Is the immersion oil used without a slip cover? I doubt it, but a slip cover wasn't mentioned, and I'm a noob.

Cover slip is not used for microscopy of Blood smears...Cover slip is used for Urine,stool and other fluid microscopy

Yes. Thick and thin smear in one slide is more practical and is commonly done in public hospitals in some countries.
