with white rice -Laksam, a noodle dish with a thick fish based broth/stock... I usually get one to go so in my case the sambal/spicy sauce is put in a separate packet and I just don't add it in, I'm not sure how the laksam would be served if you ate it at the shop though -Sup gearbox It's basically usually beef broth with a big chunk of beef bone(that still has meat on it kinda like a beef/lamb shank?) served in it. It's served with a straw so you can suck the bone marrow out (the best part) -Basically anything with the word "sup" like "bihun sup" which is rice vermicelli in broth Also sup is just pronounced as soup -Most "kuih-muih" ,kuih-muih is basically a category of Malaysian desserts which are kind of like teatime sweets/treats, there's lots of different types from those that are more like cakes to those that have a resemblance to jelly/jello and those that are fried (some fried ones are a tad spicy like karipap/curry puff so do be careful!)

Your reply was very helpful. Thank you! Like Alana, I love experiencing the foods of all the Asian cultures, but I cannot tolerate hot spicy foods. I pasted your suggestions into my doc of Malaysian foods for my first trip there next year. Are there any regional food types that are usually spicy and other regions that are, so I can look out for the non-spicy regional names? For example, Peranakan or Nyonya cuisine.

The best non spicy food that u can eat is Chinese food. The chilis or sambal is served separately or u can tell them not to add chilis to the dish. If u don't meet up with any Chinese, u can ask your Malay friends to bring u to a halal Chinese restaurant or a Chinese Muslim restaurant to eat non spicy Malaysian food.

  • @valerietan2850

@@magicbobNJ Oh yes, Malaysian Chinese food is quite different from Chinese food in other countries. We have a dish called curry mee which originates from Malaysia. When the word curry is mentioned, u assume it's an Indian dish, but no, it's a Chinese dish only found in Malaysia. It is a little spicy though so perhaps u shd try something else like Bak Kut Teh, Yong Tau Foo, Hokkien Mee, wantan mee, yin yong, popiah, fried rice with seafood, fried rice with barbecued pork n prawns, all kinds of noodle soups, etc. etc. All that I hv mentioned above are non spicy. Oh yes I forgot, u shd definitely get our mixed rice (chap fun in Chinese). That's rice with side dishes. The amount of side dishes is tremendous, anything from 20 - 40 side dishes consisting of meat, fish n vegetable dishes. The Chinese mixed rice is not spicy unlike the Malay n Indian mixed rice (nasi campur) which can be very spicy. However, since there r a variety of side dishes, u just choose the non spicy ones. Anyway, when u are in Malaysia, just get someone to steer u towards Chinese food n you will definitely be spoilt for choice especially non spicy food.

I am Malaysian with a Canadian spouse. I do agree that he won't believe when any Malays say "less spicy" or "not spicy". I think more of the accurate meaning to those are that less spicy means very spicy for him and not spicy means less spicy. Often times, restaurants also failed to follow instructions when requested for the food to be prepared less spicy which forced him to eventually get used to eating spicy food, although he'd still suffer afterwards. People making comments like "you're living here, you gotta learn to eat spicy" doesn't really help either. He does love some spicy food now, it comes to having to decide if we're going out next day or not because he knows he'd get sicked next day. Haha!

Maybe you can add something about the weather next time. Other than hot and humidity, let audience know about how heavy rain in short periods we have, my caucasian wife love to watch how heavy the rain with water look like a threads of h2o but it ended in just about one hour lol. She hates about thunderclap too. Ahaha

Here's a tip for handling the weather. Always make sure you have an umbrella in your bag. The foldable umbrella. You can use it when it's hot or rain. You're welcome. 😅

yes :) come to Malaysia , we welcome you, we give you free culture shocks too its nice to see people shocked by our everyday 1. dad always say :" if you can't eat spicy food your not Malaysian" 2. bad side for us is that things are expensive in other country (it could hurt to spend when you could've buy more at home) 3. never realize that was weird 4. glad u enjoyed ✨✨✨ 5. YESS can't come here without some shopping and eating 6. unfortunately there are racist (whelp lets not talk abt this) 7. i actually hope it was cold but the thoughts of having seasons is weird (even tho i could use a few more holidays?) XD

Not spicy food (not desserts/kuih) for me: 1. Laksam (not laksa, LAKSAM) 2. Tosai 3. Bihun sup (ask for no sambal, but usually the sambal is put separately) 4. Mee sup. (Not Mee Kuah). 5. Nasi Goreng Cina 6. Char Kuew Teow (this should not be spicy at all) 7. Nasi Kerabu (sambal usually comes separately too, or ask for NO SAMBAL at all) 8. Roti tisu, murtabak, roti bom. 9. Roti Nan + ayam tandoori. 10. Nasi air.

@@AlanaDunsmore there's a lot more 😊 these dishes is not spicy (pedas) at all, but they will prepare some sambal on top of it. So, you just need to tell the sellers/waiters, "NO SAMBAL, NO CHILLIES.."
