Excerpted from Pink Martini's concert DVD release "Discover the World," this performance was filmed live in concert at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland Oregon on December 31, 2005. "Malagueña," by the great Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona, has long been a concert staple for Pink Martini. This version was arranged by bandleader Thomas Lauderdale, and features Thomas on the piano, along with Robert Taylor on the trombone. The song often opens Pink Martini concerts on tour, and has never been recorded in the studio by the band, though another composition by Lecuona, "Andalucia", was featured on Pink Martini's debut album "Sympathique."

This is the kind of music that will be enjoyed for generations to come unlike most of the music we hear today-maybe things will change 🙏
As a huge fan of Malagueña over many decades, I have to say this is one the best renditions ever.
I think the performance of Thomas Lauderdale on this piece is one of the most underappreciated things in the world

To play a masterful piece of this kind, this well, you have to be a master at your musical trade. The members of the Pink Martini band are simply that. Bravo!!
Thomas Lauderdale is talented and amazing on just so many levels. Up until just a few weeks ago I had never heard of Pink Martini. He, his band and his many guest vocalists should be household names. Now that I have "found" this wonderful group of musicians, they are "mine" for life. Thomas Lauderdale is genius--pure solid gold!!!

Thanks for this wonderful piece of art. Just one remark. Ernesto Lecuona was Born in Cuba in 1895, when Cuba was part of Spain. He died in Tenerife, Spain in the sixties. His nationality was Spanish.

First time I heard this piece was 1972 on album 'everything you wanted to hear on the moog', fast forward to now, this performance is absolutely amazing! Bravo to all the musicians

I myself am from Portland and have enjoyed Pink Martini ever since I first heard one of their CDs. When I heard of Lawrence having the concert I wanted to go to it but as always it was on a day I couldn’t go. One of these days I will go and enjoy them… I hope.

Long time Pink Martini fan here. I had the pleasure of attending their concert in Clearwater, Florida a few years back. And I can tell you this -- to my untrained ears, and with my eyes closed, I would be hard pressed to tell one performing pianist from the next. But, with Thomas Lauderdale, his playful attitude behind the keys and his obvious joy of playing and performing is that "x-factor" that makes his performances so endlessly watchable. The way he emotes while playing is unlike any other I've seen.
