Malaysia: 24 Hour (Plus) Ration Pack ~2016 Menu B~ Part 1

Ойын-сауық

Huge shoutout to Khor for providing this!!!!
This review is a Malaysian 24 Hour Ration Pack. The Royal Malaysian Army (Tentera Diraja Malaysia - TDM) issues a substantial ration pack to its soldiers. Each pack consists of a large plastic bag with several silver or green plastic-foil retort pouches inside. Most items in the ration are locally procured and are designed to cater to local tastes. Comes in 4 menus (A - D) and conforms to Muslim Halal dietary guidelines. Each ration contains 10 (yes, TEN) 140 g main meal pouches: 2 pouches of vegetables, 2 pouches of meat combinations (beef or chicken - no pork), 2 pouches or tins of seafood, 2 pouches of porridge mix (black bean porridge & pre-sweetened flour porridge), and 2 pouches or cans of fruit in syrup (pineapple & papaya). Each ration pack also includes: 2 packs (6/pack, 80 g each) of hard Army crackers, 1 pouch of jam or marmalade (40 g), 2 packets of instant coffee (2 g each), 6 tea bags (or two 12-g envelopes of loose tea), 4 envelopes of milk powder (6 g each), 2 bags sugar (110 g each), 1 bag of salt (32 g), 1 box of moisture-resistant matches (30 sticks), 2 four-ply napkins, and 2 Vitamin B complex tablets and 2 Vitamin C pills. Issued separately with each ration are two plastic pouches of quick-cooking dehydrated rice and a 4-pack of fuel tablets. The entire ration thus weighs over 2 kg (about 4.5 lbs). Current TDM practice reflects this, as each soldier is now given 2 ration packs for every three days. Like, Share & Subscribe Cheers! #mre, #rationpack, #gundog4314

Malaysian Troops always combined their rations with squad mates so that it will last longer... two packs of the main menu with rice when combined could feed 3 mens, when you are in the middle of the jungle... it is hard to resupply... some time the resupply process could jeopardise the mission... usually the MRE were keep as last resort... troops will forage foods from the jungle and they are being trained to survive... - Kedah Malaysia

I'm malaysian, rarely i see youtuber trying malaysian mre, nice video btw 😁. I remember when i went training in the jungle and having this mre but mine was menu F. We were given two packs of mre with 4 packs of rice (i forgot how many grams), for two people to eat. Eating with that biscuits with a touch of pineapple jam was how we ate breakfast. The reason we're having light breakfast is because the time to prepare and eat was so short (like 30min), we just ate that with some tea/coffee. For lunch we use 1 pack of rice for two people to eat but usually we just ate half of the pack because trust me when you're in the jungle you're appetite will drop and eat only when you felt hungry and mostly you will spend more time drinking rather than eating. The way we boiled the rice is by putting in that square mess tin, cover the mess tin with the "packet" plastic. After it has become rice we'll tear the cover plastic and cover it with the mre packet as to reheat the food and voila all ready to eat. The green bean really is a green bean it became black because of lots of other ingredients were put in there, that's why it looks black-ish. Sambal prawn was the best 😋, serunding was supposed to eat dry, but by mixing it with water usually if we want to fill our belly as not to feel too hungry. The fruits with syrup we usually eat whenever we felt hungry, meaning we just want to filled our stomach with something. Sometimes we ate btwn lunch and dinner or btwn breakfast and lunch or when on sentry at night. This mre if you know how to budget your meal it can lasts about a week or so, some of my instructor even says they can even stretch it to two weeks.

For those who are wondering why the heavy stuff..1) Malaysia is a fairly jungle and mountain heavy country, hence needs more calories and 2) That's for 2 - 3 days not exactly 24 hours.

Malaysian army needs that much of sugar for energy. They operate in highly dense jungle forest area with extremely high humidity and heat. 100 meter march with a 20+ kg backpack will drain your energy quite easy. The salt is more to use against leeches. And they are plenty of it. Put some salt on a leech and they just fall off.

Wow I never expecting that you’re doing review for Malaysian Army’s food ration 😆 My father is an army officer and when I was young, he always had to go on a mission in the jungle (mostly at Sabah & Sarawak) for 2 to 3 months. And everytime he came back, he brought these ration for us. I remembered eating them because my father said this is what a soldier eats whenever they’re in the jungle or some sort of emergency. Well, fellow Malaysian these foods are really good, especially the papayas, pulut hitam(black glutinous rice), serunding and mutton curry. Since I’m a kid with sweet tooth, I’m really hooked with these kind of food. So whenever he came back I always asked for these rations. Oh yeah the sambal and green bean tasted the same as usual. Anyway, thank you for doing this review, it’s really brings back my childhood memories 😁👍🏻

Howdy Paul, Tea and the way it's prepared is something you are raised with. Personally, I never had hot tea except for a nice Chinese restaurant since I started doing reviews. With me I was raised with iced tea and culturally as far as we were concerned the rest of you hot tea drinkers were flat out mad LOL! All that being said, I do have a proper electric kettle and do enjoy a nice cuppa now and then. I'll try to brew a proper cup in one of these reviews someday! Cheers

What your reviewing is probably rations for the infantry units during jungle operation, which could take weeks or maybe couple of months. There are smaller packets of pack rations too. There are also pack rations in emergency boats in Malaysian Navy vessels. Also ration packs for the air force personnels. Then there are those for special forces. Thats is why there are Menu Ration A, B n C. Most are similar but dietary needs varied according to the given task, location n periods of engagement.

The only reason I would try to explain that amount of sugar in a ration is so that it might be used in lieu of saline in battlefield situations where you needed to stabilize a wounded individual. Could sprinkle the dried meat on the rice.,,, Extra rice us used to soak up the papaya juice.

Great video GunDog, super impressive MRE. i dont eat very large meals nor ever served in a military, so i would have the fruit with tea n biscuts for breakfast(with a spare breakfast left over). Also add that shredded jerky to ur mixed vedg n sauce for lunch. Pick the best 2 for evening mains with 2x the rice (i eat carbs b4 bed to keep weight up) and feed the rest to ur units biggest dude (make sure that guy looks out for me). Keep the sardines in sauce to feed to stray animals in camp reducing rodent problems and making friends. Give a full pouch of suger to some wasps/ ants/ beetles when u leave the area to help clean up the "shit" left behind.

The Malaysian army is more of a jungle army since we're covered in them. So the sugar and salt is supposed to be stretched for other food sources that those guys might have to survive on. If you thought eating deer was wild, try a bite of python/turtle/monkeys/etc. Even wild game needs seasoning.

Hey Gundog, Emmy sent me! I love watching food review channels. I have 2 bowels conditions so I have a limited diet. Most food review channels are like food porn for me but yours is a bit different. I'm friends with a lot of veterans through the service dog community so this gives me another little insight into their time of service. I noticed that some countries give you a lot more beverages than others? Does everyone else just have water and coffee/tea?

BTW, that beef jerky is actually beef floss with spices. It's called Serunding Daging (Daging being beef). One would usually eat it with rice or use as a filling in a "Serunding sandwich". I personally, prefer to eat it as is as a snack. It's funny however seeing someone trying to re-hydrate it. No offense though.

I try to find out the way the troops eat it, sometimes I get lucky and talk to a soldier and get so good tips. Others, say experience it and draw your own conclusions, so it really is hit or miss. Even if I do get good info on preparation I still get "that's not how you do it" comments which just goes to show everyone does stuff different anyways. As I tell many peeps over all these reviews is it all ends up in the stomach anyways why not mix stuff in advance? LOL! Cheers

We do use a lot of salt and sugar in Malaysia, which explains why we have some of the most obese people in the region. That said, there has been a push lately, especially in the cities, to consume less sugar. The more "savvy" food places tend to cut down on the salt and sugar which can make the food taste bland (although since moving to the UK, I have been introduced to a whole new level of blandness). Still though, the traditional food places in Malaysia go overboard with it and I often had to stress the phrase "no sugar" when ordering drinks.

Just kita bukan takde teknologi, kepakaran, modal untuk improve semua ni. Jadi apa salah nya kan.

actualy what you called dehydrated beef is a beef flosh aor we called here in indonesia as "abon sapi". it's a deep fried beef with spices. and you just eat it as it is without rehydrated it. we usually eat it with rice. and i think the grey think in top right of your tray is mung bean pouridge. a traditional dessert in south east asia region. it give you lot of energies since it have a high fiber and calories.
