when i am personally doing these tasks , i sometimes get annoyed because even wiping of the slide for blood spreading does not go as i want. But this is more simpler than my way. thank you.

These have to be the best smears I've ever seen. Do you have any recommendation on how to get better drops if you don't have access to the cap seen in this video? For example, if you only have microhematocrit tubes, pipettes &/or 1cc syringes? My blood drops are always too large no matter what I try.

Hi, I'm taking a vet assisting course in my high school. I want to practice doing blood smears but I obviously don't have access to blood at home. Is there any other way you can practice doing them?

Knowing very little about this procedure/process, my question is whether or not this is demonstrative, or whether in an actual situation this is done under sterile lab conditions (flow hood or still air chamber)? I ask from the point of view of mycology considering that airborne particles could land and stick to the slide/specimen, contaminating it.

+FearOfaBlackChannel as a current student,my best answer would be that it doesnt matter what sticks to the slide because under a microscope(which is usualy where this goes after staining) artifacts are easy to spot. This procedure is perfectly fine to do with little more than gloves.

Yeah, in the case that we even do these by hand anymore (in most hospital labs as I understand the process is automated) the only thing we really use a peripheral blood smear slide for is Complete Blood Counts w/ Differentials, which is a manual counting process done at the microscope. In the case of this, artifacts and contamination can happen and can be a bit of an annoyance, but generally it's not significant enough to matter provided that your slide is clean and you stain it promptly. In the case of slides and stains done in the microbiology department of the lab (vs hematology), we perform those under sterile conditions and with sterile technique. One thing this tech does that I don't personally recommend, but isn't necessarily a hard-and-fast rule is that he doesn't wear a face shield while handling blood slides. It's less of an issue because he's using a diff-safe to dispense it, as opposed to wooden applicator sticks and an open tube.
